US Navy Yard shooting: 12 dead, several wounded and buildings locked down in Washington DC

One of the shooters was killed while attacking the historic Washington Navy Yard, but police say they are searching for potentially another gunmen wearing a military uniform after a third man was discounted as a suspect.

Three federal law enforcement sources have tentatively identified the dead gunman as 34-year-old Aaron Alexis, a one-time Texas resident and military officer, Reuters news agency reported.

"We are confirming 12 fatalities. We had a few additional victims who were injured. They were not fatally injured," city police chief Cathy Lanier said.

Ms Lanier said the potential suspect who remains at large had been reported by witnesses to be armed.

"And we don't know if they are military employees and these are people that we really believe are involved in some way and we are trying to locate those individuals," she said of the shooters.

"We have no indication of motive at this time."

The Washington Naval Yard is a short distance from the Capitol building, home of the US Congress, in central Washington on the banks of the Anacostia River.

The US Senate cancelled its Monday session and its adjacent office buildings on the Capitol grounds have been locked down.

"We do not have any information to suggest the Senate, its members, or staff are in any danger, but out of an abundance of caution, we feel this is the best course of action to keep everyone safe," sergeant at arms Terrance Gainer said.

He said the decision to lock down Senate buildings was made because of the "possibility of suspects remaining at large".

As it turns out, she's not even on the base. She was at my nieces' school.

She's at Bolling, which is next door (and arguably part of) the Navy Yard. She runs in the Navy Yard every morning.

When I saw that first mention go by, I totally lost my shit right there at the Dodge dealership.

This case more than odd....

and the suspect had helped with rescue work
