Fukushima Fallout Express
( Jet Stream )
Spawns Epic U.S. Ice Storm

UPDATE 2 PM: Here's a map comparing the forecast for this week's storm versus the one in January 2009,
which killed 23 people and knocked out power to 1,400,000 customers:

Oops !

Much bigger impact this time, and the 'squall line' keeps moving Southward with each update.
  :P

ORIGINAL POST: The forecasts are coming into agreement on a major ice storm over the next week,
one that could last for several days, causing "regional" power outages.
Indeed, some of the ice amounts that the forecasts are printing out are extreme.

The map above shows the estimated ice (sleet + freezing rain accumulation)
from our internal "AccuModel" (a model blend tweaked by our meteorologists).

Clearly, it's off the chart.

Part of this is because the ice will simply last for such a long time...
the GFS model has been forecasting that the ice (red & orange) could last nearly two days.

This would be terrible for power outages:

- January 2009 ice storm (1.4 million lost power)
- December 2007 ice storm (1.2 million)
- Dec. 12, 2008, ice storm (1 million)
- Dec. 15, 2005, ice storm: (700,000)
- Others (including 1998, at 3-4 million).

Yesterday, the 4KM NMM model printed out 5 inches of sleet!

Don't eat the yellow snow!   :P

The Sperry-Piltz Ice Accumulation Index (SPIA), a newly developed ice storm rating system, will be interesting to watch during this event, although forecasts only go out 36 hours.

Locked and loaded and we'll see.   :P

This is what is looked like when OPERATIONS TREE DISASTER RELIEF TEAM rolled into the January, 2009 ice storm.

And this from a few minutes ago:   :P

Frost quakes a real possibility, geologist says
By MICHAEL ROKNICK, The Sharon Herald
Posted: 01/24/14, 4:54 PM EST |

SHARON, Pa. (AP) — If you heard a bang or felt the earth shake a bit Tuesday night you weren't alone.

The noise and accompanying vibration were reported from Hubbard to South Pymatuning Township.

Unlike the mysterious explosion sounds people reported hearing last summer in various parts of Mercer County, this sound was literally closer to home.

"It was like something hit the house," people said over and over again.

While he can't say with scientific certainty, geologist Lindell Bridges said he believes the sound came from a phenomenon known as cryoseisms - more commonly known as frost quakes.

"I think it's a very good possibility," Bridges said of the clamor and vibrationst. "I think that's exactly what you heard."

The president of Pure Earth Resources LLC in Sharpsville is called upon for his services in the oil, gas and mining industries. And while he never experienced a frost quake firsthand, he believes there's a strong case to be made that such an event occurred in the area.

"It's pretty uncommon for it to happen — but that doesn't mean it didn't happen," he said.

During past couple weeks frost quakes have been reported in Canada, Wisconsin, Vermont, Cincinnati and elsewhere.

Two primary elements are needed to trigger frost quakes - water saturated ground and a sharp drop in temperature. Both conditions were present; heavy rains last week soaked the ground and in recent days temperatures rapidly dropped more than 40 degrees.

Frost quakes occur mainly at night when temperatures bottom out. As the water in the ground freezes, it expands and cracks the soil, bedrock or stones around it to create room.

"It's something like an earthquake, Bridges said. "The reason you get an earthquake is stress builds up in the ground and it breaks and releases stored-up energy."

There are significant differences. Earthquakes occur a mile or two beneath the surface when fault lines shift. Frost quakes are five feet beneath the surface or closer.

"It sounds like the near surface groundwater was frozen and built up some stress and finally exceeded the stress limit and it broke just like an earthquake - only much closer to the surface," Bridges said.

Besides the sound and vibration, people have reported seeing distant flashing lights before or during frost quakes. Those likely are caused by electrical changes when rocks are compressed. Cracks and fissures may also be seen on the surface, which can range from a few inches up to a couple miles.

Bridges advised anyone who might have experienced a frost quake to check around their homes.

"I would inspect around the house to see if anything is out of order," he said. "I doubt that it would crack a foundation. But if you have a natural gas or water line and smell or see gas or water seeping, call the gas or water company. Those lines are probably deeper than any damage you might see on the surface - but it's better to be safe than sorry."

Mercer County 911 said dispatchers had not received any reports of loud sounds or damage.

Rare Earthquake Warning Issued for Oklahoma

Mile for mile, there are almost as many earthquakes rattling Oklahoma as California this year. This major increase in seismic shaking led to a rare earthquake warning this week from the U.S. Geological Survey and the Oklahoma Geological Survey.

In a joint statement on Monday, the agencies said the risk of a damaging earthquake — one larger than magnitude 5.0 — has significantly increased in central Oklahoma.

Geologists don't know when or where the state's next big earthquake will strike, nor will they put a number on the increased risk. "We haven't seen this before in Oklahoma, so we had some concerns about putting a specific number on the chances of it," Robert Williams, a research geophysicist with the USGS Earthquake Hazards Program in Golden, Colorado, told Live Science. "But we know from other cases around the world that if you have an increasing number of small earthquakes, the chances of a larger one will go up." [Watch 2500+ Oklahoma Earthquakes Since 2012 (Video)]

That's why earthquakes of magnitude 5 and larger are more frequent in states such as California and Alaska, where thousands of smaller temblors hit every year.

This is the first time the USGS has issued an earthquake warning for a state east of the Rockies, Williams said. Such seismic hazard assessments are more typically issued for Western states following large quakes, to warn residents of the risk of damaging aftershocks, he said.

The geological agencies took action after the rate of earthquakes in Oklahoma outpaced that of even California for the first few months of 2014. (California regained the lead in April.) [The 10 Biggest Earthquakes in History]

"The rate of earthquakes increased dramatically in March and April," Williams said. "That alerted us to examine this further and put out this advisory statement."

April 29, 2015 -- 11am Hawaii Time -- The lava lake inside the the Kilauea volcanic crater has now fully overflowed into the greater crater !!

Full website post here, with screenshots of the event as it built up over the past several days (and weeks): 4/27/2015 — Lava Lake in Hawaii at record levels — Locals come from miles around to see rare event | Dutchsinse

This rare event is being watched closely by the USGS , and local Hawaii residents who have not seen this kind of activity before in this particular lava lake.

No one knows what the next step in this event will be, but ultimately everyone who studies this volcano knows that these very high levels of lava will eventually build to a point where the lava lake drains-- forming new lava flows on the flanks of Kilauea + Pu'u O'o volcanic complexes.

I did a full explanation on WHY these event is happening, see that video from a day ago (April 28th) here:

This small earthquake event is a sign of the greater pressure on the carton.

Back in Toronto we used to have on average over 750 small earthquakes annually  all below 3.0

So what does that mean? Well as long as there are several small quakes continuously the pressure doesn't have a chance to build to a Big Snap like we saw in Japan

Look at the Richter scale...  it is based on a ten fold logarithmic system

So looking at the USA Annually...

Less than 2.0   Micro   I   Microearthquakes, not felt, or felt rarely by sensitive people. Recorded by seismographs.   Continual/several million per year

2.0–2.9   Minor   I to II   Felt slightly by some people. No damage to buildings.   Over one million per year

3.0–3.9   II to IV   Often felt by people, but very rarely causes damage. Shaking of indoor objects can be noticeable.   Over 100,000 per year

IRIS doesn't even bother listing them until they are a 4.0

http://ds.iris.edu/seismon/

A few years ago at ATS there was a big Bruhaha over Alaska getting a swarm of over 120 quakes in a few days,,, Scary huh?  But when you look at the history of those Aleutian Islands you will see that is about normal :P

I see this was a year ago  but here is today's reading from Oklahoma

29-APR-2015 16:42:26   36.29   -97.53   4.1   2   0   OKLAHOMA     5112272
04-APR-2015 13:21:17   36.13   -97.57   4.2   5   18   OKLAHOMA     5109477
27-APR-2015 22:22:17   35.95   -97.35   4.1   4   41   OKLAHOMA     5112074
19-APR-2015 05:27:15   35.94   -97.34   4.1   8   43   OKLAHOMA     5111078
08-APR-2015 20:51:59   35.85   -97.42   4.3   5   50   OKLAHOMA     5109882

Gotta love 'scientists' Seems there are 20 opinions all touted as fact :D  Some say the small earthquake relieving pressure is a myth, others say dropping nukes along the fault to bump it along is the answer.  Even USGS says there are not enough small ones to stop the occasional bug one from happening "So, even though we always record many more small events than large ones, there are far too few to eliminate the need for the occasional large earthquake."

California and Alaska get more quakes because they are on the Ring of Fire  DOH!!! Alaska is a subduction zone like Japan and the Aluetian Is are a long sting of volcanoes

There are faults all over the world  Some active others not recorded yet. When we bought our house here in Vegas I got a soil study map from the county  showing the under ground rivers, subduction areas and fault lines  This is one but I have a large more detailed map

People seem to forget that all the mountain ranges in the US were created by earth movement :P and are still forming

Quayle Alert: Jade Helm Revenge Starts? Bastrop TX Stood Up Against the Jade Helm Excercise & Look What's Happening -Deadly Weather Warfare Right Before our Eyes Against Them

Tuesday, May 26, 2015 8:21

As I'm looking through breaking news headlines, and seeing the continuous references to the extreme weather so concentrated over TX, and coupled with the continuous chemtrailing that happens throughout the US, I can't help but think that what is going on right now as part of the Jade Helm "exercise", could not actually be the domestic roll out of weather warfare on an aggressive scale. We know they can control the weather to at least some degree.

We know that the chemtrailing over CA and in the Pacific modifies the jet stream to both keep CA dry and to force that precipitation east towards TX and other southern states. We know that Jade Helm is "pretending" that TX is a hostile enemy that must be engaged. The military is already rolling out across the state as part of this "drill".

Why then, is it not reasonable to assume that as part of this "mock civil war drill" that they would not practice using the tools that they have in their arsenal? They used typhoons against the enemy in the Vietnam War, why would they not use this form of warfare against a domestic enemy as well?

I mean, how perfect is it that the military will be on hand to help "assist" the state with any effects of this "freak weather"?

The citizens would stand down as the military rolls into major cities to assist in "humanitarian efforts" as opposed to protesting martial law drills in their peaceful state.

It's just too coincidental that this Jade Helm thing is going on with TX the stated target, the biker shooting in Waco involved the Banditos gang which a year ago Holder's (criminal) Justice Dept released a report about that gang and stated concern that they have many active and retired military, police and other federal government personnel as members (one of their "red list" targets that now they can portray as criminals), AND on top of all that TX is being completely hammered with extreme weather that seems suspiciously like what one would characterize as weather war.

I'm sorry, but to me this all seems too coincidental and too perfectly timed not to be part of an orchistrated and unified program. This is just conjecture but as we know, the truth is most often stranger than fiction.

Thought maybe I'd share this perspective as something to be considering as the alternative media tries to stay a step ahead of where they want us to be.

May God bless and protect you!

Gee I wonder what people did before all the neat pretty radar images beamed to their home computers. I remember a local weatherman back in the 50's using a whiteboard to hand draw the paths of hurricanes! The earth is an evolving moving piece of rock and water. In this in depth report, Rex covers: litter, runoff, Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), particulates coming in from the jet stream and nuclear radiation coming from places like Fukushima; yet none of these compare to the genetic roulette we are playing with GMOs.

We know the consequential damages of pollution, but do we really know the dangers of GMOs, and can we trust our government to tell us?

And it has been a very odd year  80F in Jan  cool till end of May (I needed no Ac till June) Then record ever high for June and back to cooler than normal for July   all predicted within a few degrees by the Almanac

Not exactly :P   Severe weather changes happen when you get closer to a temperature flip. And when it happens it happens FAST

You recall the Ice Core sample chart I have posted many times

THIS chart is using a different dataset but when you compare the two... they are almost identical

And now even NASA is saying ICE AGE

Early records of sunspots indicate that the Sun went through a period of inactivity in the late 17th century. Very few sunspots were seen on the Sun from about 1645 to 1715 (38 kb JPEG image). Although the observations were not as extensive as in later years, the Sun was in fact well observed during this time and this lack of sunspots is well documented. This period of solar inactivity also corresponds to a climatic period called the "Little Ice Age" when rivers that are normally ice-free froze and snow fields remained year-round at lower altitudes. There is evidence that the Sun has had similar periods of inactivity in the more distant past. The connection between solar activity and terrestrial climate is an area of on-going research.

THE power of the press

http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/theres-a-mad-rush-to-buy-earthquake-survival-kits-in-seattle/ar-AAdnGVQ

There's a Mad Rush to Buy Earthquake Survival Kits in Seattle

And the people felt the ground shaking and saw the water rising. Or at least, they heard the cries of the New Yorker saying so. And when the people knew that the Big One was coming, they trembled with fear. Well, some of them did.

The Biblical tone is appropriate. There really is a 9.0 earthquake/skyscraper-sized tsunami predicted to unmoor coastal life as we know it in the Pacific Northwest—quite possibly within the next 50 years.
Last week the New Yorker trumpeted the story of these apocalyptic truths with terrifying exactness. 13,000 are projected to die, and millions more will be injured or displaced. It will take decades, and an incalculable sum, to recover.

But the article's fear-mongering has also had an activating effect:
People are suddenly buying emergency survival kits in droves. The Seattle Timeswrites of earthquake packages 'flying off shelves':

"Holy cow!" Steve O'Donnell remembers thinking, as he checked the online orders at the Burien headquarters of American Preparedness.

Sales were going through the roof.

If you go on the websites of Costco, Staples or Amazon, you'll see the small, eight-person company's earthquake-preparedness kits for sale.

For $179.99, you can get a 2-person, 7-day kit.

For $139.99, it's a 4-person, 3-day kit.

video at link
Packed with water, meal bars, ponchos, matches, and much more, these kits offer a convenient measure of preparedness, which the region is woefully short on. As the New Yorker article details, the region's states are still lax on building standards and lack much in the way of evacuation training or communication. One Oregon community recently voted down a bond measure that would have paid for a new K-12 campus outside the tsunami inundation zone.

And even though American Preparedness is seeing a sharp rise in sales, the uptick in action isn't universal. The Seattle Times writes:

Only a quarter of Seattleites are putting together an earthquake kit and building a family plan, says Barb Graff, director of emergency management for the city. That's from a just-completed city survey.

And this "boomlet" for survival kits is probably just that—a temporary spark in concern, lit by a viral article. As I recently wrote, psychology tells us that we tend to have trouble getting worked up and mobilized over risks that are far-off and faceless. Certainly, it helps when an influential magazine runs a particularly well-written account of what those risks will look like.

To really sustain and spread an interest in preparedness, however, the Pacific Northwest will need to do more than stock earthquake kits. Government agencies will need to regularly, and thoughtfully, communicate the risks of the earthquake and tsunami to come. Building standards should be amped up and reported to the public. Cities should help subsidize the relatively low costs of securing foundations and bolting water heaters for homeowners and apartment managers.

But there's no doubt that emergency kits are a great place to start. And anyone—whether their city is prone to earthquakes, tornados, hurricanes, or stormy power outages—can prepare their own kits. The Centers for Disease Control,FEMA, and the city of Seattle all have handy tips and checklists. We can hope to never have to use them. Unfortunately, as big natural hazards increase in frequency and severity all over the world, the odds have never been higher.
