The motive for planned obsolescence is capitalism.  :P

No...  It's PROFIT.

Last time I checked Capitalism is about Profit :P And planned obsolescence is necessary :D  I have a mirowave oven made by Citizen...  its like the Energizer Bunny  still going  I bought it when I was 20... over 40 years ago...

But that company couldn't survive... no Profit in making stuff that lasts forever.  So all those people out of work :P

I also have two 100 watt light bulbs  Had those over 40 years too... and they were original in the aaprtment building they tore down. I had six but 4 have gotten broken over the years... Not burn out just broken.  One I have hanging outside in the weather... still going :D

Well if ya have nothing then you also have nothing to lose :P I don't see it making much of a difference :P

But you could sit in that cozy cottage and make quilts... Do you have any idea how much a hand stitched quilt sells for these days?

Pioneer women used to sit by candle light in small cabins and do just that... :P

Von Mises wrote that the process is supposed to reward companies/individuals for the creation of new markets.

In other words, no; forced obsolescence is not necessary.  It is lazy; and it is a perversion even of Capitalism itself as a system.  It is a means of creating artificial scarcity; which again, is easier than creating genuinely new markets, which is how the system is really supposed to work.

tis true the majority of the people are sheeple, but without prodding them along I doubt if any will become aware; a small percentage is, and more are starting to look about a bit...

That is why we need NEW SHEPHERDS  not to prod the sheep and wake them then let them wander aimlessly (like Anon and Occupy :P )  But true Shepherds with the good of the people in mind that can LEAD the sheep to a new purpose.... THAT is the only way things will change... the same way a mere handful of men led a mere 20% of "We the people..." to take over from Britain

Quoteto a degree; info about true happenings is important, is no denying it, yet the falsehoods might motivate those that would otherwise not be inclined to do ought...

If 10% of the info is true and 90% is false... and the false info is what is spread to the Sheep because it feeds what they WANT TO BELIEVE... then what purpose is served?

If you then try to tell people what is trrue and you get shouted down as a shill... while they tweet and share the false story... then what purpose is served?

And WHO creates the false stories? Is it hoaxers out for sh!ts and giggle ) or lulz like Anon hackers :P ) Or is it agents that are deliberatelt fear mongering?  Which is it  do you (generic you) know? Because I don't  Who does Sorcha Fall work for?  BeforeItsNews  has 50% good stories and 50% pure BS  WHY? ... what purpose is served?

Quotecan't speak for the others, Z, but I have been making preps since the first whispers about Y2K began... and have never stopped... I live in a rural area on top of a small mountain; have a deep rock well with pump; couple of generators; farm tractor and tiller; seed stock; wood heater big enough to do the whole house if needed( and am checking on a window unit pellet stove  ;D) food stock to do for quite some time; a large variety of tools, couple of 4-wheelers if needed, firearms and ammunition for hunting and defense, canning supplies...

Being prepared is AWESOME  I did a thread on that at the beginning but it was lost  I will have to do it again. I have a pantry with a years supply of food... three freezers I picked up for next to nothing used  (but currently don't have a generator)  We created the pantry not so much for a SHTF scenario but to save money. I was getting free stuff from the conventions... and we would shop at closeouts and end of lines and specials... store stuff that has a long shelf life (glass jars, dry goods)

We save a ton of money because you pick up stuff say at Kmart markdown where mt daughter bought 7.99 blocks of foil wrapped Velvita cheese for 50 cents each.. She brought home 14 3 lb blocks

I will redo that thread... because being prepare has many levels and needs a plan C  Look at New Orleans... if that happened here my pantry would be under water :D

Quoteall my children have bug out bags in their cars; my son in law the Gunny and my daughter have sufficent bug out accomadations to carry them from texas to here even if they have to walk...

Cool  did you add toilet paper? :P  And Koolaid packages are great  light weight and will make water taste better ;) especially with kids along

QuoteMore people need to think, Z; at any given moment there is a 3 day supply of food on hand in the country; major calamity happens, power grid goes down, or the trucks can't roll, shelves in the stores will be bare p d q...

Japan was in trouble after the Tsunami hit for several reasons... but here are a few things I noticed that shocked me

1) they had no food because they don't shop like we do and have food in the house

2) their pride made them leave food ROT in the stores while people were starving

3) They had no gasoline for the cars that were still operational  BUT all around them there were cars wrecked with full gas tanks

4) They were cold and wet.... yet it was TWO WEEKS before I saw the first makeshift lean too and someone making a fire... yet there was wood debris all around

5) They had no drinking water... yet it was snowing (before Fukushima radiation was an issue) yet no one took a pot of water and melted and boiled the snow

Shock to be sure... but more so because people have lost the basic skills of how to survive.

Here in the US there are survivalists, boy scouts and medieval groups that would take charge and get things going fast... but then again  look at how New Orleans handled the crisis...  Bush was congratulating FEMA teams that hadn't even deployed yet  :P

RULE NUMBER 1  in an emergency  Fend for yourself and family FIRST  Then once you are secured THEN you can see about helping others...

And where do you create NEW markets when countries like China are creating their own markets AND taking ours? :P  (which is the main reason we have such high unemployment and as we lose our house China is buying the foreclosures ;) )

Canada taught India how to grow wheat... India paid attention and then took Canada's wheat markets leaving Canadian farmers needing government subsidies while their wheat rotted in the silos and train cars

One of the reasons I stay where I am is because I am 300 miles from the ocean and 1100' above sea level; my sources told me long ago that my area is considered a safe zone if some of the theorized earth changes ala the new Madrid popping ...

I also agree good Shepherds are needed; if they don't get killed for their efforts...

just stay least in sight till you are needed...you'll know when

my quest started after reading the cayce stuff way back in the 70's..
safe area.. yep same as seeker's info
built a library of how to books for every concievable thing..
cause there was only so much i could do myself
no plans on leaving so made  it very defensible
hubby hunts and butchers..venison is goot eats
got a green house, garden. can and do save seeds
generator that runs on natural gas
got a source of natural gas, grew a huge garden
taught myself food prep skills
did primative camping for years with the horses...good tool for learning
medical basics  are improtant and can be handled with minimal supplies
can clean dirty water...distilling is not that hard
but right now water is my only worry
don't know how to test for radiation in it and working on learning
originally figured i could keep 17 or more alive for a year
but
getting older and having to re-thinking some things
but still ready
;D

1.  I have My life to lose.

2.  I have zero patience for needlework, and I doubt I can make quilts with nothing, and if TSHTF, who is going to buy quilts?

3.  Good for those pioneer women.

try to find a copy of nuclear war survival skills by kresson h Kearny; it has a lot of useful info and also details how to build a simple rad meter out of common things that works  8)

as I am getting older I have also tried to instill the needed skills in my kids and hopefully in my grandkids...

the pity is the majority of the general population does not have any survival skills; at all... unless it involves clubbing and/or shooting their neighbor for their supplies...

The point is to come up with new commodities entirely.  Internet bandwidth, graphene, plant-based plastics, perhaps.  Real innovation is not encouraged; and in the meantime, we get Google moving the interface elements of YouTube around, every three months or so, purely so that they can claim that they are "innovating."

yeah had a conversation with a few neighbors on the night out this last week...i thought it was a good opportunity to start some conversations about being ready.. if only in light of the weather disasters that are in the news..
i was amazed..truly amazed as what some of them thought was prepared for just a 48 hour lights out storm..
and they all walked away thinking i was nuttier that they had thought before....
sigh
