Good rant. :)

I like the inclusion of some Radiohead.  I have watched Radiohead live several times in the 1990s.  Reminds me of Jane's Addiction a bit.

"urbana legio omnia vincit"

Does that mean "The Legions of the backward conquers all?"

First of all.... I really appreciate your participation Pimander. It means a lot to me. :)

"urbana legio omnia vincit" means...

Urban Legion conquers all (wins everything)

This is the song "perfection" of Legião urbana (Urban Legion) band from year 1993, and is the 4th track from the album "The discovery of Brazil."

This song is a criticism of Brazil, but by metaphors. Even the song's name is already contradictory. What they say is that "perfection" is actually a full imperfection. And this is precisely the idea. Causing the impact of people and make them reflect a little.

If it were placed a name that literally meanedwhat the content of the son is about, it would be common and not cause much impact, but a contradiction strikes people more. Because people do not like to be contradicted.

A phrase that is constantly repeated is "let's celebrate." He says we should celebrate all the atrocities that happen in Brazil. And every paragraph that passes, we become more horrified at the absurdities that we are placed.

None of this is to be celebrated, but the truth is we do it more often than we would admit.

We know that there are people who need help, we know we have people dying in hospitals. Everyone gets sad, gets moved. After all we do have feelings. But when the carnival(soccer, or the next drama on tv... you name it) arrives, everyone simply erases it from memory and go celebrate.

Not that it's wrong people celebrate, but the hypocrisy lies in the people's complaining  something of which they do nothing to change, at all.

To sum this up, this is a critical metaphorical song made to Brazilian society who witnesses the atrocities of the system, but remains indifferent to everything around them!

What we see in those words from 20 years ago... We see even worst today. :(

Ps... Thats not Radiohead  ;)... Its Nirvana. (from the song Lithium)

I don't know why I though Urbana was "backwards" LOL.  I'm not great at Latin languages although I know many of the words from science - and lets face it, ubana obviously means urban. Doh! ::)

Oh yes, Nevermind is another 90s classic album (my era I suppose even though I love 70s music).  I thought of the record "Creep" when I heard that part of the song....

Let's celebrate
The human stupidity
The stupidity of all nations
My country and its coterie
Of killers
Cowards, rapists
And thieves...

Let's celebrate
The stupidity of the people
Our police and television
Let's celebrate our government
And our state that isn't a nation...

Celebrating the youth without schools
The dead children
Celebrating our disunity...

Let's celebrate Eros and Thanatos
Persephone and Hades
Let's celebrate our sorrow
Let's celebrate our vanity...

Let's celebrate like idiots
Every February and holiday
All the death on the road
Death for the lack
Of hospitals...

Let's celebrate our justice
The greed and defamation
Let's celebrate the prejudices
The vote of the illiterate
Celebrating the rotten water
And all the taxes
Fires, lies
And kidnappings...

Our castle
Of marked cards
The Slave labor
Our small universe
All the hypocrisy
And all affectation
Every robbery and indifference
Let's celebrate epidemics
It's the party of champions...

Let's celebrate the hunger
Having no one to hear
Having no one to love
Let's feed what is evil
Let's hurt the heart...

Let's celebrate our flag
Our past
Of glorious absurdities
All that is free and ugly
All that is normal
Let's sing together
The national anthem
The tear is true
Let's celebrate our nostalgia
Celebrating our loneliness...

Let's celebrate the envy
The intolerance
The misunderstanding
Let's celebrate the violence
And forget our people
That worked honestly
Their whole life
And now they have no more
Rights to anything...

Let's celebrate the aberration
Of our whole lack
Of common sense
Our disregard for education
Let's celebrate the horror
From all this
With party, funeral and casket
It's all dead and buried now
Since we can also celebrate
The stupidity of those who sang
This song...
"Battle not with monsters, lest ye become a monster, and if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you."

The song fits the USA, in my opinion.  I mailed my ballot yesterday.   Whatever the outcome, I at least attempted to have a voice.  Meow.
