This 70-Year-Old Woman Ran A Marathon On Every Continent In 1 Week

Chau Smith is a 70-year-old Missouri runner who has competed in approximately 70 races. Last year, she decided she wanted to set the bar even higher for herself with a new goal: Run seven marathons on seven continents in the span of one week.

And she did it.

Smith ran in Perth, Australia, Cairo, Amsterdam, Singapore, New York, Chile and King George Island, Antarctica in January. She'd wake up, run the marathon, then board a plane to the next location.

The runner is part of a travel group called Marathon Adventures and embarked on the task with nine other members. She decided to take on the challenge, which was called the Triple 7 Quest, as a way to celebrate her birthday ? a milestone that has more meaning than most.

Smith's legal age is 67. She told The Huffington Post that after her father was killed in the French occupation of Vietnam during the First Indochina War, her mother went into hiding while pregnant with Smith for their safety. After she was born in 1947, her mother didn't report it for three years. That's why she wanted to honor turning her real age ? 70 ? this year in a special way.

"As I approached my 70th birthday, I wondered what I could finish from my bucket list, so I decided to do the Triple 7 Quest," Smith told HuffPost.

She trained for eight months to get ready for the challenge. Her preparation also included working with a running coach, a physical therapist and a nutritionist as well as practicing her pacing, she told NBC News. Normally, she can run the 26.2 miles in about five hours, but she said she wanted to make sure she kept up her stamina for all the races.

The runner credits physical activity with keeping her healthy and happy. And research supports her theory: Studies show regular exercise can help keep the brain sharp, increase longevity and decrease anxiety.

"It was never my intention to become a long distance runner, but the more I ran, the better I felt ... no matter how stressful my life has been or is running is the best therapy I've ever had," Smith told HuffPost. "So, I'm hooked on running because I can clear my head and make better decisions."

Now she's what we call fitness goals.

I'd respect her if she wasn't wearing that stupid hat.

Is there an "official" Snowflake hat? ???

Somamech

A snowflake would not do what she did because they are too busy being whiner's.

A Woman wearing a Garbage Bag would not do what she did because they are too busy wondering if they will be executed.

Chau Smith Did it because she can, and along the way she has inspired me!

Go Chau!  8)

Hey Otter you should check this out!

Indian Pacific Wheel Race:

https://curvecycling.bike/pages/indian-pacific-wheel-race

Local Lass Sarah Hammond in 3rd place.

QuoteThe #IPWR is a 5,500km (3,400mi) unsupported cycling race.

Starting in Fremantle, on the westcoast of Australia, it crosses the sparse Nullarbor plains, through to lush surrounds and urban scapes of Adelaide, on to Melbourne via the iconic Great Ocean rd and then on through the Australian Alps to finish at Sydney Opera House.

No teams, no support, no drafting.

A Women at the half way point is sitting in 3rd place.  I'm glued to all the participant's GPS tracker's and social media in amazement!

The top three should be cloned for NASA missions...they really know no boundaries  ;D

I like the hat myself but that is a personal choice I guess!

Better to keep warm than get hypothermia which I have first hand seen participating in a 100km Ultra Marathon.  In this case the poor dude was way fitter than me but for whatever reason he was on the ground in space blanket's waiting for an ambulance shaking like my grandpa when he was alive with parkinson's rather than finishing his goal.

Being prepared aint a look LOL

Are you aware of what the hat represents?

It's called a "pussy hat" and the feminists are wearing it to represent women's rights.

I think it's gross. People can't seem to protest without using disgusting language.

I really don't care so much, if it keep's your head warm, get's you through 42km of running then go for it.  It's just a hat.

All a hat does is keep the sun off your head, or the rain.  It can promote certain cause's, but cause's are forgotten quicker than the sand moving in the desert.

Oddly I must ask, why are women running with a Vagina Hat so offensive?

Mate,

This is what I viewed in the OP:

I viewed a 70yo woman running around the world, not the best effort mind you for 70yo's, but much better than 99.9 percent of the population here on earth. I would bump that stat higher, but there is no higher than 99.9 for a forum in this context... as I hope you understand the point I am making.

She was a Human who had the abiltiy to run and do something amazing.  That is what I saw.  I would like to think she inspire's half the people here to do the same!  Why wait for a drug to fix you when you can live life huh?

Sorry.

I'm mourning the death of class.

Probably not offensive at all, just a "symbolic" trend of what some women have become, in replacement of their "thinking parts". Men have been accused of this for eons, by the way, so I guess you could say "Equality IS Equality".  :o

I think the running lady is great by the way! :)

Somamech

Yeah its really odd that Class on this forum of all place's, can be dragged into a discussion where an old friend of mine who happen's to be an old women posting to a 41 yo guy who reside's on a different continent becomes a trigger.

Honeslty, a woman run's in her 70's, an older women know's how much I love seeing people become better than they can be and she post's it here and then it become's an issue of Vagina Hat's ?

You can't make this up.

It's utterly bizzare!

And people thought Matrix was weird LOL
