People in Portugal eat almost any thing.

Not me, from all that list I would eat only the potatoes, but only a little, because of my diabetes. 

But there are other things, like chouriço assado, that I like.



PS: chouriço, like blood chouriço, is a kind of hard, smoked sausage that, because of being smoked, lasts a long time, traditionally hanged from a nail in the pantry or kitchen.

PPS: chouriço assado is better when instead of burning alcohol we use aguardente, a kind of brandy.

Here are some images, with the Portuguese name.

Fried anchovies (anchovas fritas).


Grilled sardines, on bread (sardinhas assadas no pão), a dish that thousands of people will be eating this night, as tomorrow is St. Antony day, holiday in some Portuguese locations, including Lisbon.


A kind of blood chouriço (chouriço de sangue) that is not smoked, only boiled.


The kind that is smoked.


Pig's ears (orelha de porco).


Octopus salad (salada de polvo).


Snails (caracóis), that are usually accompanied with cold beer.


Grilled peppers (pimentos assados)


Cod cakes (pastéis de bacalhau). These I like.


Another version of cod cakes, this one called pataniscas de bacalhau, made almost as a "puffy omelet".


Grilled alheira (alheira assada). The alheira is "fake" sausage, created by Jews so people thought they were eating pork. Instead of pork, like almost all other Portuguese sausages, it's made mostly with chicken or duck. I also like this.


Small garden fishes (peixinhos da horta). These are usually green beans covered with flour and egg and fried. Portuguese Jesuit missionaries used to eat them in Japan, where they became very popular and are now known as "tempura".


PS: "tapas" is the Spanish version, in Portugal we call them "petiscos".

If Klingons invaded Portugal I wouldn't be surprised if someone would make a Klingon dish, probably with a little olive oil and garlic, accompanied by white rice. 

PS: there's a story, "Abomination With Rice", by a Welsh author that spends a lot of time in Portugal, in which Portuguese people eat Cthulhu with rice.

ArMap, I have had a lot of ethnic foods local to a lot of different places; your countrymen are in line with a lot of other places around the globe, and I understand the concept that nothing goes to waste; but like you, the cod cakes look good; the kalimari salad and the blood sausage I will pass on; at least pop the head off the sardine

ArMap, I have had a lot of ethnic foods local to a lot of different places; your countrymen are in line with a lot of other places around the globe, and I understand the concept that nothing goes to waste; but like you, the cod cakes look good; the kalimari salad and the blood sausage I will pass on; at least pop the head off the sardine 

The sardine on that photo is a little too big to be eaten whole, the smaller ones (more or less half that size) are usually eaten whole, head, bones, everything, but for that they must be well grilled.

And yes, traditionally, nothing goes to waste (today is different), with every part of an animal had some use. For example, we may eat a chicken roasted, but we take the liver, the neck and other parts that are not eaten in a roasted chicken and either make a new dish with them (pipis) or we use them to make chicken broth, usually with some rice.

We also used to eat lamb or pig brains, usually mixed with scrambled eggs.

It has some similarities, but the Portuguese version is made with pork meat (the leftovers from cutting the pig), garlic and the pig's blood mixed with vinegar.

Edited to add that many dishes are common all over Europe, only with some local differences, one result of the mixing of the people from all over Europe. For example, in the north of Portugal we have a small area where, in some festivities, men wear the traditional clothes, with a skirt similar to those from Scotland, and the similarity is a result of some Scottish men that came to Portugal several centuries ago.

I think I will pass on the food and just have the beer.  Those snails do not look like something I could enjoy
