Just saw a report on the Weather Channel of a magnitude 7.4 quake located 91 miles north of Christchurch and that was about the sum of the details...

The kiwis have caught it again

Now they are saying 7.8 located 33 miles north of Amberly NZ at 11:02 GMT...

Ive been discussing quakes w armap, this happened on opposite side of techtonic plate from a giant water wave slap on the cali coast.im wondering it they are related.it could be the ocean floor tectonic plates are more sensitive to stresses than surface tectonic plates.the resulting sunami may trigger more quakes as they may be strait line parallel to shore waves

What resulting tsunami?

Quote: New Zealand's Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management reported that a tsunami wave struck at about 1:50 a.m. and warned residents living in low-lying areas anywhere along the country's east coast to move to higher ground.

The ministry had earlier sent out a message on Twitter saying there was no tsunami threat to the country. But then it sent out another message — "situation has changed - tsunami is possible" — before reporting that a tsunami had, in fact, hit.

Z is right, the SuperMoon means that the tensions caused by the graviational pull of Moon and Sun are higher than usual right now.  A good undergraduate geology project would be to correlate quakes with lunar to Sun position.

A 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck near Hanmer Springs at 12.02am.

There are reports of two fatalities.

Scores of severe aftershocks have hit.

A dam on the Clarence River, north of Kaikoura, has breached, releasing a "large wall of water", and nearby residents are being told to move to higher ground immediately.

The tsunami threat warning from Wellington to Banks Peninsula has been cancelled, but people are advised to stay vigilant near coastal waters.

Authorities have advised Wellington residents to stay away from the central city today, with concerns forecasting high winds could cause further damage.

Thanks for the reply, Seeker. My friend, Jessie (BPEarthwatch) thinks the same thing.

Stay un-tuna-ed.   ;)

More likely......Supermoon...
I doubt it, as this earthquake didn't happen on the supermoon (it was day too soon), and that 24 (more or less) difference means that at all other times the Moon was at its perigee but one day before or after the full moon we should also have these big earthquakes.
