Some time ago there was a TV series done after Beauty and the Beast

I bring this one up because the series focused on underground habitats that are beneath New York... Several levels in fact. One level being an old subway system

There was also one giant cavern in that series... Now that cavern is intersting because years ago they wanted to build a nuclear power plant in new york and scrubbed the planned location because there was a huge cavern under the chosen site, part of a fault zone... so they quietly moved the location and the spot is now a park

I had all the info on that years ago but not easy to find now

They recently revived one of the old stations from that abandoned subway system



But the TV show showed many many tunnels, buildings etc in the long abandoned sub terranean areas of New York

Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan is known as Little Chicago and its tunnels are rumoured to have served as a key hideout for Al Capone and other bootleggers arriving direct from Chicago along the Soo Line in the 20's and 30's.

Imho the earth is millions maybe billions of years old.

Civilizations have come and gone and therefore lots of those underground for different reasons.
