Altough I have never hit the ground at 200kmh. I have hit it many times at lesser speeds. Now what happens if you drive that bike into a brick wall at that spped? Horizontal or vertical not much difference if you stop instantly. The bike might even go through a wall but I doubt if a person would make it. Meaning that when it hit at that speed it would not just leave a litle dent in the bike or wall. It would be smashed beyond belief. The person also.

If I lower the tail gate on a truck and drop a watermellon on a tilled field it will sink into the dirt more than that Russian part did. Even rain will dent the eart and leave a crater. A small one but you might get my thought. I also think that a lot depends on the angle of hit. 90 degrees vs 10 would get different results.

On the stort I can only read what they wrote. Maybe the entire thing is BS and they made the parts for a show...People do things like that.

D I was NOT implying it was B.S. quite the opposite in fact.

I have to admit JimO is correct about space junk returning to Earth.

On a few occasions we have had space junk come down in NZ, (No Craters left) but what was described
in China, may NOT fit the description of Space Junk ?

Do you mean:

As if an airplane exploded at 35k ft. All the parts would react differently?

That I can see. I would imagine the engines would be so far buried in the ground we would need cranes to pull them out where as one of the doors or blown open lugage would tend to start floating down and might land rather gracefully.

Something like that? Only in a vacuum should they drop the same.

One thing I am not sure of at all, is the speed at which this junk would need to be traveling to have a fire trail behind it all the way to the ground ( if we believe what they said ) Many things including every jet I've been on travels faster than that and we never left a fire trail? So I am very confussed on the 300 mph max and how it relates to everything else. Ears wide open.

It might help to know how high and how fast the rocket was going at the time of failure. I am blocked from all of it and just stuck with the junk.

On the BS part, I meant maybe the farmers made up the entire story. Hey last year they made a fake Alien out of boredom. 15 minutes of fame deal. I know you were not implying that, I was! They are most likely charging people to see the space junk and they wanted it in a controlled area. If they make a lot of money, soon we will have space junk falling all over the country. ;D  lol.

Heilongjiang Province

That part of China -- along the ground track of Russian satellite launchings -- has long been a hotbed of "UFO sightings" clearly sparked by the Russian rockets. Here's another one, an EMI case in Haines's supposedly  'authoritative' data base of 'unsolvable' pilot cases:

In Northern China on June 18, 1982, many sightings were reported from Heilongjiang Province, between 21:10 and 22:53. One of the most interesting case is that reported by five Chinese Air Force pilots on patrol over north China's military frontier. At about 21:57 the jet fighter's electrical systems malfunctioned ; communications and navigation systems failed. Suddenly the pilots encountered and UFO of a milky yellowish-green luminous color, about the size of the full moon. The object grew larger and picked up speed, at which point it looked « as big as a mountain of mist ». Then black spots were seen in the interior of the phenomenon. One pilot stated in his report : « When I first saw the object, it flew toward me at a high rate of speed as it whirled rapidly. While it was rotating it generated rings of light. In the center of the light ring was fire. In ten seconds the center of the ring exploded, then the body of the object expanded rapidly  The planes were forced to return to base because of the equipment failures. The other four pilots also prepared reports. It is not known if gun-camera film was taken. After 30 seconds, the beam of light disappeared completly and replaced by a yellow sphere with clear edges. This sphere climbed rapidly and increased its size and brightness.........The instruments returned to normal when the pilot went down to 500 meters altitude. At 22:01, One of the pilot arrived to his first turn at Cong Huei. Then after he flew for 3 mn toward his second step when his radio began to jamm : big noises resounded in the receiver, as if rain clouds and thunderstorm were in front of him, and the voice of the control tower operator became less audible. The radio compass instead of giving the direction of the tracking station direction gave a direction 30° on his right. He climbed to 6,000 then 7,000 meters, then he flew horizontally but the unusual noises continued to be heard in the receivers and the radio compas was still indicating a wrong direction 30° on the right. The pilot saw a bright object above the horizon. Very quickly this object became a beam of yellow light like a car headlight This beam of light was directed vertically toward the ground, in the same direction indicated by the radio compass.

Dropping something, even a bullet and something that has kinetic energy fall at two different speeds. Rocket parts have kinetic assist and can hit hard. If a light weight part is just dropped then it can hit at 300 or less. Other parts can travel much faster and hit at mach speeds if they have kinetic energy.

..... If I use your logic then why are not all of the space craft just dropped to earth from the upper atmosphere in a ball structure. No parachutes, no wings, nothing, just drop them. The ball in the photo is not very aerodynamic.

Come on, you can figure this one out. What is the shape that presents, at all angles, the highest air drag for the lowest mass?

You'd expect such shapes to decelerate VERY quickly and drop below fireball speed while still in the thin upper atmosphere. More massive objects would retain enough speed as they descended into thicker layers to be overwhelmed by super-hot plasma until they physically collapsed from the G-loading -20 G's or more, maybe twice as much] and fragmented.

What reaches the ground more or less intact is the stuff -- hollow spheres -- that is optimal for fast aero braking. The other stuff does mostly burn up. You are seeing a subset population originally of all shapes that has been winnowed out by a process that favors specific shapes.

Would you agree that all parts/objects reach their own terminal velocity and no 2 parts are exactly the same. A feather never reaches the same speed as a cannon ball in an atmospheric environment?

Would you agree that kinetic energy has any thing to do with the rate at which an object falls to Earth. Meteor vs feather from a bird?

So if I took a cannon ball and dropped it out of a balloon say at, 500 feet, It should reach terminal velocity. But if I took that same canon ball and shot it out of my canon and it reached a height of 500 feet in the arc then it should have a lot of kinetic energy attached to it and when it hit the ground the results should be different. One is a simple plop on the ground while the other would do a lot of damage and leave a nice hole in the ground.

I see here several types of space junk and how they met their end. Some of it just drops down and some of it rains down with tremendous energy. Like killing the dinos. That one hit much faster than 300 mph. Some can reach speeds of 20,000 mph and greater.

My question still stands that I am working on also is how fast would an object have to be going to leave a fire trail all the way to impact?

And yes I do think that many objects can fall from the sky and sort of float down. It happens all the time. Those are not in question here. Just a fire trailed round ball is.

I also stand corrected on the bullet. Once it reached the end of its kenetic energy and stopped, only gravity would then be at work. You would need to get to that altitude and fire the gun down to add in kenetic energy. Thanks Matrix!
