space otter, you may have a valid point.  Occam's razor?

Occam's razor? the ultimate shot to make things easy. Is it aliens? is it propaganda? is it SF? is it something they saw and its supposed no one to see? is it antrax? is it hillary? is it trump? idk.

what i do know is that something is wrong there...

i'm a firm believer of looking at the plausible before heading to conspiracy theories
humans usually did it...lol  ;)

kind of a small paraphrasing of  Conan Doyles line

edit to add that it was AURA that  called the shots..they would be the employer

A statement on the observatory's website currently states:

QuoteOn Thursday September 6th, AURA made the decision to temporarily close Sunspot. The Sunspot Solar Observatory continues to work closely with AURA in order to allow for us to reopen as soon as possible. With the excitement this closure has generated, we hope you will come and visit us when we do reopen, and see for yourself the services we provide for science and public outreach in heliophysics. If you have any questions about the science we perform at the telescope, or about the outreach we provide through our Visitors Center, please contact our Director, Dr McAteer (mcateer@nmsu.edu).

Sunspot Solar Observatory Director R.T. James McAteer also said:

Last Thursday, we got a phone call in the morning from AURA who told us to say that they were temporarily evacuating the site and asked us to evacuate our people. So, I called our people up and asked them to leave in a very sensible and calm manner and locked everything up. We've been out of there since Thursday morning.

Hmmm, not buying that story yet. Evacuation is a word that implies an unexpected forced action. Not SOP. FBI??
Naw, something more.

No news of arrests?..  local Police not informed, or can not give out information? FBI havent released a statement ?? The Post Office was also closed?

Evacuated.

Could they do anything more to make this story very suspcious ?  ???

It al seems very ??.. hmm odd.  ::)

Maybe they did and either didn't like the answers or were forced not to talk about it.  :)

UPDATE!!!!

http://earthsky.org/human-world/why-sunspot-solar-observatory-nm-closed-fbi

Sunspot Solar Observatory will re-open this week
By Paul Scott Anderson in HUMAN WORLD | SPACE

AURA said the decision was made to shut down the Sunspot Solar Observatory in New Mexico because of "criminal activity" and concern about a possible threat to the safety of local staff and residents.

Seems it was a case of child pornography.

It's possible, but I think it doesn't "connect" (sorry, I cannot think of the right word at the moment) well with the previous version of "a suspect in the investigation potentially posing a threat to the safety of local staff and residents"

That was a cover story as to not alert the subject of the investigation. They didn't want to scare the guy off until they had all the proof they needed to make an arrest. They raided a janitor's home and confiscated several laptops and phones that he was using at the Solar Institutes Wi-Fi.

Sarge, you are correct.  Having been in law enforcement and retired, a cover story helps so as not to alert a suspect.  Standard practice.

smells a bit fishy to me

you don't need a  blackhawk helicopter to flush out a janitor stealing
wi-fi for porn..that's just a bit over the top and i'ld like to see how the guy calling the shots answered for that requisition

more to the story i'm sure

Sgt.Rocknroll

Well that's the story the FBI is putting out there. Is there more? Maybe, maybe not. Wait and see
