But snow is dirty... it cleans everything out of the air, more so than rain. Anyone living in a snowy area just need to go watch the piles melt where the city dumps the snow  As it melts it gets blacker and blacker

I had to show my kids this by taking a clean clear glass, went outside and scooped and packed it full of "clean" snow.  Took it inside and left it on the counter with plasti-wrap over it and let it melt.  They were amazed at all the little specks and particles at the bottom of the glass when it had fully melted.  "Clean" "fresh" snow isn't nearly as clean as you think it is.

(Of course it doesn't help I have a wood burning fireplace I have going nearly all winter and we're in the middle of the woods.  But I didn't tell them that.)

used a match to it...smelled like plastic
don't know.
used a 'fire starter'....TURNED HARD...gave off BURNING PLASTIC SMELL.
two fellows from Alabama...both from the country

Micjer gives the possible reason we don't see the snow melting with the blow torch.

It is melting, but the snow is absorbing the water as it does.

If the torch had been kept on it , , it would have been a small puddle. He quit too soon.

As for the "plastic" smell?!?! That is still interesting.

What's happening here is:

A) The snow is melting, but the very loose fluffy structure of the snow wicks away the water, turning dry snow into wet snow, and eventually turning the snow into slush.

B) The snow is blackened when a lighter is held underneath it because of the soot from the lighter (the products of incomplete combustion). It's not burning.

C) The smell is fumes from the lighter

That is odd that it smells like plastic.  Has the snow melted in the backyards, or is it still there?

If you folks that live in this area, feel that there is something to this, then I am not going to argue.

After living in a snowbelt area for over 50 years, I am just adding my two cents.

That snow on the stove not melting is very odd.  My dog just came in from outside with snow stuck to his paws.  It started to melt on the floor within seconds.
