Are TV detector vans just a cunning con trick? For decades it's been claimed they trap licence cheats. In fact, they've never led to a single prosecution.

Anyone Familar with UK TV...I wonder if this is true !  ???

We used the PAL M standard here in Austrlia (Just switched off January 10th 2014).
It wouldn't be possible to detect whether or not you were receiving a signal from the transmitter or not, so the vans most likely detected the Pixel Clock frequency at 13.5 MHz and/or the LO (Local Oscillator) Signal at 3.575611 MHz.
Rumours that they existed here were around too.
Can't tell you either way, whether they existed or not.  :)

Told you i couldn't spell

Yes its all been rubbish from the start. Just check out the people on youtoob confronting these jokers.
Do you know whats inside a TV detector van. A bloke at the steering wheel whos paid minimum wage by an outside contractor called "Capita". Hes not even on a permanent contract. But hes there to intimidate and instill fear into joe public. in a scam thats been running since the sixties.

So they are adamant that they had this tech back then!!
Really! so a bozo in an old ford anglia with a pretend ariel on the roof could detect a RECIEVED signal coming into your home could he?

No.. Not really.. Nada.. nyett. Never.

Remember who you are dealing with here.. The BBC, the Propaganda wing for the british ruling elite.
Devious liers who have sent your sons and brothers to war since they had the power.

I digress.
The BBC Television Detector Van... Pfft. Its a bad, sad joke.
The next time you see one throw a brick at it.. Then run home and watch Top Gear ;)

its basically extortion.
i mean just becuase i buy petrol from an Esso garage does that mean i have to pay BP for the right to own and run my car??

QuoteAustralia

Radio licence fees were introduced in Australia in the 1920s to fund the first privately owned broadcasters which were not permitted to sell advertising. With the formation of the government-owned Australian Broadcasting Commission in 1932 the licence fees were used to fund ABC broadcasts while the privately owned stations were permitted to seek revenue from advertising and sponsorship. Television licence fees were also introduced in 1956 when the ABC began TV transmissions. All licence fees were abolished in 1974 by the Australian Labor Party government led by Gough Whitlam on the basis that the near-universality of television and radio services meant that public funding was a fairer method of providing revenue for government-owned radio and television broadcasters. The ABC has since then been funded by government grants, now totalling around A$1.13 billion a year, and its own commercial activities (merchandising, overseas sale of programmes, etc.).

In 1964 the Australian Television Licence cost £6; the fine for not having a licence was £100. The licence was issued on a punch card.
