Just thinking, , , , ,
1. If they landed in the bottom of the big crack they wouldn't need pressure suits.
2. If they used small thermonuclear devices to carve out underground caves it would be easy to keep an atmosphere going. Radiation dissipation would take less than a month.
3. We now know that there is lots of water still on Mars. Thus water, hydrogen fuel, and oxygen to breath.
4. Green houses to grow the food.

It is MHO that we already have the tech to go where we want to inter-system, have for quite sometime, and do have personnel already there...

but that is just my humble opinion...
