If so the question becomes does this life have any DNA connection to Earth (via cross contamination through meteorites).

If it is found to have no connection to Earth and has evolved independently, this would indicate the Universe is teeming with life.

It could be that he processed the greyscale images just like the Hubble site invites the public to do for them with their greyscale images -

create a red, blue and green version of the greyscale, them merge them together for the color images we are all familiar with.
