Fred Chaos, my old P.C. is alive again 8)
Fred has 3 internal hard drives packed with files that i could not reach for nearly 2 years, so now i have about 100 Gb of info to sort...Aaargh!
Fred is also very quick, he's running NT & has 2 fast dvd burners & a few extra's, like a tuner card, ethernet, modem etc
I'm so happy :D
All Hail Fred! ;D

Beautiful, He he....I whish my batcave looked like that 8)
BTW I'm preparing several threads like 'electronics for dummies' and 'let's talk Inverters' and many more to do with 'historic' inventors & modern interpretations of their work.
Later!
P.S. How did you know Fred was a black tower? LOL
Oh c'mon...who the hell makes beige towers anymore? :P
Fred was built in '95 to my specs, then we sprayed him black with some car paint ;)
Now i have a new problem; The back-up Administrator (Wilma) is asking me for a password... :o
Can't remember giving Wilma a password, now that sucks ::)
LMAO PWM!! When it rains, it gets sunny for a little while, then rains some more..LOL
Can't wait for you too get this info up and out there for us, so hurry up, try some Ginkogoloba!! LOL
Might have too start taking some Gino-Viagra, huh? LOL
1WW
Luckily i managed to siphon off a few hundred megs before Wilma stuck her nose in. I think i created her in a moment of 'the MIB's are after me' :o 8)
Now i may have to find which drive she's on (fred can boot from all 3) and disable it.
Either that or try to remember a password i taught myself to forget :o
The good news is, i can acess everything, AND i got through the password on my touchscreen panel PC. Now to install Media Player via serial net & i've got a decent jukebox for the batcave :)
Piccies tomorrow ;)

I've got 2-1 tbyte portables and they're full. So I ordered another 2 tbyte Seagate portable. I've got way too many high res moon photos! 8)
Password would be flintstones or barney.Maybe Betty or what was the dino-dogs name.
Dino
Could be, LOL..Tried most of em, even Bedrock.
Never mind, i can still access all the files it seems ::)
There are 5 computers on this bench, from right to left, iMac,Fred(AsusAthlon overclocked), The touch screen (Windoze NT), the Amiga 1200(metal case) and out of frame, my museum piece 386 PC, which is my double redundant backup.

And here is Fred;

When you boot the PC keep hitting F8 to get into safe mode...then go in and try and log in as administrator hit enter instead of entering a password if you never assigned one for admin rights. Then you can go into control panel and either delete the old account and set up a new one.
Man I am so jelous :)
Fred looks kick ass to what I have. My main machine is an Emachine T6212. I have been able to get it to run windows 7 but I think I would rather have XP. I am more familiar with it.
My second machine is down due to hard drive failure. It had the hook up for the new fancy serial hard drives so I installed one. I can get it to work with Lenex but due to driver problems I cant get it to load windows >:( It is a old Dell made in 03. Any help withe driver issue?
And last but not least is my old Compact 5000. It still works.
I can hear my fan starting to go on my Emachine >:(
All were given to me in a no working condition so I cant complain. I guess I am going to have to look around for some "new" junk ;)

If you have a retail version of XP you will need to run "FDISK" and do a low level format prior to trying to install it. If you need a driver go to the OEM Dell website and they should be there listed under the support section in downloads. You will likely need a DELL tag# and register to get it or else you may have to find it from another site. If the drive can't be formatted you have bigger problems.

Fans are dirt cheap and simple to change out. Usually a 2 or 3 wire connector. Be sure to blow out the dust bunnies to avoid overheat conditions.
Ellerium has the answers 8)
I managed to remember Wilma's password, wasn't anything to do with the Flintstones, in fact it was quite rude :P
Thanks for the info Ellerium, going to have to use that on the touchscreen...& then get a network going on it. Fred's LAN ethernet card got fried years ago (forgot) so i have to plug in a new one, lucky i've got buckets of parts laying around!.
Am now transferring files via Memory stick until i get fred online, first an enema & some anti-virus jabs LOL
Found some nice graphics from my 'light show' days ;)
Bit slow transferring the files though...

Yes, and XP needs less memory. Maybe i can send you something in the post.... ::)
Dell '93. Has to be an old IDE hard drive like the ones i have.
First is to sort out what kind of drive it is, ATA or IDE there's other types like SCSI but you won't find 'em in a Windoze PC ;)
Unplug the power cable first!
Open the case & find the HD, it's an aluminium block the size of a small book.
Try removing & inserting the POWER PLUG a few times on the HD, also the multi-pin plug (I'm guessing it's IDE) & then turn the computer on again.

I have plenty of junk, we can share it LOL!
I have all kinds of computer parts, i could send you a HD with XP on it, for example?
Just need a photo of the back end (plugs removed).....

Thanks for the comment, I have always had an affinity for this stuff since I first typed coding into a TSR-80 for days on end decades ago. I also have a dresser full of old parts and several new parts still kicking around including multiple brand new (Still in the box) PCI ethernet cards. You are most welcome to have one if you need it. All I ask is you pay the shipping and your welcome to it. (pm me if you like or email me).

Best first fire up the PC and watch the list of devices that load...if the hard drive shows there then the BIOS is having no issue seeing the firmware.

This could also be a jumper issue on IDE drives you must ensure the jumper is set according to your preference. There is a spot on the back of the cd drive and the hard drive to set them to slave and master drives. There is one other setting "CS" stands for cable select and the cable pin determines the drive preference. If ONE of these is set on CS and the other is not there will be issues. Also if you manually set a device to master and have it on the slave connector and the other drive is on CS there will be conflicts as they will both be trying to set as master. We need to first tell WHAT sort of drive you have and system.
Thanks Guys for the suggestions.
As I am snowed in again for now maybe I can work on my computers after I clean my shop up ;)
I looked through my junk and found a fan that will work on the Emachine.
I didn't explain very well what is going on with the Dell. It was given to me with a dead HD. It had the old parallel type(sata?) it also has the connections for the newer serial HD(IDE?) S that is what i put in it. The Bios sees the HD. I can also in stall Linux and it runs fine. I have tried every windows from ME to windows 7 and the same thing happens. It will format and start installation. It will get about half way through the install and the CD will pop open and ask for a disk with different drivers. A couple of weeks ago I came across a set of factory disks but ha vent tried them yet. I also down loaded all drivers for that computer but they are on my memory stick And I haven't made a CD yet. So maybe I will try both today.
About 18 in of snow so far >:(

Old parrallel type? ??? SATA drives have a solid looking red cable looks sort of like a USB cable attached to the hard drive. IDE is a 33 pin wide ribbon cable that connects it and is the same cable as on your CD drives. If you are using proprietary DELL hardware and a retail version of windows it will NOT have the correct drivers. The windows version supplied by Dell would have them in there and knowing them they use a partition on the non-functioning drive to store it on, meaning you pretty much lost it. If you have those factory CD's by all means try them...windows will search them for a driver and throw it in. Then you can always update them once your up and running to more current ones.

It depends, before SATA some PCs had SCSI drives.
E
Thanks for the info. It has been to many years that I was on top of the PC thing. It has been 20 years since I have had a new one. I have had good luck with hand me downs and old broken ones that I have been able to get running.
The new drive that I installed is a SATA. And by the way it is the first computer that I have that can take one of those fancy hi tec drives ;)
I tried the factory disks and the did not work. They were for a newer machine. I found my memory stick and must of deleted the file for the drivers at some time >:(
Well I got my shop cleaned up enough so my brother can bring over another work bench.
Also my Son is to come over tomarrow weather permitting. He thinks he can put me together a "modern" computer for about 250$ because I have a case.500G sata HD,600W power supply, extra DVD burner/ player ect. Hope he is correct.
Sorry I have been rambling
Thanks again E

Go to the dell website and you should get the correct drivers..Put them on a CD or Floppy and when the windows installation prompts you for drivers, direct it to the drive with the correct drivers.

With 250$ you can get a good motherboard (with graphics, sound and network already included on the motherboard) and memory to build a good, modern PC, seeing that you already have all the rest. :)
