Ice that took 1,600 years to form in the Peruvian Andes took only 25 years to disappear, according to a new study published in Science.
Lonnie G. Thompson, a glaciologist at Ohio State University, studied plants that had been recently exposed near Quelccaya, the world's largest tropical ice sheet, located 18,000 feet above sea level. Analysis of the plants showed that the ice cap is smaller than it has been for six thousand years.
Ultimately, Thompson was able to figure out that 1,600 years worth of ice had melted in less than three decades. The culprit? Global warming, scientists told the New York Times:
[T]he melting now under way appears to be at least as fast, if not faster, than anything in the geological record since the end of the last ice age ...
Global warming, which scientists say is being caused primarily by the human release of greenhouse gases, is having its largest effects at high latitudes and high altitudes. Sitting at high elevation in the tropics, the Quelccaya ice cap appears to be extremely sensitive to the temperature changes, several scientists said. [New York Times]
The glacier is melting so quickly, Thompson tells The Daily Mail, that he has had to archive some of the ice "at -30ºC so that creative people will have access to it 20 years from now, using instruments and techniques that don't even exist today."
That Peru's glaciers are melting isn't a surprise. Public Radio International published a story last year about a team of scientists who are doing everything — from covering ice in sawdust, to painting black rocks white to deflect heat — to slow the melting of Peru's glaciers. According to glaciologist Benjamin Morales, the glaciers have lost at least 25 percent of their ice.
The melting of the glaciers could have a dramatic impact on Peruvians. According to Reuters, the "coastal region west of the Andes range, home to two-thirds of Peru's population and 80 percent of economic activity, receives just 2 percent of the country's fresh water." Many people in the dry regions of Peru depend on the glaciers for fresh water, which is so scarce that the country is considering a $500 million project to drill a 12-mile tunnel through the Andes to bring in water from the Amazon basin.
"How much time do we have before 50 percent of Lima's or La Paz's water resources are gone?" researcher Douglas R. Hardy asks the New York Times.
Sadly, there probably isn't enough sawdust to cover all the mountains in the Andes.

The reality is that our time is almost up... global warming to this degree melts the ice, triggers massive releases of methane. The fresh water mixing with the ocean water triggers mega storms that pull cold air from space and in turn trigger the next ice age. All happens fast enough for a Mastadon to be caught frozen while digesting his last meal

First of all, the Mars situation may have nothing whatever to do with Global warming on Earth. ::)
Humans may have effected the temperature on Earth significantly. They have pumped billions of tonnes of Greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and deforested on a massive scale.
Anyone, scientist or not, who thinks that does not effect the environment is ignorant, stupid or pretending to think that for whatever reason. By the same token, global warming, cooling or whatever else is happening is bound to be a result of other factors too. Humans are likely to have less effect on global temperatures that the solar cycle for example and probably other cosmic conditions and Earthly cycles.
BOTTOM LINE: Humans do effect global temperatures. Just because they aren't the only factor does not make it clever to back up propaganda from big oil. :P

Well, I have to side with 'Z' on this, not because he is 'Z' but because he is correct in his analogy of what global warming is as a whole. We are totally aware of being able to achieve statistically viable deductive understanding of the Earths past cycles such as the Past Ice Age and such. Though there are 'Case Scenario's' that aren't openly being discussed as a potential "More harmful than the Human species'" and they always refer to their statements as "Never seen Before" or "In our recorded History" for exampled verification of such things, quite frustrating actually.
Point being, the Earths core is burning hard, it emits radioactivity at an alarming rate there by producing insurmountable amounts of energy in the form of heat and poisonous gasses being released with in our atmosphere threw Volcanic vents, there by depositing the radioactive and poisonous gases all over the planet all the time when these events occur. They evacuate, when possible, these regions for not only the danger implemented for the possible violent explosions that occur, but also for these events being able to produce such harmful, not so immediately disastrous counter effects.
Though Mountain reigns and ridges aren't considered as Volcano's, they are the remnants of high tectonic displacement, which, when they occurred caused much havoc and transformation on the face of Earth. When these events occurred, climate was altered due to the elevation of these peaks reaching into phenomenal elevations creating their own atmosphere for weather patterns, with the actual event holding temperatures from the frictional processes involved with tectonic displacement. This is what is creating the Snow caps and Glaciers we are speaking of.
Now, if we are too deduce of the footprint left by man by way of "Green House Effects" it is relatively small too what the planet puts out there as a natural state of evolution (For lack of a better word) that becomes more harmful than the counter part of mans interaction. Though I will openly admit that man has made a 'Footprint' with 'Green House Gases' but it is nothing if we start realising that the earth is about to make some big changes, from never before 'Recorded' history. We haven't seen things like this with in our environment because there was no one there too record the events atmospherically, so of course , researchers and scientists use such terminologies such as "Human Green House Effects" and "Global Warming" with in the same text of or for explanation, they simply don't know what or why it is 'TRULY' happening so quickly. Too myself it is simple "Earth is going through natural cycles of her death throws."
We are the first of a species, with help of explanation with 'Z's charts and visual effects for the understanding, are seeing nothing more than Earth Being Earth, we just can't categorize the events as normal because it is out of the 'Normal' of what we know presently.
And by the way "I would be more concerned what the Sun is up too rather than listen to these supposedly down to Earth explanations, it is a combination that is quite frightful and the ultimate demise of our planet. CME's are very prominent and we know their cycle (We think) and they are going too be the things too watch, those things celestially and intermittently bombarding our planetary surface.
Saving our planet I am all for, but the 'Global Warming' issues have more too them than what we are led too believe, after all, we know more about the Lunar surface and Mars than we know about our Oceans and Earths Core for deductive and scientific understanding.

Not just Mars, and Earth but all the planets have been seeing effects. This is documented. What we have here is not man made global warming, it's man made pollution and destroying the enviroment, with all the deforestation, pollution of air, land and water which is causing ecological problems in conjunction to what our solarsystem as a whole is going through right now.

You'll note that the period in question, the past 25 years, is precisely the period of time the HAARP arrays have been modifying our upper atmosphere, controlling jet streams by superheating the ionosphere and counteracting the ability of humans to function within the natural resonance of the earth.
There isn't anything we little people can do to stop the government from destroying all joy on this planet and changing our weather patterns short of physically removing them via force, since other actions aren't happening which could do the trick, such as withholding payments to the federal government en mass. People are scared of jail. What can you do when you're relying on cowards? Not much.
They know this. Stop blaming "people" and their bad habits for global warming (if you do), and understand that when a Mt. St. Helens blows it releases more vile toxins into our atmosphere than the entire sum of the industrial revolution--and does so in minutes. Enough with the pollution talk; it's falling on my deaf ears. Of course we shouldn't pollute! We're humans; humans pollute. It's a symptom of humanity...to be minimized where possible, but it will always be a symptom.
When the sun rises, the exposed earth gets warmer. When the sun sets, the unexposed earth tends to cool. This is science. The rest is pure speculation.

What I am saying is that global warming is NOT, being affected by man affects to the extent we are seeing it. What I am saying is that ALL the planets are seeing this changes in their tempatures and atmospheric effects ect.....all of our planets.
In regards to the pollution that which is man made. It IS having an effect on the ecosystems of the world. The man made pollution which comes in many many many forms. Takes it's effect on the delicate balance and it all adds ups. Speaking of adding up The energy that ALL the planets are going through, in this upgrade of sorts of vibration that one can look at is that in combination with the man-made effects are contributing to things that we are seeing but yet again, The Man made global warming is a Fallacy, it really is. What is going on is the posioning of the planet and it's ecosystem and that in itself is a real problem and danger for the various lifeforms that relies on the Cycle of Life action.
We are indeed at a cross-roads or point of transition. Depends on people's take on things. Perhaps things are meant to die off and what not so that new species can develop and grow? This can happen naturally by the upgrades in frequency the universe dulls out. Also coupled with any "tinkering" that "might" happen along the way. By whom? Well............ I leave that to everyone's imagination. ;)
So while we , the planet and the solar system is in this upgrade-transitional point we as humans on this planet must try to better the planet and relieve the stresses on ourselves and our ecosystems so that we all, humans, all life forms and the planet can go through the the changes of the Natural flow and cycles that the Universe goes through which includes our solar system.

Well a while back at ATS and I copied it here... I showed that our solar system might not be native to the Milky Way... but moved here when the Sagittarius Galaxy collided. It would certainly explain our odd movement (bobbing up and down in 250 LY 'bobs' through the rim)
NASA and others have said we are entering a denser region of space. Now they don't really explain what they mean precisely and I don't know what they mean... but is it a coincidence that we are currently moving back into the remaining streamer of the Sagittarius Galaxy?

The ice core chart shows this is a normal cycle recorded over the last 400,000 years or so, at which time Antarctica was covered with forests and lakes, not ice. Mankind was supposedly not around then to have cause that :P
But I find it interesting that the evidence suggests we are the fifth civilization on Earth and I see exactly 5 cycles of warming periods in that record... coincidence?

HAARP and all the other similar arrays around the world (see thread :P ) can also put up a shield around the planet, originally intendeded to stop ICBM's but also to replace the magenetic field of Earth itself which has been 'flickering' of late and threatens to do a pole swap and leave us exposed for an unknown length of time.
It will have to remain to be seen whether HAARP in the long term is evil or saves our ass :D

20 years ago I worked outside most of the day... the sun felt warm but never painful. Today I step outside and the sun is definitely doing more damage to the skin
Back in Ancient Egypt they wore sarongs and ran around with little clothing, so did natives around the world, so did the Greeks and Romans. Today in Egypt they wear full cotton robes and head wraps to protect from the sun.

Back in Medieval England they built castles of stone... they were comfortable didn't need insulation. Then the MINI ICE AGE happened and they invented windows, tapestries on the walls and the fireplace to warm those now drafty cold castles.

Greed of knowledge is not a bad thing per se. It is bad when people horde it and use many forms to enact that keep this information/knowledge away from people.
I recently said in another post of mine that which drives us all, at the core of our being is the quest for the Truth and knowledge of ourselves, the universe and life.

The only way to kill the monster is to deprive it of funds; nothing else will work, and we need to decide it's finally OVER together (in sufficient numbers as to create ultimatums), or again, it won't work.
I am on board with cleaning the planet, just not idio-engineering the place beyond our comprehension level, which is being done now.

Some 'secrets' must remain so for the safety of all. Secret Orders simply keep it secret so they can teach it in proper order, to teach the wisdom along with the knowledge. Anyone can join... if they are serious enough :P But most choose to thump their chest and demand it be published in public domain :P
Lets see... 4 million (.01%) of Muslims are extremists... lets give them the plans for all those WMD's :D And what of all the home grown lunatics that would use this knowledge to blow up your house and family?
You really thing all knowledge available should be made available to all?
I do however agree that many of those who do hold that knowledge today are not the right keepers :P

Secrets are kept to refuse others entrance into your realm, to conceal activities to protect life and to cover up the truth.
To protect lives is a good reason, but as for the rest--I don't seem to have much time for control freak gatekeepers who employ an "us or them" mentality in their approach to dealing with others.
Every sentient being desires knowledge, and the gathering of it is our purpose. The concealing of knowledge is an abomination and a hindrance to all of humanity. We could evolve MUCH quicker if not for gatekeeper control freaks running the show.
ALL military and government ops and actions should be declassified in one year's time, not hidden indefinitely to allow the perpetrators of high crimes bury all evidence, as is the case today. What the government does (supposedly in OUR NAME) is definitely our business as citizens, and how dare any say otherwise? --lest they be traitors or idiots.
All advancements technologically should be shared. If I advance the human experience in some meaningful new direction I want everyone to benefit, not just my closest drinkin' buddies. If we're not here to advance the species, and we're just doing all this research and experimentation to benefit Chuck and Alice then it's over; I'm wasting my time, and I certainly HOPE that is not the case.

But to find the "Answers", One has to ask the Right Questions.
Religion and other human beliefs can NOT provide the Correct "Answers" !
We have to 1st know ourselves then go back to the "Root" of ourselves The Real You,
i.e. the LIFE, Referring to "Self Awareness" which existed before any Universes did,
to get the Correct "Answers"..
If we ask the Wrong Questions we get the Wrong Answers and go Nowhere.
BUT IF we ask the "Right Questions" we get the "Right Answers".
This is Due to the "Double Logic" within our human Genome !
So you won't get the Answers through the human Species !
All you are going to get is Paranoia, suspicion, mistrust and Fear.
If you go back to your "Root" (Nothing to do with religious beliefs) a new world
will unfold to You.. :)
But to achieve this you have to start at the "Beginning" or "Awakening" Once again !
