Henry Fords had planned mass produced aircraft for all !

It is known that Henry Fords dream had been to mass produce cars for every household...

but did you also know that he was considering to do the same but with aircraft or planes for all !

This was the aircraft that he had developed ..a small one man aircraft. He called the Ford Flivver..that he also planned to mass produce..

I never knew about this , until I saw a TV program about it the other day...

Unfortunately for us all maybe... One of the prototype aircraft led to a fatal craft that made Ford give up on that dream.

I did not see all the TV program, but I think that the prototype was later found to have had a match stick found in part of the engine...that led to its engine failure...

But otherwise it was suggested that the aircraft was a good design.

SO I wonder had any one else ever re considered with the idea ?

Probably as it is not something that can take off from every household  and the skies would be crowded..

or there would have to be more airports or places or  ways to take off from not too far from ones area..

No doubt a Flying type of Car that could take off either vertically or from set take off type runway roads would be some sort of more probable solution...

QuoteThe Ford Trimotor was Henry Ford's first successful commercial aircraft venture in 1925. Following the Ford Model T as an "everyman's" vehicle, the Ford Flivver was designed to be a mass-produced "everyman's" aircraft.[2] The idea was first proposed to William Bushnell Stout, manager of Ford's acquired aircraft division in 1926. Both Stout and William Benson Mayo, head of Ford's Aircraft Division wanted nothing to do with the aircraft and it was built in a nearby museum building in the Ford Laboratories.[3]

Ford Flivver c. 1927. Note: Full-span ailerons.
The single-seat aircraft was designed with Mr. Ford's instructions that it "fit in his office".[4] The first example was displayed at the 1926 Ford National Reliability Air Tour.[5] The press and public flocked to see "Ford's Flying Car," a single-seat aircraft that had very little in common with the popular Model T "Flivver." Comedian Will Rogers posed for press photos in the aircraft (although he never flew one).[6] A New York Evening Sun columnist wrote the following poem showing excitement for the future flying Fords.
I dreamed I was an angel
And with the angels soared
But I was simply touring
The heavens in a Ford.

SO I wonder why no one else has ever continued with the idea ?

Astro, you live in England,correct?

The average person over here is a lethal weapon in a car; I shudder to think of the carnage if everyone had a personal plane...

The tech has been available and prototypes tested for flying cars for some time now; for the reason they are not on the market now, see above...

I don't disagree with most of your Comments Seeker...

But it I am sure that there  maybe something that could be considered along the lines of what Henry Ford may have been considering...

One may wonder what his vision may have been back then...OR for the future taking some of the things that have been mentioned in our posts so far as well as other things we may not as yet considered.

Back then, there was much lower populations and less cars and aircraft around.

Admittedly today... in certain locations the populations are greater and there is many more cars and aircraft.

But I suspect maybe in the 1700s you could not had envisioned the way things are today...just with cars , roads and the present population.

If they came up with some sort of flying vehicle that could be relatively cheaply produced with certain type of computer technology that also aids in the navigation of all aircraft... then maybe it could be done to some sort of relative safety..

It also may be that only a set % of the population would pass the tests required to fly...

or no doubt it maybe used more by the rich and cleverer types of people who would be more trusted..

I suppose that are numerous possibilities and ways to consider things...

but I also would be surprised if it ever came about that all homes would have one like is almost the case with cars in most of the modern world..

Flying discs maybe a better option if they have or do come up with A.G !  :)

Exactly.  8) Look at videos of people driving from around the world...

Most of the people here in the US have issues on dry pavement, much less on wet, snowy, or icy roads...

::)

It looks like a good number of drivers prefer to drive on the right, like in most countries.  :)
