As another brief interruption, to the continual barrage of doom porn that has apparently become standard around here, I offer this story from Truthout.  It's about the rise of community gardens, and the desire of people to begin interdependently feeding each other with fresh, organic, local fruit and vegetables.

One point from the article:-

* Educational gardening projects give children and teens the opportunity to get their hands dirty and learn about growing food. In East Oakland, California, youth with Oakland Food Connection grew over 3,000 pounds of produce in school-based gardens in one year. Now they're branching out to create value-added products, like sauerkraut and jelly, and to run a catering business. On the other side of the country, in Orange, Massachusetts, Seeds of Solidarity works with rural and working-class youth to tend gardens at schools, a homeless shelter, and an elder care facility.

In closing, I'd like to apologise to anyone who experienced disruption to their more normal emotional state of apocalyptic hysteria, as a result of this post.  You may now return to crying in a foetal position on the floor, over the imminent, impending end of the world.
