Is there anyone here that has completed an Ultra Marathon ?

I am contemplating signing up for this event which is ran in September this year 2014:

Surf Coast Century

http://www.rapidascent.com.au/SurfcoastCentury/

As most of YA'll all believe in UFO's and Aliens and Crazy things... (As I do) I wonder if someone here has completed such an event and could give a another "crazy in the coconut" some advice in how you trained ?

I've found about the only video where someone talks of their training and mindset for this particular event.  Its great and all but one person's journey may be another's poison LOL

Part One

PART TWO featuring The Great Scenery and Course:

Many Scientist's look at start and finish when ATTEMPTING to find out how our life came to be and make big claim's.  But  oddly when one complete's a marathon you start to realize there is no end or beginning.   Just a Moment!

And if you would like to get philosophical in this thread regarding Future Prep compared to just living out life then please do, as it may lead to an interesting discussion !

Mainly though I would like to hear from people who have trained to these extremes for advice!

Cheers

Soma

hey Soma

you going for it , huh?.....yeahhhhhhhhhhhh live your dream..

question - ultra marathon for me is 100 miles.. is that what you are going for?

no i am not a runner but we trained with some years and years ago when i was doing  endurance races with the horse
staying hydrated is the biggest thing for human and critter...
if you haven't studied electrolites..check it out
pacing was the other biggie...run fast thur the sun and slower in the shade...sounds wierd but think about it..

we would train to  a little over the distance we wanted to race at..then back off for different times
and see what the recovery time to peak was...so we knew how many days before the race to take as a break..we're all different and the timing is personal

knowing where you should be  on a map and where the check points are is very helpful
and if you know your pace you can figure when you should be hitting them

running the race terrain in your head and seeing where the trouble spots might be and solving any problems helps to keep a calm energy as you race..and also helps you to know that any thing you hadn't planned for can be handled... that way you don't waste any energy  -  that you WILL need  -  on worries

the runners i knew all carried whatever first aid they would need in a fanny pak plus extrra dry socks..

i hope this might help a little

and here's a link to hines ward getting ready for the iron man..he's an ex steeler football player
and took almost a year to traain.. this one might help in an overview..they were sponored by choc milk so that's the connection

and some ultra info if you have the time or desire to check them out

the old dominion in virginia is an ultra cross country race so anything from them might be useful

oh almost forgot.. a roll of vet wrap...it's a self adhesive elastic wrap  and can be used for all kinds of things..sprains..holding stuff together ..whatever..just don't wind it too tight as it will constrict

Maybe... What a Challenge Huh?

100 mile or 100km :P

Thanks for replying Sky, as it take's some commitment to commit to something. Opinion is worth sweet FA without experience ;)

I am keen to try this out... after a marathon to see where I am at  :D

I have lot's to learn as I just noticed what are call shin splint's. Oddly they don't effect my runing per se, but yeah i would rather not have them for now!

Luckily I am factoring in a new bike for low impact :D
