I have been east to west down the Colombia Gorge twice - once with My family when I was 7-8ish, and once on Our motorcycles with My first husband.

The second trip was impelled by My memories of the first.  It was better the first time because the freeway was not in then and We had the whole of the old highway to ride. (I was on a Honda 400Four - nasty bike, center of gravity somewhere overhead.)

I fell in love with the Gorge and it's so nice to see the pics!

My cousin and avid "wind surfer" is always down around Hood River, or so his wife says. 

Trout Lake is a neat little place. Spent a lot of time there before Gilliland was there.  Might be kind of fun to check him out.    Watch the UFO show, maybe. You can take a paved forest service rd to Mt St Helens, which is one of the most beautiful forests I have ever been in.

Yep. I have hiked into Spirit lake a few times and it's gorgeous -

Personally I am just big on anything to do with wind.

Hang gliders and Ultra lights included.


Now in Hawaii, you can go up to the Pali lookout, and useing your body as a kite, hang in the air for hours just floating. 


I love big windy storms at the beach too, I spend hours out in them.

I could meet you 1/2 way at Yellowstone and we could start the trip there.

A friend of mine once noted that the artist for Yes MUST have been to Yellowstone, because all the album covers look like snapshots from there.

I have actually considered being a park ranger there, just so I could live there.


It's one of my favorite places on Earth.

The memories.

I used to run I-84 both ways along the colombia. One time I decided to run 14 over on the washington side east.

I stopped in the dalles for lunch, than went onto troutdale to the flying J and from there into portland to jubitz truck stop.

The scenery is breath taking for the first time traveler.

I have one place to never forget and thats deadmans pass on I-84 west bound 15 miles east of pendlton. It was a rest area and the visitor was many thousands a feet above the floor of east oregon as one looked down and out. Its called cabbage between pendleton and la grande by the truckers.

There I saw dust devils rise from the floor below high into the sunny afternoon sky thousands of feet above where I was gazing upon this wonder of nature.

I love the house boat living people do on the colombia.

That indeed is awe inspiring pictures of the world seldom seen.

Then I'm sure you'll be able to relate Gigas -

One winter ages ago I had to drive a Volkswagon Beetle back from Pendleton to Portland.

For those not familiar with the area, in winter when the Gorge is feeling frisky, the monstrous winds on the freeway can give you a major course change in the blink of an eye.

And that's just for normal cars, this little Beetle just about went airborne a couple of times, and was seriously forcing me off the road several times.

I finally got to a really bad section and had to just pull off and wait.

Finally I saw an 18 wheeler coming down the road, so I timed it just right and jumped out and got right out on his tail close and rode his tail's air draft all the way back to town.

Yeah my first young trip was before the freeway was in too.

But these days you are free to stop and explore any place that catches your eye, unlike when you were young.


It's amazing that so many here on Peggy know of it first hand!

You people realize that these pictures are just small postage stamp views of this huge 360 degree experience that has to be seen in person to be appreciated!
