Does anyone in the Las Vegas area know about Cold Creek....

Its between or not far from  Mount Charleston area and Indian Springs.

As I am led to believe this is a Private Town and only accessible to residents only...

I have not been aware that such places exist....

Just wonder if anyone else knows about similar towns in the USA ?

astr0144

Hi Sky,

Yes, I was able to find somethings on google...

But I was trying to find out if private towns are known about where only residents can enter...As I understand the visiting public cannot enter, even to go to a shop or garage to obtain gas/fuel...

I do not think that I am aware of anywhere that does that...

I was wondering if this is a common thing in the USA or very rare !

Very common in Russia and China... never heard of it here in the US unless the town is A) on a Native Reservation or B) a military restricted area.

There in one 'Town' in Tonopah that is a unit for the Tonopah test area workers

Cold Creek pond

So yeah STAY OUT YA FOREIGNERS  :P  We LIKE it quiet out here :D

astr0144

Now Zorgon !

From what you have said as I understand it....

You did not seem to have been aware of the fact that it is a private town as such....which I am surprised as you live relatively close to it... and I would have thought that it may had been a talking point at some time for the Las Vegas people...Or maybe you did not want the World to know ! :-)

But its not just  Foreign visitors that are locked out... Even L.V residents unless they own one of the homes or are visiting someone their !

So I am not sure if I have educated you on this or not ?  Unless I was mistaken or they have changed it since I was informed about it !

I was wondering if this is something relatively new in the U.S for the Rich or maybe those in power to stay out of the way if something may happen in the near future...

It just seems a bit strange to me and the fact that you were not aware of it in the U.S does suggest that its a bit unusual.

Well there are no gates... real estate agents are selling property there... I see no keep out signs and I can go take pictures of the horses anytime I want so I am not sure what your talking about?

The fact that there are about a hundred videos on youtube of the horses out there should tell you its not closed :P

Its also on the list of popular motorcycle and ATV touring areas

You might be mistaken..

Indian Springs.. were the military has its stuff and the UAV command post is also on Cold Creek ROAD  maybe you are confused?

But even that is not closed :P

QuoteVisitors to Indian Springs will see trailers from an era gone by, including the "Atomic View Trailer Court". Some of the same people who lived in Indian Springs during the 1950s still live there today.

There is also Cold Creek Spring on the Nevada test site... contaminated from all the nuke tests :P

astr0144

Hmmm !

Well I know that you can drive up to it ok...and there are entrances....

But there were warning signs saying residents only. There is also a large post box on the road side...residents have to obtain their posts from the road as I understand...I did see a video somewhere that had a photo of it.
( I will try to find it later )

Have you ever been up that area or around Mount Charleston ?

The Road to Cold Creek as far as I know takes you to a track to Mount Sterling...which if you have the energy to hike takes you to a view of the NTS / Nellis range...and I believe that it is the only place where you can see Papoose Lake if it is clear enough...

astr0144

You can see a photo of the Post box on one of the links that Sky Posted..

Photo Number 8 .......  3rd row down...

Also on your reply number 4 ... the first video that you posted for Cold Creek.
you can see the post box at 2 mins 24 secs...There is a Notice Board behind it and if I recall, there is information on that Board...( But unfortunately we cannot see it close enough to read)

There does not seem to be anything anywhere that I have looked at so far that says that its a Private town...

I will try and do some further research to find out for sure...

The Only thing that I have been able to find is some comments made on a hunting website...where Cold Creek refers to private property and what they think of outsiders !

-------------------------------------

What are you hunting for? I've bird hunted in there a few times, but nothing else. I can tell you be very respectful of the private property. Residents of Cold Creek do not like outsiders very much. (Assuming it's the Cold Creek an hour out of Vegas. In this state, there's probably more than one. I think we have ten or more Pine and Cherry Creeks here.)

LOL that is the same attitude in every small town in the USA... try walking around the back hills of Tenessee and Kentucky :P

People live in small towns to avoid the city folk... and they have shotguns to make that point

QuoteResidents of Cold Creek do not like outsiders very much.

Yup  Goodsprings the old mining town is the same... you drive into town and they all stare at you. If your dresses for rock hunting and drive an old truck, it just takes a few minutes to get accepted :D  And then you get to chat with the old miners :D

Respect private property... well yeah what's wrong with that?

Mt Charleston is a beautiful wilderness in the middle of a desert. Vegas is full of illegal Mexicans that swarm the hill on weekends and leave trash and destruction wherever they go. No respect at all. Unfortunately your not allowed to shoot them :P

Number ONE rule of hunters, hikers and rock hunters  If its posted private property STAY OUT or ask the owner for permission. I have gotten into active working mines by simply getting permission in writing. Its not that hard

Quotehttp://www.biggamehunt.net/forum/cold-creek-nevada-hunting-tips

Seeing as that is a hunting site.. makes sense that they would tell people to be respectful Also 90% of the area is protected BLM land for the wild horses, burros and Desert Tortoise. John lost his mine to the Desert Tortoise. They made 250,000 acres into a wildlife management area and his mine was the last active one in the area

Nice place but you need an ATV to get in there :D

Some religion based towns are pretty reclusive, but I don't know if they actually post warning signs.  Then there are the muti-million dollar mcmansion areas where some of the people seem to think their stuff doesn't stink.  Then there's the rest of us.  One paw in front of the other, try not to trip over the lint on the carpet, pay a cover charge to walk into the grocery store, etc.

you will also see a lot of signs like this in the area

Nice picture of the wild mustangs :D You can adopt one for $300 when they cull the herd

Gold Butte area has some nice signs :P but most of them have bullet holes  :o

Dang thing is now that they made is a preserve, they advertise it to tourists so they will do more damage than the hunters and miners did :P

There is only one narrow paved road in and out, like most small towns out west here. Its in that first video

QuoteThere is also a large post box on the road side...residents have to obtain their posts from the road as I understand...I did see a video somewhere that had a photo of it.
( I will try to find it later )
Its in that first video too :P as you enter the town ;)

As to mail boxes small towns have had those for years, used to look like this (without locks)

Now the have locks and look like this.

Many housing communities here and in Canada use those now. Door to door mail delivery is dying out

QuoteBut there were warning signs saying residents only.

Okay I think I know what you are getting at. Up on Mt Charleston there is very little space. The few houses that are up there have private streets owned and maintained by the residents. There are those signs to keep the tourists out of the purely residential areas. They get thousands of tourists up there both for skiing in the winter and hiking and hunting in the summer

yeah there are private homes up there prime realestate  a small cabin will cost $450.000. Its at 8,000 fet and they get snow. It beautiful up there and only 35min drive from my house in the middle of Las Vegas to the summit

The signs are there to let tourists know its residential.. but no one stops you from driving down the very narrow roads for pictures. There are no stores except the Lodge, which has a restaurant and is open to the public

Here are some properties for sale. But with a single road in and out clogged with tourists year round I wouldn't want to live up there :D  But its a nice escape from the heat in summer.

not much to see on Papoose Lake :D and you can take a DOE blue bus right to the Test Center, Groom lake/Area 51 is a very small section of the Nellis Range

On this map you can get your bearings Mt Charleston is the brown mountains south of Indiand Springs on that map. Click for full sizw.
