That looks like the Moon on a long exposure, with some mist covering the Moon partially from time to time during the exposure.
I think you are probably correct.

Possibly a processing artefact due to something dripping during the processing of the picture.  If you look just below and left there is another one near the "saucer".

I wish this one was real.

That's not a UFO in the clouds, that's something (probably a piece of wood) on a frost covered rock.

Here's the full pic Armap.

"Today, a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration – that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively. There's no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we're the imagination of ourselves. Here's Tom with the weather."

It looks a lot more impressive in that shot.

How would the clouds and object look in terms of focus if the object were a long way from the camera or alternatively on the window of a plane that the picture was taken through.  The picture would surely look different depending on where the object is right?

Elvis Hendrix

Ah Pim good point.
I like this photo, it looks real to me.

What about this one?

First of all, look at the "clouds", they are not clouds, clouds don't have sharp edges.
Also, there were no aeroplanes in 1871. :)

Right. :)

OH yes (missing the obvious). LOL  To be fair they did have cameras and airships then.

The clouds do look like they have crystalline edges which is clearly visible in higher res..  Thanks ArMaP

Sorry like but I don't buy that is just a stick stuck in snow. Nah.

Why would anyone have photographed a stick in a snowdrift?
UFOs were not in the public psyche then.
Some one took a photograph for a reason.

Also as an ex commercial helicopter pilot,I can tell you that clouds can do All kinds of things when their around mountains. When wind shear or changes in temp and direction at different altitudes comes into play, clouds can be very jagged in appearance and menacing looking.

Not snow, frost.

So, what do you think it is?

zorgon

I thought that one was a train in snow?

Just add snow to this scene :D

And this is the building on the summit

Elvis Hendrix

The scale is all wrong for the train idea :P

It looks a lot like mashed potato to me.... but I've never been any good at photo analysis.

NOTE: RAF photographic intelligence thought my talents were better wasted elsewhere. :P
