Kendra Villanueva was two weeks from her due date on July 4 when she was struck by a bolt of lightning while watching fireworks in her front yard. The baby's, father Ian Gordon, was also struck. After the couple were rushed to the hospital, Villanueva had an emergency C-section, and delivered the newborn who had just been struck by lightning while still inside her. Little Kimberley already has a cool nickname: "Last name's Gordon, so little Flash Gordon," her dad, Gordon, said. Gordon had an eardrum blown out, but was otherwise unscathed. "We're hoping for, you know — run fast or save the universe." With a start in the world this epic, we wouldn't be surprised. [Source]

Baby, parents survive ABQ lightning strike

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - They say lightning doesn't strike twice, but one local family was struck three times July 4.

An Albuquerque couple was watching fireworks with friends when lightning struck in the front yard of a home off I-40 and Eubank.

"We were actually going inside because we heard the lightning and the thunder," said Ian Gordon." The next thing we know, we woke up on the ground and everybody was just trying to keep us calm."



The woman, Kendra Villanueva, was just two weeks from her due date.



Firefighters were nearby at another call, and were able to arrive at the scene within minutes.



"They were both awake and looking at us. They were dazed and confused," said Lt. Ryan Perry with Albuquerque Fire Department. "But we knew that there were underlying injuries that we possibly couldn't see that we needed to treat quickly and get them to the hospital."

They were rushed to UNMH where she had an emergency c-section.

Their newborn, Kimberly Samantha Rose Gordon, is expected to be okay, though she's still being monitored in the hospital.

Mom and dad have some big hopes for their little one who survived the lightning strike and some ideas for nicknames.



"Last name's Gordon, so little Flash Gordon," Ian Gordon said. "We're hoping for, you know - run fast, or save the universe."

A UNMH EMS doctor who treated the couple at the scene said there have only been 11 recorded incidents of a pregnant woman being struck by lightning, anywhere and only about half of those babies survived.

Ian's eardrum was blown out because of the current and both parents face long-term muscle spasms.

But the three of them are alive and they are thankful.

"Somebody's definitely watching out for us," Ian said.



The Albuquerque Fire Department honored the 15 first responders who were at the scene for their efforts and for three lives saved.
