Chase Bank site attacked, suffers intermittent outage

QuoteThe website of Chase Bank was inaccessible on Tuesday because of a denial-of-service attack. The initial service interruption to Chase.com lasted about 90 minutes, from about 5 to 6:30 p.m. ET.

When the site did load intermittently during that time, it displayed a warning that the website was unavailable and users should try again later.

Chase confirmed that the outage was due to a denial-of-service attack, in which attackers bombard websites with an overwhelming amount of traffic, overloading their servers and causing sluggish performance or a complete loss of service.

The hacking group taking responsibility, which calls itself al-Qassam Cyber Fighters, announced its intentions to hack a number of banks in this manner several months ago, and has targeted Bank of America, Citibank, Capitol One, and others. The group cites what it sees as U.S. refusal to remove a YouTube video grossly offensive to those who practice Islam.

The video in question is "Innocence of Muslims," a film trailer depicting the prophet Muhammad as, among other things, a murderer and pedophile. Muslim states such as Egypt and Yemen have called for the video to be removed, but Google-owned YouTube has said the video is well within its guidelines. Although Hillary Clinton, former Secretary of State, described the video as "disgusting and reprehensible," she supported the decision, as representative of the U.S.'s commitment to its citizens' right to free expression.

Al-Qassam Cyber Fighters have pledged to discontinue their attacks if the video is removed, or if the conditions of a complicated formula are met regarding the video's like and dislike counts.

UPDATE: Following the publication of this article, Chase.com manifested continued outages, appearing more often for some than others. As of this writing, the site is not loading at all, and while the site was up, banking services were not yet restored.

UPDATE 2: Chase.com is back to full functionality. The bank apologized on Twitter for the "rough day."

Bank website attacks reach new high: 249 hours offline in past six weeks

The chart above shows the availability of major U.S. bank websites during the past year. Data points below the top indicated less than 100 percent availability. Descending fever lines indicate severe outages; many are blamed on denial of service attacks.

QuoteBy Bob Sullivan, Columnist, NBC News

Major U.S. bank websites have been offline a total of 249 hours in the past six weeks, perhaps the clearest indication yet that American companies are prime targets in an unrelenting, global cyber conflict. The heavier-than-usual outages are the result of a remarkable, sustained attack that began seven months ago and repeatedly knocks banks offline for hours at a time, frustrating consumers and bank security professionals alike.

"Literally, these banks are just in war rooms, sitting at controls trying to stop (the attacks)," said Avivah Litan, a bank security analyst with Gartner Group, a consulting firm. "The frightening thing is (the attackers) are not using as much resources as they have on call. The attacks could be bigger."

The denial of service reports were hardly noteworthy at first, hidden in the wake of news that U.S. embassies were under siege during the week of September 11, 2012. But in short order, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, PNC and a number of other banks suffered hours-long website outages. A group calling itself Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Cyber Fighters released an anonymous statement saying it was attacking banks in sympathy with real-world protestors who were reacting to an anti-Islam film that had been posted online.

Seven months later, the group is still taunting the U.S. financial system, with notice almost daily from another bank that had to apologize for letting down its customers. American Express and Wells Fargo issued statements last week saying they suffered outages. Even with advance notice, the biggest financial institutions in the world can't seem to stop them.

No one interviewed for this story believes that a perceived insult over a Web movie is the attackers' motivation, as the al Qassam messaging has stated. Though some considered that it might be the work of attention-seeking teen-aged hackers, they would likely have grown bored, or run out of resources, long ago.

In the fall, national security officials speaking on background told several media outlets, including NBC News, that they suspected the Iranian government was behind the attacks. It seems certain that an organized group, with both a political motive and the ability to fund the operation, is to blame.

Seems NBC thinks it is Iran doing this, though Anonymous was considered. If it IS Anon, they might give Obama an excuse to start war   :o

Dutch bank ING online customers find wrong account balance

Quote

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Dutch bank ING was inundated with complaints from retail and business customers in the Netherlands on Wednesday because their online accounts showed incorrect balances.

ING said the payment processing problem, which a spokeswoman said had been corrected late on Wednesday evening, had meant that balances online appeared incorrect even though the actual balances in the accounts were not affected. It said the problem was not caused by computer hacking.

From Admin at GLP

Ghetto Monk, you think it's one person or one person and a few friends... Attacking all these websites?
What makes you think that?
And people, do you believe it?
I don't.
Don't let divide and conquer tactics effect you here, too.

I will link you to an audio recording of a call he made to phenomenon (GLP Voice Chat Admin)

a couple weeks later he called the local police near her and told them he was holding her hostage at her house and was going to kill her if he didn't get a helicopter and 10 million dollars or something...

thus causing the local swatt teams from 3 different departments to respond to her house

in the audio recording I'll link you he admits to a plan to "take down all conspiracy sites - not just GLP" and to hacking and Denial of Service Attacks..

Right click and save as.. it seems to get cut off early if you try to stream it in your browser...

What money? :P  I am barely squeaking by month to month. But we did 'bank' a lot of food and supplies :D  Not so much for disaster readiness, but because it's cheaper to buy when the sales hit and stock the pantry and freezers.

Every Holiday the stores put out the specials  like Corn Beef on St Patty's day, Ham on Easter, Hot Dogs on July 4th  etc... and the day after the holiday you get all the holiday marked goods at 50% off or less :D My daughter learned that trick really well :D

But back to the hacking... looks like ATS is STILL DOWN as of 2 minutes ago.... I bet the members are going into shock and withdrawal symptoms  by now and staff will be getting bald :P

Okay Update from GLP  seems that Skeptic Overlord  is posting on GLP as TheSkepticGuy

I just had a quick look at THAT forum and strangely enough there are no threads about them being offline for 20+ hours AT ALL...

There's also one in a forum viewable by members only.
And we were "hard down" for only about 2 hours. DNS issues remain for some regions/ISPs.

What is REALLY FUNNY here is that Bill is posting on GLP but GLP blocks any link to ATS and ATS blocks any link to GLP yet here is Bill conversing with the admin of GLP

you don't seem to get it bill
it's not just people not getting the DNS switch over to your anti-DDOS proxy
it's the method of filtering syn ack attacks that causes the traffic loss
even the highest dollar anti-ddos company cannot allow 100% of the legit traffic through while they are scrubbing a DDOS attack
believe me I know
I've been forced to get up to speed on this 'scene' over the last month

TheSkepticGuy
It's not as complex as you imply. We made DNS changes and the TTL was high.
Also, today's attack wasn't as you suggest.
Indeed it sucks that this is now the cost-of-business for supporting free expression.

As long as you're switched over to your anit-ddos scrubbing proxy you're going to have 'connection issues'..
shit man they instantly blackhole 26 million IP's the second you switch over..
I know who you're using now and checked into them - total rip off for a shittier service than you can get elsewhere for 1/3 the price
their method of forcing you to do a DNS update when YOU see the attack happen and then forcing you to remove your DNS from their scrubber proxy 24 hours after an attack ends is a friging JOKE
too bad they probably locked you into a year contract when you signed up
there is a REASON they do that Bill..
lol

Just To Give You Guys An Idea of The DDOS Attacks GLP Has Been Undergoing Lately...

QuoteGhetto MonkModerator

I know at least 1/4 of you are still experiencing connection problems when trying to access GLP while it's under DDOS attack filtering.

To me these are NOT acceptable levels of connectivity while the site is under attack.

I've decide the current DDOS mitigation company just isn't going to be able to handle this and am going to move us over to a better company over the next few days..

Please rest assured we're aware of the issue and are taking steps to "mitigate" it..

Here are the last 2 weeks of attacks on this website..
