Only time will tell, relative to the circumstance, for the reason of the Pope's resignation. But who gets selected as the next Pope, could possibly be more interesting, because of the "prophecies of Malachy". Saint Malachy was a 12th century Bishop that apparently wrote prophetically about the last the Popes, to the end.

I guess we can "watch and listen", to see how all of this plays out!  ;)

Pope Francis I: Argentina's Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio is new Catholic leader

By Alastair Jamieson and Ian Johnston, NBC News
VATICAN CITY - Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires was named leader of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics on Wednesday after being elected pope. He will be known as Pope Francis I.

The 76-year-old - the first Jesuit, the first South American and the first non-European pope of the modern era - was introduced to the world from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica in front of tens of thousands gathered in the square below.

In Italian, he joked with the rain-soaked crowd before delivering his blessing, saying: "As you know the duty of the conclave is to give Rome a bishop. It seems that my brother cardinals went almost to the end of the world."

These guys have linked the new pope to "baby trafficking" and kidnapping. He looks like he's a real go getter.

A Jesuit finally has the job.  Hmmmm

What does this mean to our esteemed membership?

This pope is taking his name from Francis of Assisi

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_of_Assisi

Now Francis of Assisi 's real name was.....Francesco di Pietro di Bernardone

Or Peter.

Any thoughts?

This is the only connection I can make to fulfill the Petrus Romanus prophecy.

Now I agree that the Black Pope and being the first Jesuit elected is in line.  The Jesuits ran the place anyways.  Now they have one of their own in there.

I don't actually know much about the Jesuits; although from the few hints I'd managed to pick up here and on ATS, I'd more or less gathered that they were supposedly right between Satan and the National Security Agency on the morality scale.  Is that about the perception that the average tinfoiler has of them? ;)

It's slim.  Benedict's link was a lot clearer, IMHO.  "From the Glory of the Olive."  Apparently olives were the symbol of the Benedictine Order.  Hence, olive = Benedict = second last pope according to Malachy.

Mind you, I think we can expect pundits to go to ridiculous lengths to trace the current pope to Petrus Romanus in the coming days.  It's also got a bit more difficult at this point for me to think that Catholicism is really done for just yet, with the new pope drawing the crowd he did.  The Vatican evidently still means a lot to quite a large number of people.  I think I'd need to see that crowd thin out a bit more, before I start thinking for sure that we've got the last pontiff on our hands.

Apparently this just came to light three days ago, in somewhat related news.

This is why I think the people who were after Ratzinger's head over the child sex abuse issue, to a partial degree at least, are hypocrites.  Most of them are formally self-identifying atheists, and are also supportive of homosexuality.  These people will criticise the Vatican for being supposedly anti-gay on the one hand, yet want the abolition of the institution for male priests having sex with boys on the other.  Some of you might remember the North American Man Boy Love Association, which at one point was part of the gay movement.

I haven't seen a great deal of evidence that the average tin foil hat wearer knows much at all about "The Society of Jesus."

I'm tempted to do some work on it but part of me thinks perhaps it's best left alone for now....

Well I have done some research on them.  Let's call them the vatican's mafia branch.

They are sneaky folk that like to mix truth with deception to get their ways.

Here is a link to a book that is really worth the read if you are interested in the subject.
