A NASA cover up..  ArMaP says

QuoteI don't think so.

Then ArMaP says:

"...so someone thought it was a good idea to clone some ground from another place to cover it up..."

::)

PLAYSWITHMACHINES

2 identical rock formations next to each other?
Definitely photoshopped, even a half blind person can see that, i AM half blind, but it stands out like Elvis at a Mormon church service....

ArMaP,

If NASA were an ATS member you would have to move that photoshopped pic to hoax and ban them?

I find it bizarre the double standards in operation here.  Do you understand me?

In Portuguese is easier to explain, as I would have used two different words instead of the same (cover), as we don't use "cover" (tapar in Portuguese) in the same way it's used in "cover up" (ocultação, encobrimento).

For something like that? I wouldn't think of that as a hoax unless the image was made to present that specific area as real.

I don't see it as double standards, as I never consider images made for a publicity or entertainment purpose in the same way I do with images for scientific research.

The image was supposed to represent a real place.  An image of something that isn't there was displayed.  That is a hoax.

Is the new position:  Hoaxing is only OK if you cost tax payers billions of dollars? If you are regular person it is completely unacceptable? :o

Double standards. :)

The part that isn't there is a very small percentage of the whole image.
My understanding of the reason for the existence of that image is not that it was intended to be used as a way of looking at Gale crater as if we were there, only to give an approximate idea of how things are there.

Based on the two things above I don't see this as a hoax, just as a badly done publicity job.

Did I say that?

Well; here in the US when you put a taro over something to occult it you are covering it up :P hope that helps  :o

Hoax is a funny term... ATS uses it when its convenient. But since 90% of stuff on forums and youtube is false info, that means hoaxes are the norm and reality is in the minority...

So... when is a hoax not a hoax but disinfo ?

It depends how you define hoax I guess.  It isn't disinformation though.

No you didn't say that directly.... I'm suggesting that your usual sense of fairness is not being applied here.

surely disinfo is always a hoax, unless it is propagated unknowingly...  ???

That's why I said that they used the same area to "cover up" the area that had no higher definition image. :)

To me, a hoax is something that was done with the intent of deceiving in some way, and I don't see that here.

If I didn't say it then please do not act as if I had, when I do want to say something I say it (even today I told my boss that he was lying, some minutes later, after seeing that I was wrong I apologised), I don't do that "hidden meaning" stuff, only when joking, which was not the case.

It's possible that I am not seeing it in the right way, but I think it's also possible that you are seeing this from a biased point of view.

Quotesurely disinfo is always a hoax, unless it is propagated unknowingly...  ???
Well, it depends on the definition of disinfo. Once more, if i's propagated unknowingly I don't see it as a hoax by that person.

It is possible that you are biased too.  :o

I am biased in one sense.  I do think that NASA waste a lot of money (my opinion) in the name of public education and science but then spend money on crap like Photoshopping bits of a 3D model of Mars surface to look like a science project when it is PR.  Waste of money.

There are plenty of scientific projects that money could go on.

I also think that there is a lot of activity in space that NASA obscures (I mean draws attention away from).  Lots of it probably military.  If only we could spend it on science!

And then there are the rumours that lots of the Apollo footage was hoaxed.... but that is not for this thread. :)

SO if I know, does that mean I need to or is someone at NASA not doing their job properly?
