While this is Earth-based technology, and maybe not really new tech, for sure it is a new use/application of this technology. And, if it makes sense to use it for launching aircraft from aircraft carriers, why not for potential multi-scale alternative application for launch assist in all types of spacecraft launch situations?

And, if this works for launching aircraft from aircraft carriers, why not make an adapt package for use on ground-based, and maybe remote take-off/landing strips not much longer/not much bigger than the top-side of an aircraft carrier?? Such would drastically reduce the work time to make a runway operational, and easy to dismantle when the time came to vacate. If you notice in the video in the below link, these tests are being done at a ground based location! :)

And Wow, watch the video of test launches in the below link too. Works like a charm!!

I'm guessing the technology is related to this.  Not really new but interesting that they are using magnetic propulsion (if they are).

Piemander, yes that is really neat technology! Trains like are described in the video would be nice, but are very costly, and I would be concerned about circumstantial safety at those speeds.  My thought relative to this technology is, the reality of any paradigm changes resulting from it are "still in waiting". The plus/minuses of magnetism and gravitational forces seem to still standing ready for those great discoveries by man that indeed can transform man's application and use of these energy fields. At least this seems to be the case for public consumption! :)

Very "old" concept :P Magnetic Launch Tubes are in all our SciFi movies  Looks like this

NASA version
Different technologies to push a spacecraft down a long rail have been tested in several settings, including this Magnetic Levitation (MagLev) System evaluated at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center. Engineers have a number of options to choose from as their designs progress. Photo credit: NASA

Launch Ring Magnetic Launch System By LaunchPoint

The Launch Ring, a vast circle of superconducting magnets capable of hurling satellites and other cargo into space, is the subject of a new two-year study financed by the USAF. The study will be carried out by LaunchPont Technologies, based in Goleta, California. The study will be led by James Fiske, who has done advanced work in designing maglev (magnetic levitation) freight transportation systems.

The Launch Ring will be similar in some ways to the enormous particle accelerators already in use. Most importantly, the device will (as its name implies) use a circular track, rather than the straight track considered in earlier designs (not to mention being considered in early science fiction novels).

Also makes a great weapon too :P

Notice the patch is in SPACE?

Pimander

I knew I should have followed BTS patch research.  Good find.

Have you seen any .mil stuff on catapult type launchers.  It looks like the cheapest possible launch system to me.

I was thinking Battlestar Galactica.  I wanted to be Starbuck too. LOL  ::)

Check out the new staff.

We have lots of patches to add  Sorta stopped when no one showed interest. Patches tell a great story :D  The pages are here  http://www.thelivingmoon.com/45jack_files/03files/Mission_Patches_Their_Source_and_Meaning_001.html

Well the video above is a NAVY public release  so was the NAVY Laser Gun that was originally built and tested in 1972 :P  Sure I can pull up .mil files on mag launchers and particle weapons but I will likely just add that to the website as I update. I find generally its a waste of time to do it in the forum. No one reads the library threads :P

As for the new Battlestar Galactica  I find it amusing that the Cylons now want to become Human LMAO  while we are currently making Cylons

Makes you go Hmmmmm

Notice the URL of that picture :P www. boeing.com/defense-space/military/x-45/images/DVD-883-1.jpg

This was first given to me by that Spook that visited years ago  before it was public :D
