The whole place is oozing with Knightly/Masonic/Rosicrucian symbols.
The Order of Christ was just a different name given to the Knights Templar in Portugal, where they weren't persecuted. That cross was on the sails of the ships that made the first exploring of the coasts of Africa and latter reached India and Japan and found Brazil, that's why it's common to see it associated with the armillary sphere.

My sister (the same that may have visited Quinta da Regaleira) went to the Convent of Christ (the headquarters of the Order of Christ) two or three times, she knows the responsible for the conservation of the convent (I think).

Carvalho Monteiro had the same architect who built the Palácio da Regaleira, Luigi Manini, build his tomb in the Cemitério dos Prazeres.
I was born in Lisbon, some 300 metres from that cemetery. :)

Here's a photo of his family tomb.

I somehow lost a post. ???

My sister did went to Quinta da Regaleira once, and she said that she had a deja-vu when she got out of the cave from the iniciatic well, and she thought that she had once been there when she was a child (which is not possible, since they opened it to the public just some years ago and she is one year older than me) and that they had swans in the lake. :)

She also said that, according to some people, the well already existed when Monteiro bought it (the oldest reference to that estate is from the 1600s) and it may have been used in some rituals, as Sintra was the most important centre (as far as is known today) of some religious cults, some of them (like the worshipping of the Sun, the Moon and Saturn) since before the Roman invasions.

Here's a virtual tour of Quinta da Regaleira. :)

And, just to finish, the watch, the most complex watch ever made until 1989, when Patek Philippe made a watch to celebrate the 150th anniversary.

The other European country where the Templars were not persecuted was Scotland.  The Scottish nobleman were not afraid of the Pope or the French and housed many of the Templar Knights when they fled France.

Rosslyn Chapel was built by them, allegedly the dimensions are an exact copy of the original Jerusalem Temple.  Another rumour is that the Templar's treasure was hidden in the vault beneath Rosslyn.

Below is a laser scan of the Temple where the vault can be seen.  The vault was "unknown" until more recently.

Here are some Templar graves in Scotland which prove they were there.

Below is the grave of William de Saint Caire.  The St Claire family are now known as the Sinclair family.  They owned the Rosslyn site and likely built it.

QuoteThis is the grave of William de St. Clair, the Knight Templar who was killed in Spain while trying to carry Robert the Bruce's embalmed heart to the Holy Land in 1330.

This pink stone marking the knight's grave was originally situated by an earlier church which stood just below Rosslyn Chapel. It is now in the North Aisle of Rosslyn Chapel.

On the top is the floriated cross, a symbol of the Knights Templars, which forms a chalice or grail. There is also a carving on the top of a "west Highland" type sword, and the name "Willhm de Sinncler" is carved on top as well.

That's the biggest difference between what happened in the two countries, in Portugal they weren't refugees, they kept all their possessions, they just changed their name.

There were some already in Scotland who kept their lands.  The refugees were from France obviously.  Don't forget, the Sinclair family still own some of their former estates.

Were they established in the country as they were in Portugal, with at least one fortress and convent? The Knights Templar, after renamed to Order of Christ, remained in Portugal until the end of the religious orders with the end of the monarchy, although it still exists, at least in name.

Order of Christ
I think they had two preceptories in Scotland back then so they must have been established in some way, yes.   They were not as established as in Portugal though.  Many of them moved to Scotland to avoid the persecution and are rumoured to have helped (disputed by some historians) the Scottish to defeat the English at The Battle of Bannockburn.
