working out in the pumpkin patch no time to downlown pics right now..but go outside and see if you can see it

So what is it?

Also known as a 22 degree halo or a sun halo, the ring is caused by sunlight passing through ice crystals in cirrus clouds within the Earth's atmosphere, the University of Illinois' Weather World Project 2010 explains. (See WW2010's website for diagrams that illustrate how it works.)

The crystals bend direct sunlight, projecting it elsewhere into the sky, and at a certain angle -- you guessed it, 22 degrees -- a halo can be seen around the sun.

QuoteALL QUIET ALERT: With the Sun's disk almost completely devoid of sunspots, solar flare activity has come to a halt. Measurements by NOAA's GOES 15 satellite show that the sun's global x-ray emission, a key metric of solar activity, has flatlined:

The GOES X-ray Flux plot contains 5 minute averages of solar X-ray output in the 1-8 Angstrom (0.1-0.8 nm) and 0.5-4.0 Angstrom (0.05-0.4 nm) passbands. Data from the SWPC Primary and Secondary GOES X-ray satellites are shown. Some data dropouts from the Primary satellite will occur during satellite eclipses.

Other plots of interest: A black background version of this plot; GOES 1-min X-rays; SWPC Real-time Monitors.

SWPC X-ray alerts are issued at the M5 (5x10E-5 Watts/m2) and X1 (1x10E-4 Watts/m2) levels, based upon 1-minute data. Large X-ray bursts cause short wave fades for HF propagation paths through the sunlit hemisphere. Some large flares are accompanied by strong solar radio bursts that may interfere with satellite downlinks.

This page updates dynamically every 5 minutes.

QuoteThe quiet is unlikely to break this weekend. NOAA forecasters estimate a scant 1% chance of M- or X-class solar flares during the next 24-48 hours.

The quiet spell is a bit strange because 2013 is supposed to be a year of solar maximum, with lots of flares and sunspots. Supporting this view are data from NASA-supported observatories which show that the sun's magnetic field is poised to flip--a long-held sign that Solar Max has arrived. Nevertheless, solar activity is low.

One possible explanation is that Solar Max is double-peaked and we are in the valley between peaks. If so, solar activity could surge again in late 2013-2014. No one can say for sure, though. Researchers have been studying sunspots for more than 400 years, and we still cannot predict the behavior of the solar cycle. Continued quiet or stormy space weather? Both are possible in the weeks and months ahead.

All Updated Information and terms found here.

May explain what and why these are so visible as o fright now, given light refraction is low, it would cause the Ice crystals to be more Reflectively visible to the naked eye.

Hope this helps Sky. ;)

Where I come from we call these Sun-Dog's, very prevalent in the winter months as shown in each of your images.

Not so much a Sun Halo as Sky was pointing out, but have to admit, some really strange seasonal weather going on, Mexico, China, And new discoveries finally being released about t eh USA Midwest and it's ancient past dealing with Earth's tectonic movement's with in the USA......."Coincidence or Preparedness?" ???  ::)

Either way, Cool WINTER PICTURE'S!!

The DOGS are the big bright lumps on the Halo :D

Picky Picky :P

They are usually only visible locally though.

And usually associate with very cold weather  Maybe an eqrly super winter prelude to the next ice age?

::)

Z those are sundogs.. I have a few shots of them..all due to chem trails ...
this circle was something I haven't seen here before.. but again due to chem trails

took 83 shots and narrowed it down to these..
started early this morning the new and different chem trails were cluttering up the sky

7:20 am dst...looking west

7:22

8:17

10:39 (both shots)
we were out in the garden when I looked up and ran back in for the camera and stood behind hubby and used his hand..I was afraid to shot directly into the sun

now I have always said what don't they want us to see..and I didn't see these spots with my eyes
only after looking at the computer screen  and  since i can't size them on here they appear smaller than when i see them on my screen...where they are very visible
interesting, huh?

look at the circle around 11 o clock area and this would be more south west
and maybe thre dots  going from 10 to 11 on the circle.. but the last one is the most visible

10:40

i was trying to use trees to hide the direct sun and get the rainbow circle
without blinding myself
so i was all over the place
but facing west  or nw the entire time

10:45

10:46

Sky,

Awsome pics! Wow, those "contrails" sure did spread,
into a whole sky of new "clouds".

Curious, did you happen to observe any of the aircraft?

well that purple dot  (around 5 oclock in the pic...blows up and keeps it's shape) in the 10:45 shot had me looking at what's in the sky but nothing really fits
if you click on the pic it does enlarge a bit

BTS..no didn't see the aircraft this morning

Shasta56

I tried looking for the sun halo.  All I could see was the cloud cover.   A year's worth of rain in less than a week.

I remember reading about the three suns appearing in the sky that the House of York took to mean the three sons of York.  Those have been explained as being sun dogs.

Lots of aerial activity around here lately.  Helicopters heading out from Buckley to help with damage control.

Sky, thanks for the response,
interesting all the more.

Just for the record, I say "contrails" tongue in cheek with
a smile to all the "debunkers" who dont think
they are "chemtrailing" anything, ever.

Imo, very obvious they are up to something
right over your yonder.  8)

This one?

It looks like lens flare.
