Even if I'm not living in the states, i find the founding fathers great !

And all the people who have contributed to create the "Bill Of Rights", "Constitution" and the "Declaration of Independence" also.

These are very smart people, who have very wisely created the 3 documents.

From us too, Independence Day.
I know that I know nothing - thanks Capricorn.

I have an Uncle who is Dual Citizen with Oz ( My aunt) .. I would imagine right now he would want to burn the place down due to those documents and what they are supposed to represent.  ;)

In Portugal we don't celebrate the independence day, but we celebrate the day we regained independence, in December 1, 1640, from Spain, after the death of the only successors to the Portuguese throne.

The day that marked the "birth" of Portugal as an independent entity is not that easy to establish, as first there was a battle (24 June 1128) between the future king of Portugal, Afonso Henriques, and his mother's armies, that was really the start of Afonso Henriques as ruler of the country. After he reconquered part of what was then Moorish territory he was proclaimed king of Portugal, in 1139, so Portugal was recognised as an independent kingdom by other countries in 1143 and by the Pope in 1179.

I'll remember that day !

He was, but he was mostly busy with reconquering the west part of the Iberian peninsula from the Moors and fighting the king of León, that didn't recognized Portugal as a new country.

He did, and that's one of the reasons I'm Portuguese and not Spanish. ;D

That's no surprise, many people don't even know their country's history, so it's no surprise they do not know other countries' history. I don't have the slightest idea of who was the first German king. :)
