I love the idea of assembly for loops and branching; conditional jumps are wonderful things, and are generally not implemented in any higher languages these days, because of the universal conspiracy against GOTO, or open ended/non-returning jumps.
I once made a program for the ZX Spectrum that, because of the low available memory (48 K) had to use some tricks, including altering its code to execute or jump over some pieces of code according to some conditions.

It's amazing what we can do with just a few commands and some imagination. :)

@Shasta, I am really sorry to hear that your work are being difficult with you - esp after your broken hip, that is worse than poor on them, I sincerely hope that everything works out for the best for you Shasta, take care, keep your chin up if you can.

@The Seeker - LOL I bet.

@Petrus / ArMaP, I did some assembly language back in the 1980's, nested loops rings a bell, I was totally NO GOOD at it, couldn't get my byte-brain around the thought process of how to program, much happier with the hardware side of computing / networking -

Neither can most people.  It's hard.

I've mostly tried to abandon the idea of loops in the usual sense, mostly; it's more just a case of assigning a single command with a single input.

: STAR 42 EMIT ;
: 1STAR 1 = IF STAR THEN ;

The above code prints a single asterisk, if the number 1 is present on the stack.

1 1STAR

This code first puts 1 on the stack, and then because 1 is present, prints an asterisk.

2 1STAR

This code first puts a 2 on the stack, but does nothing, because the IF statement requires a 1.

From here, it is possible to understand that all a loop actually does, is increment a number by 1, and assign a command to every number within the loop.  So if I have a loop which runs from 1 to 20, then it will be clearer and more easily comprehensible code, if I actually write out all the numbers from 1 to 20, and then assign whichever command I want to run with each of them.

: STAR 42 EMIT ;
: 1STAR 1 = IF STAR THEN ;
: 2STAR 2 = IF STAR THEN ;
: 3STAR 3 = IF STAR THEN ;
: 4STAR 4 = IF STAR THEN ;
: 5STAR 5 = IF STAR THEN ;
: 6STAR 6 = IF STAR THEN ;
: 7STAR 7 = IF STAR THEN ;
: 8STAR 8 = IF STAR THEN ;
: 9STAR 9 = IF STAR THEN ;
: 10STAR 10 = IF STAR THEN ;
: 11STAR 11 = IF STAR THEN ;
: 12STAR 12 = IF STAR THEN ;
: 13STAR 13 = IF STAR THEN ;
: 14STAR 14 = IF STAR THEN ;
: 15STAR 15 = IF STAR THEN ;
: 16STAR 16 = IF STAR THEN ;
: 17STAR 17 = IF STAR THEN ;
: 18STAR 18 = IF STAR THEN ;
: 19STAR 19 = IF STAR THEN ;
: 20STAR 20 = IF STAR THEN ;

This, however, is considered bad practice by modern programmers.  They are taught that you should simply use a compacted for statement to do most of that work, but while it is convenient, it is harder for a human programmer to understand what is actually being done; while I am sure you can understand the above.

FORTH's loop statement is easy for me to understand, but I would only use it if I wanted exactly the same command to be repeated multiple times.  I generally don't want that though, so I prefer to explicitly state my branches for each number.

@Fans, thank you for the pep talk.  The company denied my medical leave and terminated me because they conveniently " never got the medical documentation."  That's a load of horse pucky, because I  know it was faxed within the specified time.  But if they want to keep training new nurses for a brutal schedule, it's none of my business.

Shasta, well they really do suck big time, I don't know if it is an option but I saw a article today that the UK NHS is 100,000 posts empty ..  https://www.independent.co.uk/news/health/nhs-nurse-doctor-staff-shortages-vacancies-waiting-times-crisis-brexit-deficit-a8532701.html

I know they are trying to recruit from overseas..

Wishing you all the best Shasta'

Hmmm, were you not working at the jail? Oh wait, you are in the legal stoner state of Colorado, how convenient for them that they never received your documentation;

sounds like total bull shit to me  8)

hopefully you told them it was  :P

A few years ago, when the unemployment situation was worse in Portugal I made several translations of official documents for nurses that were going to the UK. That was before the Brexit, I suppose now they have lost some of the nurses that were from EU countries.

Corporate headquarters is in Tennessee.  I have received three different responses to my inquiries.  HR says all NON-FMLA leaves are at company discretion, and I won't get anything in writing about a 30 day limit.  Leave administratin says they never got the documentation that was faxed.  Former supervisor says she thought HR was handling everything and my position was terminated when I wasn't released back to work at the end of 30 days, because it was a personal leave.  A lot of buck passing, and nobody really knows what's  going on.

wow
i hope you kept copies of what you sent to all those paper pushers...

i learnt that lesson the hard way years ago..keep a file  and a log with dates and times..it sucks

when you first said about  your injury i felt that there would be a good side and it was saving you from something
i hope that is still true
...i guess now you have to take a breath and think about what you would really like to do.
while, of course you fight the paper pushers

sending good vibes for your best

@ArMaP, the nurses and doctors are leaving in their droves, the NHS is being systematically run into the ground so that the fat cats - Richard Branson, and some of the very big US Medical companies can swoop in and guess what?..  yup help smooth the way to a private health service - its been a very long term goal of every Tory Govt to do..  the NHS is at breaking point and wont be surprised if by the end of 2020 we wont have a NHS -

>:( :(

I have copies of everything.  I have a call log of when Dan, at the surgeon's office called and told meceverythingchad been faxed.  I will be filing for unemployment,  and if they try to fight it, I have lots of ammunition.

I just slept for probably 16 hours.  I woke up intermittently, but something kept dragging me back to sleep.  I also was having incredibly vivid dreams, to the point where even though extremely unrealistic things were happening in them, I still thought I wasn't dreaming.

I have days like that.  I notice it more when I'm over tired or really stressed.  Sometimes they're kind of fun.  Other times, they're more like WTF?

Since my surgery I can't sleep on my right side without waking up with major issues with the shoulder; a lot of nights I will be so sleepy I can't keep my eyes open and will sleep for about 10 minutes then wake up; be awake for an hour then repeat, 10 minutes then wake up; yet during the day I can sit still for 2 minutes and fall asleep( if I am sitting up) then wake up with my legs killing me

getting old sucks

When I went on my medication which is 2 baby aspirins, Metropolo, Benazapreil, Effent and Atoravastin, my dreams have been numerous and very vivid! I used to never dream but now it won't stop. It's to the point where sometimes they are so real, it takes awhile for me to figure out if it really did happen or if it was just the dream.

And yes, when I had my surgery in 2006, I kept everything I received as far as paperwork. The documentation is endless and having to talk to someone on the phone and have to start at the beginning each time you get a different person, is madding.
