Geminid Meteor Shower Peaks This Week: Here's How To Catch Best 'Shooting Stars' Of 2023
TOPLINE The Geminid meteor shower is set to peak this week between Wednesday and Thursday, while a thin crescent moon will create an optimal stargazing opportunity in the night sky, making the Geminids—already one of the most reliable meteor showers of the year—one of the best chances to catch a so-called shooting star this year.
The Geminids have been active since Nov. 19, and will last until Dec. 24, according to NASA, though the space agency projects the peak will start Wednesday night and last through Thursday night.

The best time to watch the meteor shower will be on Dec. 14, when roughly 120 so-called shooting stars will be visible per hour, making the meteor shower one of the most reliable astronomical events of the year.

The meteor shower can be seen around the globe, but appears at its best in the "night and predawn hours," according to NASA, with stargazers observing the shower "well away from the city lights or street lights."

Stargazers will also be able to watch the meteor shower with little distraction from the moon, which on Wednesday and Thursday night will be less than 4% visible, in its waxing crescent phase, keeping the sky relatively dark during the peak hours of the meteor shower, according to the Farmers' Almanac.

SURPRISING FACT
Though they've been referred to for centuries as shooting stars, that term is a misnomer, and the specks of falling debris visible from the Earth are actually "leftover comet particles and bits from asteroids." In the case of the Geminids, those particles are disintegrating pieces of the 3200 Phaethon asteroid, which travels at a super fast speed of 79,000 mph (22 miles per second), according to NASA.

What is the biggest meteor shower in 2023?

The 2023 Geminid meteor shower peaks in the evening of Dec. 14, with meteors also visible on Dec. 13. The Geminids are expected to produce up to 120 meteors per hour at a dark site. The waxing crescent Moon won't interfere with dark skies, making this year's shower good for viewing.

Geminids are known to be bright and fast meteors, often appearing yellowish or white in hue, though they can also be green, red and even blue.

"Most meteors appear to be colorless or white, however the Geminids appear with a greenish hue. They're pretty meteors!" Bill Cooke, lead for the Meteoroid Environment Office at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, said in a blog post earlier this month.

The meteors will appear to stream from the constellation Gemini, which will rise in the northeastern sky.

Yeah, dont disclose unless you are on a SCIF. Or they will come for you. It looks like they even show you guns and threaten your whole family.

Looks like the objective is to shut people up one way or another. >:(
