A new study of the effects of radioactive fallout from Fukushima on the health of babies born in California shows a significant excess of hypothyroidism caused by the radiation travelling 5,000 miles across the Pacific. The article will be published next week in the Open Journal of Pediatrics.

Fukushima Radiation Damages Thyroid Glands Of California Babies | Collective-Evolution

16 December 2013

A study published in the peer-reviewed Open Journal of Pediatrics has found that radioactive Iodine from Fukushima has caused a significant increase in hypothyroidism among babies in California.(1)

Even though Japan is 5000 miles across the Pacific Ocean, the study found that elevated airborne beta levels on the West Coast are directly correlated with this common trend among newborn babies after the Fukushima nuclear meltdown.

Congenital hypothyroidism is rare, but serious. It normally affects one child in every 2000, which can now be expected to rise. All babies born in California are monitored at birth for Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) levels in blood, since high levels indicate hypothyroidism.

Using data obtained from the State of California over the period of the Fukushima explosions, researchers examined congenital hypothyroidism (CH) in newborns and compared data for babies exposed to radioactive Iodine-131 and born between March 17th and Dec 31st 2011 with unexposed babies born in 2011 before the exposures as well as those born in 2012.

Confirmed cases of hypothyroidism increased by 21% in the group of babies that were exposed to excess radioactive iodine in the womb.

44.2 percent of 94.975 sampled Fukushima children have had thyroid ultrasound abnormalities as a likely results of their exposure to radiation.(2)(3)

Although less than three years have elapsed since the meltdown, health effects of low-dose exposures from fallout should be analyzed, especially for those in the earliest stages of life. Health status measures after March 2011 such as infant deaths, neonatal deaths, birth defects, stillbirths, low weight births, premature births, and cancers in the first year of life can be analyzed.

Short-term findings of the young can serve as a warning about potential long-term adverse health effects on populations of all ages.  Fukushima fallout appeared to affect all areas of the US, and was especially large in some, mostly in the western part of the nation (2)

Only a few days after the meltdown, I-131 concentration levels in California, Hawaii, Alaska, Oregon and Washington were up to 211 times above the normal level.

21,100 %

At the same time, the number of congenital hypothyroidism cases increased dramatically, seeing a 16 percent increase from March 17 2011 to December 31 2011. In 36 other US states outside of the exposure zone, the risk of congenital hyperthyroidism decreased by 3 percent.

Researchers believe that this finding may serve as further proof that Fukushima has something to do with the unusually high results found on the West Coast.(1)

Radioactive iodine that enters into the body usually gathers in the thyroid, which releases growth hormones. Radiation exposure stunts growth of the body and the brain, and also leads to long-lasting effects which were studied during the Chernobyl nuclear power plant during its meltdown in 1986. 10 years after that incident, researchers at the National Institutes of Health found that higher absorption of I-131 radiation led to an increased risk of thyroid cancer among victims of the Chernobyl incident.

Japan is by order of magnitude,
many times worse than Chernobyl.

Never in my life would I think that 6 nuclear reactors would be at risk. I know the GE engineers that helped design these reactors, they resigned because they knew they were dangerous. Japan built them on an Earthquake fault. We are dealing with diabolical energy, this is the greatest public health hazard the world has ever witnessed – Dr Helen Caldicott

Here's a video that sums up the situation quite well.

I'm not trying to spread fear, nor am I afraid of what has happened in Fukushima, but when it comes to environmental disasters, the nuclear fallout at Fukushima has to be among the worst that has ever happened in the history of humanity.

At one point, over 300 tons of contaminated water had been flooding into the Pacific Ocean from this disaster every single day. Japanese experts estimate Fukushima's fallout at 20-30 times as high as the Hiroshima and Nagasaki nuclear bombings.

There is definitely a lot we are not being told here, just like we weren't with Chernobyl. Water continues to leak, and that area is still prone to an earthquake. Despite the magnitude and extent of this disaster, it's not something to ignore, there are always steps and things we can do to create change.

Fukushima should be the last (out of many) experiences we need to help us realize that we don't have to produce energy this way. Boiling water using nuclear energy in order to generate enough heat and steam to push a turbine is a very elementary way to generate energy. We have technologies that render nuclear power obsolete, like free energy.

We've had multiple studies indicate the correlation between consciousness and our physical material world.

Thoughts, prayers and healing energy sent to Fukushima and the waters affected also helps. Incidents like the one at Fukushima are an indicator for us to  utilize the power of consciousness to heal the planet as well as ourselves, and to shift our means of producing energy to something better.

We still have a window of opportunity to change things; events like this should cause the entire collective to stop and at a stand still, stop with their daily routine, and just say enough is enough, it doesn't have to be this way and there are better ways to do things here.

Fukushima's Children are Dying

Some 39 months after the multiple explosions at Fukushima, thyroid cancer rates among nearby children have skyrocketed to more than forty times (40x) normal.

More than 48 percent of some 375,000 young people-nearly 200,000 kids-tested by the Fukushima Medical University near the smoldering reactors now suffer from pre-cancerous thyroid abnormalities, primarily nodules and cysts.

The rate is accelerating.

More than 120 childhood cancers have been indicated where just three would be expected, says Joseph Mangano, executive director of the Radiation and Public Health Project.

The nuclear industry and its apologists continue to deny this public health tragedy.

Some have actually asserted that "not one person" has been affected by Fukushima's massive radiation releases, which for some isotopes exceed Hiroshima by a factor of nearly 30.

More than 48 percent of some 375,000 young people—nearly 200,000 kids—tested by the Fukushima Medical University near the smoldering reactors now suffer from pre-cancerous thyroid abnormalities, primarily nodules and cysts.

But the deadly epidemic at Fukushima is consistent with impacts suffered among children near the 1979 accident at Three Mile Island and the 1986 explosion at Chernobyl, as well as findings at other commercial reactors.

But a wide range of independent studies confirm heightened infant death rates and excessive cancers among the general population.

Excessive death, mutation and disease rates among local animals were confirmed by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and local journalists.

In the 1980's, federal Judge Sylvia Rambo blocked a class action suit by some 2,400 central Pennsylvania downwinders, claiming not enough radiation had escaped to harm anyone. But after 35 years, no one knows how much radiation escaped or where it went. Three Mile Island's owners have quietly paid millions to downwinders victims in exchange for gag orders.

At Chernobyl, a compendium of more than 5,000 studies has yielded an estimated death toll of more than 1,000,000 people.

The radiation effects on youngsters in downwind Belarus and Ukraine have been horrific. According to Mangano, some 80 percent of the "Children of Chernobyl" born downwinders since the accident have been harmed by a wide range of impacts ranging from birth defects and thyroid cancer to long-term heart, respiratory and mental illnesses.

The findings mean that just one in five
young downwinders can be termed healthy.

Physicians for Social Responsibility and the German chapter of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War have warned of parallel problems near Fukushima.

The United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) has recently issued reports downplaying the disaster's human impacts. UNSCEAR is interlocked with the United Nations' International Atomic Energy Agency, whose mandate is to promote atomic power.

The IAEA has a long-term controlling gag order on UN findings about reactor health impacts.

For decades UNSCEAR and the World Health Organization have run protective cover for the nuclear industry's widespread health impacts. Fukushima has proven no exception.

In response, Physicians for Social Responsibility and the German International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War have issued a ten-point rebuttal, warning the public of the UN's compromised credibility. The disaster is "ongoing" say the groups, and must be monitored for decades. "Things could have turned for the worse" if winds had been blowing toward Tokyo rather than out to sea (and towards America).

There is on-going risk from irradiated produce, and among site workers whose doses and health impacts are not being monitored. Current dose estimates among workers as well as downwinders are unreliable, and special notice must be taken of radiation's severe impacts on the human embryo.

UNSCEAR's studies on background radiation are also "misleading," say the groups, and there must be further study of genetic radiation effects as well as "non-cancer diseases." The UN assertion that "no discernible radiation-related health effects are expected among exposed members" is "cynical," say the groups. They add that things were made worse by the official refusal to distribute potassium iodide, which might have protected the public from thyroid impacts from massive releases of radioactive I-131.

Overall, the horrific news from Fukushima can only get worse.

Radiation from three lost cores is still being carried into the Pacific. Management of spent fuel rods in pools suspended in the air and scattered around the site remains fraught with danger.

The pro-nuclear Shinzo Abe regime wants to reopen Japan's remaining 48 reactors. It has pushed hard for families who fled the disaster to re-occupy irradiated homes and villages.

But Three Mile Island, Chernobyl and the plague of death and disease now surfacing near Fukushima make it all too clear that the human cost of such decisions continues to escalate - with our children suffering first and worst.

We are appealing to all of you, students, activists, bloggers, podcasters, journalists, lawyers, doctors, stand up to help denounce and expose those pro-nuclear agents' illegal permanent harassment of Mari Takenouchi.

A Fukushima evacuee, single mother, Mari Takenouchi became a full-time independent journalist after 311, a beacon in the night calling attention to the plight of the Fukushima children, of the Fukushima evacuees and non-evacuees, calling for the protection and evacuation of the Fukushima Children.

She needs OUR HELP.

She is now under observation by some nuclear offices and agents, virtual and in real life. Those pro-nuclear agents are constantly harassing her, pressuring her, intimidating her, in their will to silence her.

We can make them stop, if we all denounce those illegal acts, on our blogs, podcasts, websites articles, bringing maximum exposure to their harassment, those pro-nukers will realize that their actions are counter-productive, that more they pressure her to silence her, more they will be bring attention to her cause worldwide and more international support for Mari Takenouchi, then they will have to reconsider and stop.

Due to the present Japanese Government politics and their recent State Secrecy Law, somehow most the Japanese people are presently scared to support her, to become involved and implicated.

It belongs to us, the foreign No Nukes activists, to bring her our full and loud support, that is the least we can do for a lady who  has been courageously opposing and denouncing the activities of Nuclear lobby Ethos Project in Fukushima.

Mari needs our help, let's not abandon this lady to fight those crooks alone.

Thank you in advance for you future given support to Mari.

Mari Takenouchi, a Japanese journalist is under criminal accusation by Fukushima ETHOS leaders – who work FOR the nuclear holocaust industry, AGAINST people, but fake it as humanitarian aid.

The same fate awaits the Japanese people and their children living in areas contaminated by the Fukushima disaster because the same strategy is being put in place in Japan with the same players, the same pseudo-scientific justifications and under the aegis of the same authorities.":

CHECK THIS OUT:

A Nuclear Bomb Explosion Versus A Nuclear Meltdown

Some ask why Hiroshima and Nagasaki were rebuilt and repopulated so soon after a nuclear bomb blast, yet Fukushima and Chernobyl remain unsafe to inhabit into the indefinite future.

The answer lies in the vast difference of irradiating potential between a nuclear bomb and a nuclear reactor.
Nuclear bombs are designed to cause maximum concussive damage within the shortest amount of time by creating as much energy as possible from a runaway nuclear fission reaction.

Nuclear reactors on the other hand are designed to create a low-level of energy from a very controlled and sustained nuclear fission reaction. The radioactive isotopes from the fission product mixture of a nuclear bomb are relatively short-lived (<50 years) whereas those from the meltdown of a nuclear reactor are long-lived and must be stored away safely for tens of thousands of years (essentially forever).

Approximate half-lives of some of the isotopes in the spent nuclear fuel are:
?

The nuclear bombs used in World War II were detonated roughly 2,000 feet above ground and their radioisotopes were carried by the wind and dispersed over a very large area.

The nuclear bomb called "Little Boy" used over Hiroshima contained only 140 pounds of fissionable material (Uranium-235) and "Fat Man" used over Nagasaki contained just 14 pounds of Plutonium-239.

These are minute amounts of radioisotopes when compared to the 180 tons of nuclear fuel at Chernobyl and the staggering 1,600 tons at Fukushima.

Explosions and meltdowns at nuclear reactors occur at ground level, creating more radioactive isotopes due to neutron activation with the soils while spreading their radiation across the planet, year after year after year.

Today the background radiation in Hiroshima and Nagasaki is said to be the same as the global average anywhere on Earth.

Ground zero at Chernobyl and Fukushima won't be habitable for 20,000 years or longer.

Nuclear bombs kill hundreds of thousands of people instantly while a nuclear reactor meltdown kills (thousands, millions ?) of people over years, decades, and generations.

Summary:
Following the unprecedented triple meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant after Japan's 3/11 earthquake and tsunami, a myriad of far reaching questions has arisen...??

What's the current state of the Fukushima nuclear reactors?

How much radiation have they already released?

What type of health impacts can we expect?

Is our seafood supply safe?

And what about the other 435 nuclear reactors around the world, 104 in the US alone - 22 of them the same exact design as those that exploded and melted down in Fukushima, are they safe??

Yet these are not easy questions to get answers to.

The mainstream media and the internet are full of conflicting viewpoints & information.

For example, UN scientists have already claimed that the health impacts of Fukushima will be negligible and statistically insignificant, which is parroted in CNN's documentary "Pandora's Promise".

However independent scientists tell a very different story; they project on the order of a million cancers within the next few decades in Japan alone.??So how does such a massive scientific discrepancy occur???

Nuclear Exodus explores the ties that inexorably bind the nuclear power industry to the military industrial complex, and how the lust for nuclear weapons causes governments to push nuclear power on their citizens, while covering up the true health effects of radiation exposure.

It delves deep into the legacy & lessons of Chernobyl, nuclear waste management, nuclear terrorism, & solar flares which could potentially trigger hundreds of nuclear meltdowns across the world - threatening life on Earth as we know it.

But can human civilization truly generate the electricity it needs without nuclear power, especially while reducing our energy dependence on fossil fuels? How far have renewable technologies come in 2014 exactly?

And if some cataclysmic disaster did threaten the world, would there be anyway to realistically protect life on Earth?

Could Mars actually be a feasible back-up planet anytime soon?

These questions and more are explored in great depth during Nuclear Exodus: Pandora's Promise Was A Lie.

(This is version 2.2, the most current and up to date version. It's been tightened up with some important new facts, plus enhanced audio & visuals!)
