Despite information campaigns, new treatment facilities that reduce disease transmission and an effective new vaccine, the outbreak is spreading because of ongoing violence and residents' deep distrust of government. Doctors say they're terrified by the spread of the worst-ever Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

More than 1,100 people have died since August.

1,760 cases have been reported; a fifth of them in the past month alone.

This is the tenth Ebola outbreak in DR Congo since the disease was discovered there more than 40 years ago.

Aid workers are calling for money and protection after three people were killed in an attack on a treatment centre last week.

The World Health Organization has recorded at least 119 attacks on health workers since the start of the year.

Why is the country being repeatedly hit by the disease?

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are described in the last book of the New Testament of the Bible, the Book of Revelation by John of Patmos, at 6:1–8. The chapter tells of a book or scroll in God's right hand that is sealed with seven seals. The Lamb of God opens the first four of the seven seals, which summons four beings that ride out on white, red, black, and pale horses.

The prophecy describes a period of time when a quarter of the population of the earth would be killed by a combination of wars, famine and disease. The prophecy describes the causes as

1) a conquering people whose weapon was the bow "I looked, and there before me was a white horse! Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown, and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest."

2) a people engaged in constant war "Then another horse came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make men slay each other. To him was given a large sword."

3) high food prices leading to famine "before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, "A quart of wheat for a day's wages, and three quarts of barley for a day's wages, and do not damage the oil and the wine!" and

4) disease " I looked and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him.". These four are then summed up as follows "They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by the sword (war), famine, and plague and by the wild beasts of the earth". The sword refers to the first 2 horsemen, famine to the 3rd, and plague and beasts of the earth to the 4th.[1]

Though theologians and popular culture differ on the first Horseman, the four riders are often seen as symbolizing Conquest[2] or Pestilence (and less frequently, the Christ or the Antichrist), War,[3] Famine,[4] and Death.[5] The Christian apocalyptic vision is that the Four Horsemen are to set a divine apocalypse upon the world as harbingers of the Last Judgment.[2][6] One reading ties the Four Horsemen to the history of the Roman Empire subsequent to the era in which the Book of Revelation was written as a symbolic prophecy.[7]

... "Of more than 90,000 people who were vaccinated, only 71 went on to develop Ebola. Fifty-six of those people developed symptoms fewer than 10 days after being vaccinated, suggesting the vaccine had not yet had time to fully protect them. It is believed it takes about 10 days for immune protection to develop after vaccination.

Only 15 people developed Ebola more than 10 days after being vaccinated, the report said. Seven of them were health-care workers. Nearly 29,000 health-care and front-line workers were among the roughly 90,000 vaccinated between last August and March 25, the time period covered by the report..."

The WHO report explains it better.

They used what they call "ring vaccination", in which they identify people that got in contact with Ebola patients and then they identify people that were in contact with those in direct contact. They identified 100,754 persons and got consent to give them the vaccine from 91,492.

I doubt it spreads through the air, the infection rate would be much higher.

But it could spread through the air from other animals to humans, as experiments have shown that infected pigs get more virus in their lungs than in their blood and so they can transmit it through breathing, coughing, etc. The virus spread that way can infect primates, but they do not say which primates can be infected and humans are also primates.

Hi ArMaP, eventually it will mutate into a form of the virus that will spread by aerosol.

I really know nothing about this topic, but I don't think a virus changes their basic way of functioning easily, and I think that change would be big.

Every time there is an outbreak you are looking at a mutation.

Every time there is an outbreak you are looking at a mutation.

That's usually true, but those are small mutations, only small enough for the antibodies that "learned" out to fight the old "version" of the virus not be able to recognise the new "version".

To change from being able to live mostly in the blood to living in the lungs, like happens when the host is a pig, I suppose a big change is needed, as that behaviour is probably related to the a specific characteristic of the pig that is not present in primates.
