There's a Hole in the Sun, NASA Says

Quote By Ian O'Neill Published June 04, 2013 Discovery News

During the latter part of last week, a huge void rotated across the face of the sun.

But never fear, it isn't a sign of the "end times" or some weird sci-fi stellar malnourishment: This particular hole is a coronal hole.

Though it may be a well-known phenomenon, it is noteworthy — it's the largest coronal hole to be observed in the sun's atmosphere for over a year.

Snapped through three of NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory's (SDO) extreme ultraviolet filters, this coronal hole is caused by a low density region of hot plasma.

QuoteThe sun's lower corona is threaded with powerful magnetic fields. Some are looped — or "closed" — very low in the corona, creating the beautiful, bright coronal loops that trap superheated gases that generate vast amounts of extreme ultraviolet light, radiation that is produced by multimillion degree plasma (the bright regions in the image, top).

However, there are also "open" field lines that have one end of their magnetic flux anchored in the solar photosphere.

These lines fire solar plasma into interplanetary space at an accelerated rate, often intensifying space weather conditions.

These regions of open field lines, or coronal holes, act like fire hoses, blasting plasma into space.

These regions are the source of the the fast solar wind that accelerates solar material toward Earth, which often only takes 2-3 days to travel from the sun to Earth.

QuoteThrough the SDO's eyes, coronal holes appear dark as there is a very low density of the multimillion degree plasma generating the EUV radiation. And as this dramatic observation demonstrates, to the eyes of the SDO, the sun really does appear to have a hole.

We are currently going through an uptick in solar activity as our nearest star experiences "solar maximum" — the peak of its natural 11-year cycle.

At this time, we can expect an increased frequency of solar flares and coronal mass ejections as the sun's magnetic field becomes increasingly stressed.
Although this solar maximum is less active than predicted, it is producing some powerful flares and CME's.

Now we're seeing huge coronal holes, all a consequence of the twisted turmoil our sun is currently enduring.

Worrying Hole In The Sun Is The Biggest Spotted By Nasa In Over A Year

robomont

i had seen the pic by a doomsayer .thought it was bs.
thankyou for the description and pics.really pretty.
now i know the facts.
you must have some good coffee because you sure are  bringing some cool stuff .
ive never been much for rules.
being me has its priviledges.

Nice photos, It looks like some marbles I have.
Wonder what would happen if this happened all over the sun. Would we have black light?  8)

my thoughts as i read and looked at the pics

as above so below

and

do all the other planets have coronal holes

if all the planets have these holes NOW  i think that says something
about how we are all connected  and i wonder if it is because we are all spiraling faster

what  would make a whole galaxcy spin faster...ekkk are we going down the drain..

bwhahahahaha..wierd sense of humor today

I can take the humor to the gutter dear Sky dear Sky....

NASA may actually think they can fix the problem, so maybe not as funny as I think, or anyone should think  ;)  :o

To me, these words are presented in such a way as would a robot or computer would say it. "Just the facts mam".

If a coronal hole represents the end of the "rifle barrel" for "solar mass shots", one would think we might need to be on alert when it is aimed toward Earth? More especially in this present time of anticipated higher coronal activity!

But nope, we go on with our "eating, drinking, and being merry, and are not told to think about being ready for the "power grid" not being there for us, when we wake up. Yes, there has been mention of potential power grid damage in the news occasionally, but not really in any sort of serious cautionary way!! I guess we will just take whatever comes, when it comes!!  :o

Interesting observ's Rdunk :)

I am not sure how to put this apart from the fact that I like the Fact/or to some Woo Woo, that we may just see these sorta things as an entity on Earth without the tools to recognize as much through our art and literature ;)

Black Hole Sun- Soundgarden

Why in the heck would anyone be thinking to write a song Called Black Holed Sun  ???

EDIT TO ADD "In the 90's :O "

NASA and the rest of the Scientific community are scratching the family jewels over this one.
How does a 'centric' nuclear reaction expanding hot gases outwards have a hole in it's corona??????
Maybe because the Sun isn't a nuclear reactor like you think it is, dippoops.
It is an electrical arc, utilising the energy influx from Galactic and extra-Galactic sources.
Instead of researching and experimenting via the 'Scientific Principles', you have instead created a fantasy world of pseudo-science (detached from reality) and a funding cash-cow for your haughty dreams of dominance.
As we all know, those detached from reality soon get a big wake up call, something always comes along and bites them on the butt!
What would a sane person, an educated person do, when faced with amazing new data that brings his theories into doubt??
Oh, yes that's right, create a Media frenzy of frightened worms, scurrying about screaming, "The sky is falling!!!!!".
Well, Chicken Little, the sky is falling but not in the way you expect it to.
Hold on to your gonads, boy!

Sit down before fact like a small child, and be prepared to give up every preconceived notion, follow humbly wherever and to whatever abyss nature lead, or you will learn nothing. —T. H. Huxley

Well if there really IS a ginormous black hole at the center of our Galaxy...

...then YES we are going down the drain

::)
