The 1909 Grand Canyon Hoax !

In April of 1909, the Arizona Gazette published a mildly amusing hoax about a Tibetan-style underground civilization found in the Grand Canyon, much like dozens of other hoaxes of its era, such as the 1885 Moberly, Mo. lost city hoax. The characters in the story never existed, and there is no evidence whatsoever that the cave in question ever existed. Nevertheless, thanks to David Childress misunderstanding the article as referencing Egyptians rather than Tibetans (the subhead even reads "Orient"!), the hoax continues to live on as a staple of fringe history. I wrote about the hoax in my first ever piece of original online skeptical reporting, back in 2002, and that article was cited in Ked Feder's Encyclopedia of Dubious Archaeology. Below is the full text of the original newspaper hoax, preceded by an article from the same paper one month earlier that seems to have inspired the hoax, or was designed to set the stage for it.

The real question is if it were not a hoax would we ever know?

If my giants book with golden cover contained information that could help all of mankind how would I get that information to the public? The few would take it and benefit while I would be discredited and my find would be a hoax for profit!

How many people have found things that could effect us all only to become, "hoaxers" where would we find any truth if it squeezed through? I would say, as I said before, the bottom of the barrel, maybe not Sorcha Faal as they seem to be working the opposite side, taking truth adding enough lies so that the whole story is dirtied, the water so foul that we throw out the baby with the bath water!

Some interesting stories put up on the thread I have not heard before, fun reads!
For the many people who say there are a thousand of these stories and they are untrue let me tell you one.

My Father was also called Doc for his skill in healing horses, he worked as a wild horse breaker on ranches and all of the rest of the cattle ranch work. He was a very nice looking wild man, hard drinker strong rodie winning guy. Everyone respected him for his many war medals and the fact that he seemed to have no fear.
An old prospector was dying in 1962 (just like in all of the stories) he decided my father was who he would leave his gold find to as of yet unclaimed in the desert mountains. After the Man died my Father started taking samples with from the site, we went with him, it was a simple cleft in a wall of rock near the top of a small mountain.

The samples assayed out at what (I was told) they said was the highest gold content in any ore they had tested in (I don't know how many years or ever). My Father filed a claim and he died a few months later. My Mother moved us away and as ditzy as she has always been did nothing about the claim.

I went back many years later and saw it was in full production by a mining co. so some of the old prospector deathbed secret map stories are true!

After thinking on this more I have decided that no, I could not release information even on junk sites or news sites. I would still be investigated if the claim was threatening to some group out there.

So as was previously suggested in this thread a fictional story may be the only possible method to release of information. This leads me to suppose thit would be the place to look for facts, in works of fiction which has been allowed to stand as such.

What I am unsure about with the story ref to the Grand Canyon , Egyptian tomb like Cave story, is I am not aware of anyone actually showing any real evidence to it ....but that is not to say that it is not true..

The Hoax article was just one that I found that opposed the theory of the story...

As much as I would like it to be true...I remain neutral in my thoughts on it...but could see its possible that such Egyptian like items could have been created and planted their..

As we know there have been rumors elsewhere of underground cave like systems suggested to be occupied by  Aliens..

Another frustration to some of the lessons we learn in Life and have to try to conclude based on others who have faced similar situations and we became aware of their outcomes..

I am still not sure if what you are indicating is something that you have experienced in reality or if its just something that you have wrote to make us think what we may do in similar situations.

Life seems so varied in the magnitude in the complexities that we can face...and we all seem so varied in our persons or what ever to the degree that we can face certain situations... as if we are bracketed and cannot get above a certain level to deal with certain things... that seems so frustrating...when we may feel limited in how we can think..act or do when it comes to dealing with things..

I see such variation as I have got older as I am sure most of us do..  but some seem too involved in being able to handle many more things in life with relative ease...

If one has certain information / knowledge that one may consider is something that could greatly benefit the world or even ones self.. but is concerned that they cannot discuss it with the right type of persons..and we then become paranoid as to what or who we can trust...then fear can control us or our decisions...

what I find hard as i am older...knowing that there can be so much of a negative side to things as well as positive sides... is that if one believes that their is only a small % of a chance of a negative outcome.. one can easily let that determine ones decisions..

I question is it only certain persons who somehow manage to become aware of certain discoveries and to be able to go about the outcome to become positive by being able to foresee and try to determine the likely outcome.... that maybe the majority of persons cannot do..

I can respect an approach that uses fiction to change the human race.  In fact, I have sometimes wondered if fiction, rather than facts, could be the only thing that creates general progress.  Lincoln once quipped that Uncle Tom's Cabin started the Civil War.  A surprising number of past engineering students once listed "Scotty" as motivation for their difficult studies. And then we have the Bible.....

It is known that actors who play villains on soap operas may be nearly attacked in common life by seemingly sane viewers, as if their characters were real.  NBC news once reported on a study that showed that, within a random group of people, the person who emerges as leader will be the most successful liar.  Think about this whenever you want to know which politician will win an election.

I am still not sure if what you are indicating is something that you have experienced in reality or if its just something that you have wrote to make us think what we may do in similar situations.

Actually this was a dream! A very realistic dream which was funny because in the dream I didn't have a flashlight in my backpack, but for the first time in many years I was able to backup the dream and include the backpack, all the time knowing I was doing so.

In my dream I had a sense inside the cave some thought but not voice told me not to remove anything, not even something small from the cave.

Anyway when I woke up i started think what I could do if it had been real. What a stifled world we live in and a lot of evidence points to it having been that way for a long long while. So I began to realize that if others out there have real information how would they get it out there.

In other words where would I need to look for hidden truth today?

Very interesting. Lies have always been a big thing with me, if there were no lies we would have a wonderful world. Clearly we are manipulated by fiction today in some bad ways, it worries me how much people like Hunger Games and many other movies have come up with forced killing even using children for entertainment.

I have done this with my first marriage I would not let myself see, hard to believe I did that for so many years as I look back but it protected me from what I could not handle at the time.

With Individuals being so varied..be it personality or IQ...upbringing etc... Is it also genetic ?

One may ask why are some persons as leaders , and others followers..

The thing is that you do get some who are very clever and can easily manipulate others....and maybe seen as leaders..

sometimes such persons are corrupt...and they know it but still are able to control situations...

Others maybe trying to be honest as they can be but may lack certain qualities to be seen as leaders...

so the clever corrupt ones can sometime manipulate the others and they are seen as the controllers..and it can be hard for the followers to challenge them..

Im sure many of us have experienced in group situations where some persons seem to do most of the Work.. and you see others taking it easy and even at times doing very little indeed..but somehow they have some sort of control over the others..sometimes maybe by using psychology  or using others to make some amends with to then use them to bond with and get them to support their ways...who in turn may then act as a small group who then seem to pressure the others into some sort of submission in which they may find it hard to challenge them...

Some people are so good with word power.. that they just find ways to put others down...and can take control that way.

But also you always will have a % of good leaders who are honest and are good at advising the group for the better or all...

Thanks for confirming...It would have been quite a situation if it had been something that you had really experienced...

(Unless it is ...and you using a description of a dream  as a cover to explain the story .. maybe we will never know for sure !

With ref to such a dream...my initial thoughts from your description / the story.. was much of it seemed to relate to TV or Movies that I am sure many of us have seen...

And it does make one think about just how TV and Movies maybe really effecting us....I suspect that it could be a real big part of some sort of mind control that must effect us all who have seen such stuff.. which has been discussed in quite some detail in past threads..

If one thinks that it is NOT related to such things... then one wonders how would we envision such things ..

would we dream of such a story say if we had never seen such related movies or read about similar stuff in books or the Internet..

or is it all just part of our lifes experiences whether it is a TV / Movie / book / Internet...or a story from someone..like our ancestors would have relied more on in their past before books or Electronic stuff came about !...

what would our dreams be like if we had never had such more recent experiences ?

Could we ever have hoped to dream of a Cave with a UFO inside it ? if we had never known about such a thing prior

Are Movies and TV good or bad for us ?

I suppose it depends !

In some ways I think TV / Movies are one of the best things that there is or ever invented..

Its great to be able to see so much and see some of the most amazing things we will ever experience...

in another way it can take away normal Life  , if we become addicted !

At times I can go into a complete mind take over and am very contented / comfortable watching so many experiences..and learning so many things...and I find it better to see / hear something than to have to read about it..Maybe it made my mind lazy in comparison..I can almost seem to become part of it..and go into another frame of mind...and completely forget about real lifes issues..it becomes almost like a drug..and im prepared to want to watch so much about others who are part of the programs and to learn about the actors experiences etc..as if I am in those scenes myself..

everything almost seems to be shown to the highest level..as its all so well planned out with what seems the very best and its developed by the best brains who create it all IMO...

I really start to appreciate as I get older just how amazing it all is and how its put together..

its like living numerous live experiences without having to actually experience so many thing directly myself !

we can all learn so much...and not have to go anywhere outside our house to observe it all.

I can watch some films numerous times and still not take it all in..
as at various stages in life or upon watching it we may learn or observe or note something new...even though we had already seen it 10 x before..there maybe new thoughts and questions we ask about parts of it....

its like a never ending endeavor...

but when we come back to normality it may have robbed us from learning about the more important issues in our lifes as to things like our academic learning's.. be it Science ,Maths , craft topics or what ever endeavor's our Careers or  other interests maybe. As well as we may forget to take care of ourselves such as our health and fitness , diet and well being../ family life and relationships.

A lot of good questions and interesting thoughts!
Personally I started reading when I was 4 and read every book that came near from then on. At age 11 I read a set of 28 huge books The Greatest Works of ...all the best know authors. The language was old and many like Poe were very difficult for me to understand but I read each and every one.

In school I would read my Math and Science books as well as the rest when they were issued at the beginning of the year, I read them like people read fiction and finished them through the first weeks of school years. I always enjoyed learning any subject.

So I have read so many thousands of books, if I had a great memory there would be little I could not converse on well by now. It is all in there and surely effects my dreams and imagination!

Clearly we need to limit the time we put into anything and be balanced. We like most people watch movies in the evenings as life is different today, what else would we do? If I were to read I would do so alone and evening is sharing time.

We have all of our favorite movies and we never tire of them, we have watched some uncountable times and each time I tell myself to keep alert for something I never noticed before. I always find something!! Love movies like Contact, Signs and alien movies that make you think but we always have variety too, that way you do learn about different things.

I have seen a Family destroyed because the husband was addicted to watching movies, he left his Family that way, it broke their Family. The wife hated watching movies and hated sitting around all of their free time.
I feel it is important to do things as a couple and to share! Lucky for me I married someone who loves all of the things I do and none that I hate! We need action time together biking, hiking, camping and such besides movies and our Everquest game time all sitting!

Some people are so good with word power.. that they just find ways to put others down...and can take control that way.

But also you always will have a % of good leaders who are honest and are good at advising the group for the better or all...

Unfortunately I have experienced many of the first and none of the last!
