China finally published the photos taken by Chang'e 3.

It's publicly accessible, but as their site is in Chinese, it's difficult to register, navigate and ask for the images, but Emily Lakdawalla from the Planetary Society did the work for us, downloading most of the photos and published them here.

Have fun. :)

the links are working but only via the thumb nails, txt links lead to a txt file
The IMG files? Those are not standard images, they use the format created by NASA and used by all space agencies from which I have downloaded photos. That format has a text header, describing the data that follows, then the real data, in this case the image itself.

To view those files you can use NASAview, IMG2PNG or, if you have a Linux or OS/X system available and are feeling lucky, the same suite of programs NASA uses to work with those images, ISIS. All are free. :)

Photoshop can also show the images, if you open them as "Photoshop RAW" and use the parameters listed on the page for each type of image (A, B or C).

PS: NASAView has some limitations, it can only save images as GIF or JPG, and, in the case of the Chang'e 3 colour images, it doesn't show colour. IMG2PNG also has some problems, in this case it cannot propoerly open the colour images.

QuoteIn a previously unseen act of information generosity, China has shared hundreds of photos taken by its Chang'e-3 lunar rover – leaving the world stunned by the detail of the high-quality color images.
The China National Space Administration published images, videos and scientific data on its website, making them available to anyone who registers.

China is the third nation after Russia and the US to land on the moon, and this was the first soft-landing on the Earth's only natural satellite in 37 years – the previous one being Russia's Luna 24 probe in 1976.

QuoteThe images were actually taken from 2013 to 2015 with cameras attached to the Chang'e-3 lander and the Yutu rover (meaning 'Jade Rabbit' in Chinese), which is no longer operational.

Apart from taking these exceptionally detailed high-quality color images of the moon, the mission was also equipped with a telescope and instruments to perform geologic analysis of the lunar surface.

The research performed suggests that the moon's surface may be less homogenous than originally thought. To find out more, the Chinese plan to send the Chang'e-5 spacecraft to collect more soil samples in 2017.

QuoteThen in 2018, the ambitious Chang'e-4 mission may become the first in the world to land on the far side of the moon.

Well I haven't found the link to the pictures yet :P

And I do wonder why Emily Lakdawalla is associated with the Chinese space administration considering it was her that outted the Chinese for their fake original photo :P
