Looking  :D

The Inverted Tower, Sintra, Portugal.

The "Initiation Well" or "Initiatic Well" (sometimes referred to as the "Inverted Tower") is a 27 meter staircase that leads straight down underground and connects with other tunnels via underground walkways. A similar structure is the Pozzo di S. Patrizio in Italy.

Quinta da Regaleira

Quinta da Regaleira is an estate located near the historic center of Sintra, Portugal. It is classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO within the "Cultural Landscape of Sintra". Along with other palaces in this area (such as the Pena, Monserrate and Seteais palaces), it is one of the principal tourist attractions of Sintra. It consists of a romantic palace and chapel, and a luxurious park featuring lakes, grottoes, wells, benches, fountains, and a vast array of exquisite constructions. The palace is also known as "Palace of Monteiro the Millionaire", from the nickname of its first owner, António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro.

António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro (1848 – 1920), also known as Monteiro dos Milhões (Monteiro the Millionaire), was born to Portuguese parents in Rio de Janeiro. He inherited a huge family fortune, which he enlarged in Brazil by selling coffee and precious stones, which soon made it possible for him to leave for Portugal. He received a degree in Law from the University of Coimbra, and was a well-known collector and bibliophile, with a superb collection of the works of Camões. His cultural interests certainly influenced and guided the mysterious symbols and iconography of the palace that he had built on his estate nestled in the mountains of Sintra, the Palácio da Regaleira.

Carvalho Monteiro was represented in the press of his time as both an altruist and an eccentric, exemplified by his famous Leroy 01, "the most complicated clock in the world."

Carvalho Monteiro had the same architect who built the Palácio da Regaleira, Luigi Manini, build his tomb in the Cemitério dos Prazeres. The door of the tomb, also encrusted with symbolism, was opened with the same key that opened the Palácio da Regaleira and his palace in Lisbon, on the Rua do Alecrim. As visitors enter the cemetery grove, they encounter the tomb on the left, with the orientation, size, and shape of a Masonic temple, oriented towards the east. It is covered in various symbols. The door knocker is engraved with a bee carrying a skull. The bee, which is diligent and hard-working, represents the Mason in his organized work. The gradeamento which can be seen in the back of the tomb, is festooned with the symbolic wine and bread, the spirit and the body. There are also decorative owls, symbolizing wisdom, as well as poppies, the symbol of eternal sleep.

Camões lived a semi-privileged life and was educated by Dominicans and Jesuits. For a period, due to his familial relations he attended the University of Coimbra, although records do not show him registered (he participated in courses in the Humanities). His uncle, Bento de Camões, is credited with this education, owing to his position as Prior at the Monastery of Santa Cruz and Chancellor at the University of Coimbra. He frequently had access to exclusive literature, including classical Greek, Roman and Latin works, read Latin, Italian and wrote in Spanish.[citation needed]

Sintra lies in the splendid coastal landscape of western Portugal just north of Lisbon. Numerous kings and other aristocrats built their summer retreats in this miniature paradise. In the 19th century Sintra became the first centre of European Romantic architecture.
Quinta da Regaleira is an impressive inheritance situated in the old part of Sintra. The country estate is surrounded by gardens and forests and bears the mythical and magical marks of the former owner Antonio Augusto Carvalho Monteiro.
We decide to enter the spiritual domain by climbing the stepping stones. The cave symbolises rebirth, at the end of the birth canal shines the eternal light. Monteiro and his architect Luigi Manini maintained the same philosophy of life. The imagination of the two men created various artistic expressions.
After the trip through the nine-floored cave, the visitor can receive another reward seeing other works of art and the delightful nature of the country estate.
But first we go through the hidden door in the rock, taking the final threshold to the Christian world. Other visitors take the trip in opposite direction, choosing the pagan way, which is quite a different story.
Themes of mystical life are represented in all sorts of ways. The Portuguese myths and esoteric traditions found fertile ground at the Quinta.
