QuoteAnd they have the right to say what they allow on their site.

Which is why I've left and they've lost the revenue I'd have generated. And I'm not alone.

I don't view it as a big loss. Their best days are behind them. I can still read the old stuff with FF and adblock. Unless the overlord decides to somehow disable that too.

Unobtrusive is what he should strive for. Instead he offers myriad excuses and threats.

I'm too old for that crap.

ETA: And what is with his logging out to pout that way more people are blocking ads than he realized? I think, again, he took a break to cry over lost revenue.

i agree irene.these websites want all up in our business and offer very little in return considering websites are almost free to start these days.

That is a load of CRAP  Sure a basic website these days can be had for about $200.00 or so annually and a good server allows unlimited space for webpages and unlimited data traffic. However that doe NOT apply for files and videos that are downloaded

When you get say an asshole hacker that finds a huge file on your website and sets a robot to download it repeatedly you do have to pay the bandwidth and it can (and has here at Pegasus) cause the server to shut down tyour page for excessive downloading. I had to remove ALL my downloadable files ofline or pay a premium fee for storing them so people can download them

I refuse to pay that extra seeing as no one cares about the files and videos anyway :P

It is true that ATS makes a LOT of money  much more than most would expect. In fact me pointing that out was part of why I got the boot. Back in 2007 Springer told me just how much three investors gave them and its in the 7 digit range.

But then they ARE a business after all and state that clearly.

But peopl that come to a forum to post for free tend to have this DELUSION that they have any RIGHTS :P Pure BS  As a private forum, any owner is free to set the terms. Freedom of speech does NOT apply... that is only a LIMITED right under government, but does not apply to any PRIVATE site

If you paid a membership fee you then have some expectation of having some rights as laid out in the terms you agreed to (but most likely never read :P ) on joining. Most forums have a standard "NON EXCLUSIVE" right to use your material for any purpose, including using it to promote or sell your content

Non exclusive is a license for them to do this, but it does not take awy YOUR original copyright. However if you choose to publish anything on a forum, you are effectively granting them license do do what the want with it

Quotethen add on that if you start your own,it gets very few hits.

Sure because it takes YEARS to build up ranking so people can find your site

Quotenow some would say the site is not popular but i suspect algerithems are stopping it from being popular.

ATS lost popularity because they dumped most of the good content provviders but you need to undersatnd something Since ATS is basically a click bait site now they care more about the kind of people that will click on ads as opposed to inteligent posters. They do not make money off smart people because those people don't fall for the click bait ads

I don't even look there anymore as the pages are so full of ads these days as a non member I can't even read an article/ The only time I do go is when I need something I wrote there years ago and didn't transfer yet

Quotethen most sites wont allow you to link to a blog or accuse you of spamming when your evidence may be at that blog.

There is NOTHING WORSE than people hot linking to your files or pictures. Bandwidth theft aside, what you are doing with hot links is taking a persons work without their context. So say I do an article on the secret space program. Then some blogger comes along and uses my work to create his own blog, but direct links the images on my server.  (then gets all the credit and says he is going to write a book)  So all those people finding the info on his site are now lost to my site yet he is using my work and images without credit.

Yes that has happened several times and once someone posted here saying "Hey you should check out what this guy has!" and I find it was a complet copy of my pages

Quoteso whos allowed to link to who?links are what bring visitors ie money.

That is false.  INCOMING links help your ratings  OUTGOING links help THEIR ratings

So If I do an article quoting a source say like the BBC...  everyone who reads that post gest credited as a 'hit' on the BBC link not mine

To generate traffic you need YOUR links on other peoples sites. That is why me posting links to Pegasus when I made posts there drove up our traffic so fast. Because from Google stats point of view everyone of those links are OUTGING from ATS and INCOMING to pegasus  and that is how they determin site rank.

Quotei think a news site should be set up by cool members so blogs can be turned into news then these tards would have to accept the link or look like obvious shills that they are.

What YOU THINK 'they" should do is irrelevant. You are free to create your own news site.  You also forget TIME  I spend a lot of hours a day between the forum and the website. Is my time worthless? Am I not living in a free country that allows me to expect some return for my labor?

WHY should I do it for FREE and pay expenses out of my pocket so that YOU can come here and tell me what I can and can't do...  or what I should do?

Over the years that I have been at ATS and then Pegasus, its been an endless stream of people whose only intent is to cause drama or tear apart something someone else is trying to do. Tell me why I (or anyone) should have to put up with that for free?

::)

Don't like the rules at ATS? go elswhere :P  But most forums have similar rules because the TS agreements are standard in the software.  I wonder how many people here have evem read ours?

:o   ::)

Hmmm maybe I should go subscription only :P  Then see who is really serious

Okay so  how many ads did you click on?  How much did you spend on those ads? are you aware how much money they get per click?

Just asking :D

QuoteAnd what is with his logging out to pout that way more people are blocking ads than he realized? I think, again, he took a break to cry over lost revenue.

Here is a good description of how click per view ads work. It is pased on a high volume of users. Pegasus has currently about 100,000 viewers per month on average on the website

"In a nutshell, you need 100,000 visitors a day to make $100,000 a year from Google AdSense alone (with a CTR of 1% and CPC of $0.25)."

This is using only google adsence  (which I now qualify to add)

http://www.minterest.org/how-much-traffic-do-you-need-to-make-money/

Click per ad is peanuts until you have millions of people visiting your site.  But a user friendly site usually doesn't bombard you with ads :P Only click bait sites do that

I have several text ads on Thelivingmoon.com  but you wouldn't even notice them as they are designed for robot searches and do not rely on people to click on them

I could use an agent who knows hoe to get more of those :D

Back when I was at ATS the Site Worth checker gave their wbsite value at 900,000

A search today at the same site shows

abovetopsecret.com
estimated website price is
$ 301,298
http://www.siteprice.org/website-worth/abovetopsecret.com

So yeah they have dropped quite a bit in 'value'

They are up from a page rank of 5 to a 6

while we have dropped from a 4 to a 3  (mostly because I have not been updating regularly)

But we dropped invalue from 26.000 to 8,000 despite that unique montly hits increases for 35K a month to 100K a month

To little income from the site  That is what determinse its 'value' in the long run

However ATS website loading speed
  Website Speed ? :   5.5 (slow)

Ours
Website Speed ? :   .9 (fast)

::)

Quoteno one cares about the files and videos anyway

I am interested. What do you have?

QuoteOkay so how many ads did you click on?

Quite a few actually.

Please remember what my specific complaints have been. Autoplay videos smack in the center of the page and ads that come up at the bottom of the page obstructing a fair amount of content.

I'm not opposed to advertising. I'm opposed to obnoxious advertising. I pay a lot of money for internet access on my phone. I use about 20 gigs per month and that is really limiting my use. I resent losing one byte to someone's stupid video ad.

Ads in columns on either side of the content, no problem. Advertise like mad. Just don't let advertising completely ruin the user experience.

Respectfully,

Irene   :)

proboards advertises their sites are free.so how can that be?

maybe i misread or misunderstood that you said above you got 100,000 viewers a day that that equals 100,000$ a year for you so my question would be why the need for donations?

if everybody is fighting over crumbs and nobody allows links then it would be almost impossible to grow?correct?

it almost seems like a no win.
wouldnt a news site generate more revenue than a blog?
if thats true then why not have pegasus news?
thats the question i just asked on proboards forum.
most of the members could create news post and other members would leave opinions under a comment section.
as most members here are really good writers ,lol, when we put our mind to it.thats seems like the logical path?

Proboards makes the money on YOUR "free" site  THEY run the ads and get the revenue. They also have very strict rules. Poem Minds forum was a proboard forum. A few people got into a nasty name calling slander war and proboards just shut it down and ERASED EVERYTHINg  include years of my work as a "special Guest"  Its all gone  just because a few children had to play nasty

Quotemaybe i misread or misunderstood that you said above you got 100,000 viewers a day that that equals 100,000$ a year for you so my question would be why the need for donations?

That is the Google Adsense figures They are estimates and are only IF you have advertisements plasteres all over your website and forum  They are potential numbers but not wriiten in stone. I do not use adsense   I could now because I now meet their qualifications but I hate the way they literally take over your website.

I have three companies want to charge me 150.00 a month to "fix" my site so it is ad friendly and mobile user friendly  in otherwords change it to a click bait site

Why donations?  Because I don't have a lot of income and every bit helps Some people like what they see...  People pay 10.00 for a movie or 15.00 for popcorn at the theater :P  But in truth save for a few, we can't even get a $1.00 beer tip (which paypal takes /37 cents of :P )

I suppose I should just switch to make it a commercial site  :P Make some decent money instead of wasting my time working for free :P

::)

Quoteif everybody is fighting over crumbs and nobody allows links then it would be almost impossible to grow?correct?

No links do not make you grow.  Word of mouth good reports do... great content do.  Links work opposite to what most people think. The more links you have to other sites, the more you send people AWAY  because they fallow that link and get distracted  and don't return

Quoteit almost seems like a no win.
wouldnt a news site generate more revenue than a blog?

Depends  what is a 'news site'? 90% of what is on ATS is BS 'news'  A major network sells professional ads but they also have to pay for their content

A blog can make millions too, depends on what your topic is and who your viewers are

Example  a blog on healing gemstones will attract the what we call "heally feely" crowd. Those people will buy an Aqua Aura Angel Quartz for $50.00. but what they get is a cheap 2.00 titanium coated normal quartz crystal

Example Steven Greer can get $10,000 a ticket to go sit in a filed and watch invisible 'ethereal' spaceships. Makes a killing.  So as I say depends on 1) your target audience and 2) you personal ethics

Quoteif thats true then why not have pegasus news?
thats the question i just asked on proboards forum.
most of the members could create news post and other members would leave opinions under a comment section.

And who would provide this news? As it is since Pegasus started only a small few people (you know who you are... thanks :D) have spent any real time providing content here

On the flip side we have had more members stir up drama that just pissed everyone off and they all left... burning down the barn on the way out.

Take Earthfiles by Linda Moulton Howe... she went subscription because she was tired of the BS from trolls etc...  but she has time to write articles daily that subscribers will pay for.

To do a true news site you need writers, fact checkers and someone to maintain a news letter to keep people informed and intersted  You either find volunteers or you hire someone... you cannot do it all yourself and still have a life

Quoteas most members here are really good writers ,lol, when we put our mind to it.thats seems like the logical path?

And how many members are "most members here are good writers"?  Most of us including ME  merely copy and paste news stories from the internet. There is very little original written pieces here.

I am good at finding and piecing it together with a little fill in the blanks stuff but esentially most of what I have is merely collected from other sources. We have no field reporters. Most of the insiders we had have passed away or retired...

While the website pulls in lots of people, the forum has around 30ish active members

Oh well  I will be focusing more on Land of Legends this year Its a lot more fun and has a lot more potential for a real income :P  I almost have all the pages repaired except for the main menu links

(Hum, I started writing this before Zorgon made what is now the just preceding comment) :)

Why does anyone here really care a flip about what ATS does or doesn't do?? I guess I am still a member over there, but I left ATS several years ago simply because of how badly members who posted were treated by rude and condescending skeptics with obvious underlying motives. ATS was no fun for me then, and with some of the comments in this thread, it seems than it remains to be a no-fun place. While I was at ATS, I did meet in commenting one person who I truly had reason to respect, and that was Zorgon! He really was a "jewel" at that place!!

What ATS does do still today, is continue to show us how fortunate we are to have what we have here at the Pegasus/Livingmoon website. Z (Zorgon) has made this a place where we are pretty free to post and comment, as long as we conduct ourselves in a reasonably respectful manner. He works hard to keep it a place for both our learning about "stuff", and for our having "fun" with the stuff. And, .............. there sure is a lot of "stuff", that comes to light here, real or not!! :)

This thread does simply highlight the fact that we need to thank Z for his continued work toward making this site one of the very best - and the more members and the more hits, the better it gets for all of us!!!

Thanks Z!
