QuoteHeat wave: 1,000+ records fall in US in a week
Jun 27, 7:40 PM (ET)

From the wildfire-consumed Rocky Mountains to the bacon-fried sidewalks of Oklahoma, the temperatures are creating consequences ranging from catastrophic to comical.

In the past week, 1,011 records have been broken around the country, including 251 new daily high temperature records on Tuesday.

103 deg is forecast for tomorrow, 101 for Saturday and Sunday, and 100 for Monday here where I am.  That is assuming the forcasted temperatures don't trend upward.

If you have the means to do so,  please take water and ice to the homeless in your area.  That simple act of human kindness can (and will) make the difference between life and death for someone.

Lady Jae -

Thank you.

It lifted my spirits to see this thread.  ;D

Yours and several other members here do that quite often for me with your threads.

Pegasus seems to attract such people.

Great thread, Jae! The homeless are people who are just like us who had a bad turn or event in life that was impossible to overcome.

They all deserve compassion regardless of what they have done or why.

I also find that those dollar cheeseburgers from McD's are great too, as I used to make the stop a couple times a week on the way to work and deliver dozens of them to the area where many homeless live in St Pete, Fl ...William's Park.

Those guys were so happy to see the food and drink, it was worth the small expense!

It only takes a few bucks and a few minutes of your day to do something proactive, and with the heat especially, it will lift spirits and help stave off the thirst.

Gold for that, Jae...for sure!
Hugs!

Here in Las Vegas we are accustomed to 100 degree plus weather. July is almost here and we can reach 120.

But THIS year we hit 100 degrees in APRIL  setting a new record. Its also been 100 plus since the end of May

My plants are not happy, many fruit trees and veggies have died

But beware of Ice water... it can knock you out. Cool water yes, or even hot tea to rehydrate but if your over heated don't guzzle that ice water

Take it from a former sailor now Desert Rat

A mix of 1 part fruit juice and 3 parts cool not cold water is the best solution

That is wonderful, Le! It makes my heart swell to hear of "random acts of kindess"...especially toward those who are in such dire straits.

Here we have entire families displaced and living in these homeless "camps".  It hurts me so badly.  We can't do much but any clothing, shoes, coats, and toys (all gently used, of course) that we no longer use are distributed among them.

This past Christmas, my 7yr old grandson used the money in his piggy bank to buy a few new toys to take to some children in the camp closest to us.  His generosity spurred several of his friends to do the same thing.  You should have seen those children, Littleenki!  You would have thought they were given the world.

My entire garden has died, Zorgon.  I couldn't keep up with the sun.

No, we don't take ice water.  Large coolers filled with ice, some cups, several flats of bottled water, and a few gallon jugs of water is what we give.  The kids made some hand fans and bandanas that we gave also.

Former sailor?  My husband was on the Forrestal on her shakedown(?) cruise after being repaired.

A fantastic story with the kids, Jae! I bet they light they showed in their eyes, was as bright as the light in your grandkids hearts!

I do a market in that very park every Saturday nowadays, and still see some folks who were there twenty years ago.
Most have moved up into apartments, and even a few who have started businesses! Of course, there are new faces, and I speak to them with respect and admiration for thier plights, so many dont and its cruel to see someone ridiculing them.

How heart warming it is to see them doing better, and a few even remembered me!:D

Soon we should have a new world with a new direction, and I look forward to a day when noone has to be without a place to call home...it really is unacceptable at any level!

Cheers!

I am touched this simple thread spoke to you  :)

Please, please encourage all you know to offer a helping hand to those less fortunate...especially over the next few days.  Its a wonderful thing to touch a life.

As long as you don't live in Orlando  :o

Arrested for Feeding the Homeless in Violation of New Orlando Law

QuoteMembers of the organization Food Not Bombs were in good spirits as they passed out corn on the cob, rice, beans and other vegetarian dishes to the homeless and hungry in an Orlando park. This cheer was interrupted when police officers on bicycles arrived and arrested five of the volunteers.

This is not the first time this scene has played out for members of Food Not Bombs.

Since June 1, a dozen members of the group have been arrested for violating a new Orlando city ordinance that prohibits sharing food with large groups in downtown parks more than twice a year.

The mayor of Orlando even branded them "food terrorists."

LOL..they're already planning to do the same this year.  Mercy and compassion can never be learned too early!!

One of the good things that came from the flood 2yrs ago was to focus the spotlight on the plight of our homeless.  The original "tent city" was destroyed and many of the homeless had to be rescued from the rising water.  The city officials decided, if they wanted to keep their positions another term, it was time to begin doing something about it.

I, too, have gritted my teeth in listening to the ridicule and insults heaped upon these people.  "There, but for the grace of God, go I."  Most of the population in this country is only 1 paycheck away from being homeless.

Doesn't it make your heart warm when you see someone pull themselves up?!  Of course they remembered you! You were one of the few who treated them as a fellow human being.  Good on you  :)

I know! Wasn't that absolutely disgraceful?!  How in the name of all that is good can it be against the law to show compassion for a fellow human  >:(

Mayor of Salt Lake City showed compassion

Rounded up all the homeless and bought them a one way bus ticket to Las Vegas

His logic was that its warmer here with no winters

Disgusting show of arrogance!  I hope that was the death knell of his mayorship.

How is it that few realize most of us are just a step away from the same plight?

Sounds like the roundup planned for the RNC here in Tampa.

They bring them to the other side of the bay, then arrest them for walking back across the bridge!

Asinine!

I could take the money the military has blown in the last ten years, and house every homeless person for life, but instead we blow people and their homes up, and create more homeless, in the other countries! Argh!

Someone would like to see us all homeless, and it seems our PTb are making every effort to ensure there are many!

Man...Im going tomorrow to drop off some sliders! Gotta start the healing somewhere!

here it is...

Quote(Oct. 25, 2001)------Getting into events at the 2002 Winter Olympics is still one of the toughest tickets in town.

But the Mayor of Las Vegas says he has it on good authority that Utah's homeless people will get a one way ticket out of town during the Olympics.

Mayor Oscar Goodman says, "Based on the information I have, I think there's a great deal of truth to it."

On at least three occasions in recent weeks and again yesterday, Mayor Oscar Goodman told Las Vegas reporters that reliable police sources tell him Utah's homeless are already being sent to Las Vegas.

QuoteOscar Goodman/Mayor, Las Vegas: "I'M BRIEFED ALL THE TIME BY CITY MANAGERS OFFICE, METRO, FBI ON OCCASION, AS TO WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE COMMUNITY. AND I WAS ADVISED ABOUT TWO DAYS AGO THAT OVER A THOUSAND PEOPLE HAVE BEEN SENT DOWN HERE, OR FARES WERE PURCHASED ON THEIR BEHALF FROM SALT LAKE CITY TO COME TO LAS VEGAS TO CLEAR THEM OUT FOR THE OLYMPICS."
