QuoteTelstra is Australia's biggest internet service provider (ISP), so when its connection stops working, lots of people notice. An as yet unidentified problem with its network knocked out most customers for at least half an hour today and impacted other providers

As Telstra still owns all the landlines, the shutdown affected 'every' provider in the country. That included Optus, Vodaphone, Virgin, Dodo, and the 3 Network.

QuoteAt 2:46PM, Telstra media spokesperson Craig Middleton acknowledged the issue online:

Telstra internet is back after 35 min outage. Cause not known at this stage. Appears to have affected all states.

QuoteWe can confirm that Telstra customers lost access to the Internet at approximately 1.50pm. The cause of the outage is unclear at this stage but affected the whole country. Telstra is working quickly to identify the cause of the problem and will keep customers regularly updated on progress.

So! The whole Telstra Network shuts down for 35mins (2hrs for most other networks) and Telstra doesn't know why??

Of course they do, they just aren't telling you.

From an insider I gleaned the information that it was a Chinese Hack of the Network that shut down all the routers and wiped the NVRAM in them. (The NVRAM stores the routing tables in the routers).
He also went so far as to say that, they the Chinese, were testing the ability to cripple a country through shutting down it's Information Networks!
That is why they don't know 'officially', as they don't want you to know the truth.

That Australia is a 'sitting duck' for Cyber Warfare, and unless we get out act together it won't be long before they manipulate their ability to wreak havoc on our Telecommunications Systems!

Ahh for once I have to say it is good to be on old 'hit and miss' isp  ;D

You are going to love this Starwarp, guessing you already read about it but it does need to be posted mate ;)

What A DoDo! Telstra, iiNet Network Crash
Quote
The CEO of ISP Dodo, Larry Kestelman, said one of its (minor) network routers "was causing an issue between ourselves and Telstra, that's had larger ramifications than it should have with other providers,"

Here IS what every tom dick and Harry will miss and the two main news sources failed to report in their articles
Quote
"Even though everything is up and running now, the two companies are still investigating the root cause of the problem."

Dodo takes blame for internet outage affecting millions

Quote
Dodo played a role in causing the outage that affected millions of fixed-line and mobile internet connections across the country this afternoon, Dodo's chief has confirmed.

Chief says

QuoteWhat it looks like has happened ... is a very minor hardware failure on one of the routers that has caused some big issues between ourselves and Telstra and had a flow on effect to others which it absolutely shouldn't have," he said

"Telstra is saying that there were some overseas routing issues as well - but to me it sounds like it was a combination of things that caused it."

Thanks for that info Somamech!

Isn't it funny that they are blaming DODO for an inexplicable fault that defies logic, and can't really happen!
It really is funny, when those of us in the know, see these 'press releases' and chuckle at the bullpoop they feed the public.
How can a router fault propagate through the whole network? Isn't that what 'Fault Tolerance' and Routing is all about? The ability to continue working and isolate the faulty node 'without' affecting the nodes down stream?

Chuckle, Chuckle, is all I can say.  ;D

No Probs at all posting on my behalf posting a couple of news articles Starwarp... and more thanking you for the insight!  8)

You are bloody so correct in the LOL factor!

Blame it on the DODO   ;D

Its damn Funny how this has been mitigated.  Take the two of the most disliked ISP's and weave a story!

I don't have my Real John Lear Tin Foil Hat yet (must order one)  but i will vitually slap it on and ponder if this is cyberwar hack has anything to do with the current state of political affairs in Canberra ?

I'm not keen on any of them so I have to look at it from a money angle for thee tin foil hat contemplation.  China are ripping us off in mining along with the rest of the world, so they may not want Rudd in and sent in a message... Then again seeing I'm sorta attached to the Mandarin speaking world he woulda got a lot of votes from the all intelligent public purely because he spent time in Taiwan learning the lingo at NTU if I recall right.

Posted purley for entertainment purpose's as them monkeys in what they think is power should only be used for comedic purposes  ;D

Has to be link there somewhere perhaps !
