I don't get it, what further info is there to present?

Hi ArMaP,

I guess this question should really be directed at me as I am the one asking for more information. I have not had a reply from ATS and I am not really expecting one.

This is the information I am looking for and would like some answers to.

- My email address is linked to my user account - This means that a mapping between user account and email adress is available on the internet to those that had access to the files.  A huge breach of privacy. What changes will you make that will fix this in case this happens again? Are there any types of work trying to ensure this would not happen. (I doubt this very much).

- I already have problems with the way ATS runs its business which keeps me at bay from expressing my true opinions on their site. I do not trust the owners when they say they respect opinions but have double standards.  Is this a conspiracy? If not, create a thread please. Oh, it might affect your sponsored income? Fine, say nothing and that is what I will end up thinking?

Amaterasu is correct in saying that nothing will come of my email, they did not respond.

With my information if I chose to be anonymous in my discussion and I wished it to stay that way, its my way of expressing myself without bias allowing the same for my opponents in that discussion.

- If they were truly hacked, where is the media fury and following acts of dissent? Where is the outrage? Where is the I want to fight Anonymous for their wrong doing thread?

- I do not appreciate that my data has been exposed and that those responsible do not have anything other to show or tell but a forum thread that you cannot reply to that is identical to the email I received.  I have logged out of the site and will not log back in until some answers have been made.

I am disappointed in this act that is avoiding any discussion on the topic.

What would be the point of such a thread? It is impossible to lay the blame with "anonymous".  Anyone can claim they speak for anonymous and claim they did it.  Anyone can also actually do it and try to fit anonymous up.  The whole thing is becoming a joke.

I understand why you do not like it when ATS refuse to allow discussion of a topic but pretend to believe in free speech.  Unless you are slandering the site then all discussion should be fair play in in opinion.  My guess is that the reason is that ATS admin want their members to forget this little episode as quickly as possible....

Note:  As a moderator, can I remind members that we DO NOT want this site to turn into a lets go bash ATS area.  If you have legitimate concerns then air them by all means.  However, we do not encourage the constant bashing of other sites on the Pegasus Forum.

I am not bashing ATS, lets get that clear. I have known the site for many years long before my last subscription and yes I have had my problems with it but have mostly kept it to myself.  But, when it comes to my privacy with no explanation then sorry...  I have a problem and the reason I am posting relates to this thread and also the Zorgon thread relating to Conspiracy sites and Anonymous.

No worries mate, I am not referring to you specifically.  You have every right to be concerned about your privacy.  Apologies for any misunderstanding. :)

If there was a major problem with what anyone has posted so far then the member would have received a PM not a public rebuke.  I am sending out a message to the general membership.

Just write mail to staff and get it fixed. They have some 8000 + names to fix. I am sure ArMaP can give you the correct email
Done. :)

Thank You for stepping up here.  I rather got the impression that You had asked for more than merely, "Gee.  What happened?"

And I too am not surprised at the lack of response, which might go without saying...  [grin]

I think there will be an answer to that tomorrow.

I really don't have an answer to that, as I don't see any real question there.

QuoteAmaterasu is correct in saying that nothing will come of my email, they did not respond.
I guess an answer depends on what you said.

QuoteWith my information if I chose to be anonymous in my discussion and I wished it to stay that way, its my way of expressing myself without bias allowing the same for my opponents in that discussion.
I don't understand what you mean by that or if that is a question.

Quote- If they were truly hacked, where is the media fury and following acts of dissent? Where is the outrage? Where is the I want to fight Anonymous for their wrong doing thread?
"If"? Why, do you think they published their own passwords on purpose? And why "media fury"? Outrage? For what, it's just some passwords and email addresses, most people did not use an email address that identifies them when they registered.

Wait a little more, as I am doing, what's the rush? There was a need to rush to remove the file from Mediafire (I think it was), as it had 8369 user names and passwords (but only 8368 email addresses, it looks like the dumping of the information was not complete) and even the smaller, 70 names list (I think) where most names were from moderators. Now, there is no rush in talking about it, just on find a way to prevent it from happening in the future.

fredus

Thanks ArMap for answering my questions. I will start off by saying I have a lot of respect for you from ATS. You are top notch as we say down here.

QuoteI don't understand what you mean by that or if that is a question.
You are correct that its not a question but really a lead up to my... may I say paranoia? Trust is earned is what I have been taught and that it is a two way street.
Apologies if you might see that as a rant because it kind of was.

Quote"If"? Why, do you think they published their own passwords on purpose? And why "media fury"? Outrage? For what, it's just some passwords and email addresses, most people did not use an email address that identifies them when they registered.

Well, I did not get a chance to see the file and I do not know what information has been given out and who may have used it and I have no idea what implications this might have for me. This is my concern.

QuoteWait a little more, as I am doing, what's the rush?
There is no rush and all this is already forgotten. When I have enough iinformation  that will make me feel better about it all then I will log in as per normal. Right now, I am uncomfortable.

I work in business intelligence. I know exactly how to deal with information. Just add that to your image of me and you may understand my reasons for wanting to take close attention to my privacy on the internet.

To give an idea of what it looked like, here's the line for my account:

80 armap 33138d5f8eebff803bf2e783cc003ed armap@netcabo.pt

As you can see, it was line number 80 (meaning that I was the 80th person to activate my Media Portal account), then it shows my username, the encoded password I used, and the email address that I used when I registered.

The complete file has 8369 lines like this, with the exception of the last line, that does not show the last column (the email address).

About all you can do is write Springer and ask.

Indeed! Mark is a very approachable and reasonable guy. I have a lot of respect for him. When I received my ban, (which I deserved) I explained the personal circumstances that led up to my particular action which he understood... given we are all human, not machines. Mark gave me an extra 24 hours to cool down and my f
ull ban was lifted.

IRM!  So glad to see You here!

I have no interest in going back to that other site.  I like it SOOOO much better here.  I have taken another tack to get My information out - even joined (eek!) Twitter (@AmaterasuSolar)!

And emailing everyOne I can think of to get sigs on My petition.  (I need 12 more to hit the 100 milestone!)

If that other site wants to ensure that My work is buried...it's pretty much a waste of My time.  [grin]

They just don't want you to bury all threads with your work.  ;)

[smile]  Somehow, ArM, I just don't see a few threads (a very small percentage) a day with one short post that offers a solution to the problem brought up as burying anything.

But not letting Me offer a link or even suggest a search parameter...  That IS burying My work.  AnyOne new coming in, and I could not inform Them (unless I had some way of knowing who was new and U2Ued Them) of anything.  Not regarding My work.  Which, to be frank, is ALL I have to live for now.

Meh.  My time is better spent elsewhere.

I did catch the wink, though.  [smile]
