Possibly :P

ATS is back up  had to get a password reset myself. Still no explanation of what happened.

Looking at the posts though... if the internet were to shut down for a week, the world would end

LOL Maybe THAT is the disaster for 2012 :D

I myself am having the same problem! even the NEW password does not let me in to ATS. is this cos i signed amaratasu petition?

And i had an e mail from the Halifax Bank saying someone had tried to access on line banking there and had attempted to log in unsuccessfully 37 times. i don't have a Halifax account ?

Well, Well! Nice too see you all here!
As for these events taking place, during the times of said encryption data being not only rotated and indistinguishably preserved as data encryption mumbo-jumbo, I feel it would feasibly be worthy too take note of an event of rather uncannily that has been taking place since January 18th 2012.  ...

"Pure Coincidence?" I think not with what was said thus far on our web site.

Wow.  Yeah, I'm thinking not a coincidence at all.  Glad I was not one of these People affected!  How sucky is THAT?

@seeker

Do these People know where DD lives (lived)?  Can anyOne go by and see what's up?  I am VERY worried about Him!

@slealthyaroura

What are You getting when You sign in (or try to) with the new password?  I am officially banned and if I sign in, I can't see any thread (everything comes back 404ed), and if I try to log out, I get that lovely pic in the OP I posted.

I doubt it has to do with signing My petition...but One never knows with spooks involved.

So it just does not let You log in at all?  It isn't a banning.  I can log in, but can't log out (I just get the ban notice), and cannot look at any threads.  I hope Your issue is resolved.

AboveTopSecret.com recently discovered that the user names, encrypted passwords, and email addresses of a small percentage of users who used the ATS Media Portal were obtained by hackers. Where we have learned that this information was posted on publicly accessible websites, we are taking all reasonable steps to request removal of such information.

If you visit AboveTopSecret.com again, you will be asked to change your password because, unfortunately, you were one of the affected users. Please note that ATS never requests or stores your name or financially sensitive information, and such information was not obtained by the hackers. In addition, ATS automatically changed your password and the passwords of other affected users immediately upon discovering the incident. Your password is no longer operational, which is why you will need to use our password recovery system to generate a new random password to log in. For your additional security, the ATS Media Portal has been taken offline temporarily.

In light of this incident, as well as incidents that may have affected other websites, please take basic precautions if you receive suspicious email. ATS does not email any ATS users who have not opted into our newsletter service. An email claiming to be from us asking for anything is fake. And in general, if you get an email that asks for personal or financial information, or a user name and password from any source, you should never reply. To be clear, under no circumstances will any legitimate ATS representative ever ask you to disclose your password, nor will an ATS representative send you any emails requesting anything. Your password for any website should be strong, which means passwords should be at least 8 digits or longer and include upper and lower case letters and numbers.

True, but My point was...  ATS is not going to volunteer any further info.
I don't get it, what further info is there to present?

That name is not on the list. :)
Thanks, ArmaP  ;D I have never used the media portal so I should be un-noticed 8)

Hope that helps clear it up. Obviously I don't have any inside info from ATS (unless ArMaP has more to share without getting in hot water) All this was found via our friend Google.... err well sorta friend :P
I don't have anything to add, and, as usual, I only talk about information that is (or at least was) publicly accessible.

What I know I read on the original thread where the situation was reported and from where I got to the pastebin page with the 70 names list and the link for the (working at the time) download of the real list.

Ah missed this  so the passwords were actually cracked? The list i saw they were still encrypted. That is a big difference  :o
In some cases the passwords had already been decrypted even before they were known. :D

The passwords were encrypted with a MD5 hash function (probably the same used by this forum's software), that turns any text into a large number, usually represented in hexadecimal. As there is no way of knowing the original text from the resulting hash, only the brute force method (a method in which a hash is created for all possibilities until we get a hash that's the same as the original) works, but it's too time consuming for longer texts and texts that use capital letters, numbers and symbols (that's why we should have long passwords with lower and upper case, and preferably also with numbers and symbols), so some sites present long lists of already decrypted hashes, to make it easier to find an already decrypted one (a commonly used password like '12345678' is already on those lists) instead of spending some time decrypting it.

When I went looking for the hashes I found some old lists that already had some passwords (someone had already decrypted those and published them), and that happened with some of the passwords on the list, like Amaterasu's. But some hashes had been decrypted on January 30, so someone did decrypted them, but, apparently, did not use them.

Anyone that has the long list (like myself :) ) can decrypt those passwords, it's just a matter of time. As an example, a program I have that decrypts MD5 hashes takes 8 hours to try all the possibilities of an 8 characters string of lower case letters, 8 days if I add upper case letters, and one year if I add the 10 digits from 0 to 9.

Just write mail to staff and get it fixed. They have some 8000 + names to fix. I am sure ArMaP can give you the correct email

LOL If I were you I would go yell at the bank and scream "What have you done with my money? I had 48,342.98 in there!!!"

Afterall if they claim you have an account that was hacked....   ;D

Yeah this forum requires capital and small letters a symbol and numbers. Your may not be as you logged in at the beginning before I figured out how to set that :D

Quote(a commonly used password like '12345678' is already on those lists) instead of spending some time decrypting it.

I installed security systems for many years. You would be surprised how many houses have the default password of 1234 (12369 for ADT) People just get lazy and never change it

Let Me rephrase...  ATS is not going to further volunteer information.  All any will get is a rehash at best - and if there IS more info, They will not be providing it.  That is all.  [shrug]
