Huge numbers of people on Earth are keen to leave the planet forever and seek a new life homesteading on Mars.

About 78,000 people have applied to become Red Planet colonists with the nonprofit organization Mars One since its application process opened on April 22, officials announced Tuesday. Mars One aims to land four people on the Red Planet in 2023 as the vanguard of a permanent colony, with more astronauts arriving every two years thereafter.

"With 78,000 applications in two weeks, this is turning out to be the most desired job in history," Mars One Chief Executive Officer and co-founder Bas Lansdorp said in a statement. Well this is the Mars One Humvee... at least they will have classy wheels, not like that silly Moon Rover that didn't fit into the landers

100 Year Starship: Interstellar Space Travel Conference Warps Into Houston This Week

Move over, Scotty: Some real-life engineers and scientists are flocking to Houston this week to debate the future of interstellar space travel.

Members of the public, industry professionals and academics have descended upon the Texas city for the third annual 100 Year Starship symposium, which will discuss what the world needs to do in the next 100 years to take starship technology out of the realm of science fiction and into reality.

The conference started today (Sept. 19) and runs through Sunday (Sept. 22). It's hosted by the 100 Year Starship initiative, which was started with seed money from the U.S. military's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and seeks to develop a vehicle over the next century that could reach a far-off star within a reasonable amount of time.

1. If they landed in the bottom of the big crack they wouldn't need pressure suits.
2. If they used small thermonuclear devices to carve out underground caves it would be easy to keep an atmosphere going. Radiation dissipation would take less than a month.
3. We now know that there is lots of water still on Mars. Thus water, hydrogen fuel, and oxygen to breath.
4. Green houses to grow the food.
