I saw this video the other day and thought it interesting. You can view the video here:

http://video.foxnews.com/v/2094968009001/nasa-grail-twins-lunar-orbit-photos?intcmp=related?playlist_id=1821663211001

I started watching it and something caught my eye so I did some screen captures to take a better look.
Now the tiff's aren't the highest resolution but it was better than I thought. I noticed that the forward looking camera started out fairly sharp but as the moon scape passed from forward looking to rear looking I noticed that the images were blurry in spots. Almost a smudged apperance or maybe a dusty looking scape. Maybe it's just the poor resolution but there is a noticeable difference.

not too bad

still fairly clear

Now is this just video effects and I'm seeing what's to be expected from a snapshot or is there something else there?

Just thought I'd put this out there and get some feedback.

Greetings and Happy Birthday:

We noticed the blurred spaces but thought (almost) nothing of it - until your BRILLIANT observation.

Elementary my Dear Sergeant...  it's

FOG

Just like on Mars :D

Sgt.Rocknroll

Fog, dust or whatever. Just wanted to know if it was just me with my tri-focles or there is something actually there. Lol

I think it looks like lack of contrast, it's visible everywhere but more noticeable in larger areas.

Sgt.Rocknroll

That's a possibility that I considered. But wasn't real sure. It's just that areas in the same frame look different.

Well, to me, something about these pics don't look right. On the pics Sgt. has noted, some of the shadows (black) do not look real to me. In some of the places, as much bright-white is there, such probably wouldn't allow for shadows anyway. But, even so, the shadows are there, and some of them even seem to curve around to a different direction, and still remain black.

Yes, the "blurry" areas are there, and one of the biggest white blurry areas has a big black shadow wall on the facing side. Don't think anything that white would be totally shadowed. Some surface features can be seen under the blurry.

To me, it looks "more right" in a negative screen, but still no explanation for the blurry parts.

Yep, too little contrast does that, as it removes the subtle shades that give us the perception of shapes.

Now, what do you think? :)

What do I think?

I think ArMaP has trouble with the word FOG :P

I seem to recall another 'green fog' image back from Spooksville days :D

Sgt.Rocknroll

ArMap this is your photo with my hi-lighted area 'FOG'..LOL

No problems with fog that looks like fog. :)

You always had problems with colour.  ;)

It was only green because it was only visible on the image used for the green channel when composing the image to RGB from the three greyscale originals, and it looked just like another dust devil, not fog.

Fog?  ???

How can it be fog if we can see what's beneath it? Why does that "fog" appears only on the slopes facing the light?

In the image below that area is closer to the camera, and I can see no fog.

Sgt.Rocknroll

Fog rolls, it moves, fog can be thick. Have you ever driven in fog?..We had some really bad fog here in south Louisiana recently and you couldn't see 10 feet in front of you. Btw I'm not saying it's fog, I'm just saying it looked blurry and smudged. You're probably right in your assestment though.

No, I don't drive. :)

But I am accustomed to fog, as I live near the ocean and a river, near an area that is famous for the fog.
