Title: [Humour] Obama Pushing for USA Conversion to Metric
Post by: Somamech on May 15, 2013, 07:16:46 PM
I posed this question to colleagues yesterday, "If an American President would take a leap of faith and convert America to Using Metric, would he/she be re-elected?"

I received some puzzled response's once people thought about this hypothetical... My opinion is that I kinda doubt a prez would be reelected if the vote were not rigged :D

Going metric in the USA was being pushed when I was in high school.  I graduated in 1974.  My high school has been reincarnated twice since then, and has changed its mascot from the politically incorrect Warriors, to Wolves.  Time's fun when you're having flies.

Ahh, no fractions to deal with, no quarts, pints or gallons pounds. Just weigh it.

That happened in Canada...  people forgot that a 3 cent increase on a litre was a 12 cent increase on a gallon. They would have screamed at a 12 cent increase on a gallon, but complacently accepted the  3 cents on a litre.

Then they did something else... they knew people uswed gas more for the weekends so they hiked prices thursday afternoon and dropped them monday afternoon  for the weekend travellers. A smart person filled up tues to thurs :D

Metric is better... it is easier to use... but yeah they will suck you dry at the pumps

BOYCOTT EXXON  at least send a message to the nastiest one :D

Right now we are already using metric in a lot of industries. The convention business most of the parts are metric. I always use a metric/standard tape measure and its a required tool in the trade

But lumber will also be effected once upon a time a 2x4 was 2" x 4".  We built our cottage in Canada using reclaimed lumber and they were those old 2x4s  Today a 2x4 is really 1 1/2" x 3 1/2"

With metric it will drop again saving the lumber mills wood thus more profit

Around £1.40 a litre.  Over 80 percent of which is tax. We are being robbed blind at every level.

We pay the same in Oz right now for Motor Juice per litre.  But when you add in the currency conversion from AUD to GBP we are paying more.  Damn Currency  ;D

We pay pretty much more for everything here!

Metric is quite a fascinating topic to explore when one is frustrated with constantly converting between the pair of systems :D

We tend to jump between the  two systems all the time. Like I still talk in miles per hour but will measure in metric cos its just so much easier . But I will weigh in stones and pounds . It's prob much better to be all metric but it seems very cold and mechanical in certain instances.  If that makes sense.

It does make sense !

Although I grew up in a Metric Oz, my family didn't :D

I understand Feet and Inch's and that's about as far as my off the cuff understanding extends. Liquid's and weight's in their imperial measure annoy the heck out of me.  Right now I am supposed to running this far or eating this and that and its all presented in Imperial...   ;D

I might tear a yard of twine from my scalp at this rate of knots :D

Here in the great smoky Rocky Mountains, people weight themselves in pounds, but medications are calculated in mg/kg of body weight.  When I worked at the hospital, we had to weigh anyone who was admitted.  We had staff members who refused to weigh people in kg, because the staff member couldn't understand how much that meant in pounds.  That equates to an inability to read and copy a displayed number from a piece of equipment.

I have to say Shasta that your experience doe's highlight one thing quite well, and that is the ability to adapt :D

I have had some file's from Boeing where they needed to be converted from Inches to Millimeter's which rendered me quite shocked they work in that format.  Luckily the software converted between the two measure standard's... but all the same I was surprised!

On the rare occasion when I do have to convert from inch to mm at work it's quite funny when you forget to tick the box and say "WTF how in hell is that going to fit in our build envelope".  At that point after some profanity one realise's that one forgot to convert from inch to mm :D

Ahh yeah I know what you mean ;)

But what is 22nm in imperial ?  This is the manufacturing process of the latest Intel processor's :D

I could almost start a another thread about the English Language, and the discrepancy's of those that speak (Spout?) it fluently and not understand what the other is saying LOL

Like I said.. this is in the humor section and it's only meant as some good fun ;)

HARRP got to me on this thread :D

LOL I remember that... I remeber laughing at how a simple 1-10 number system confused an entire country to the point they had to revert. I always wondered how the hell did they work with hexadecimal programming then?  :P

just found this, I agree with Elvis on this one but we (the UK) still flit back and forth
between every system there is. it's crazy.especially with nuts & bolts stuff.

you occasionally need different thread sizes for different applications but the size
of the tool SHOULD be metric. Then there are all these fixing type's its mental!
allen key, torx, slot, cross head, phillips, pin torx, triangle, tapered square, offset 3's,6 sided
5 sided, tech head, plasi head, internal, external, male, female on and on. it's too much!
(lot of slang amongst those but you get the idea)
it's a conspiracy I tell ya to milk the tool trades for loot.
