If anyone has friends who are newcomers to UFO research then science journalist J. Antonio Huneeus is quite a well established chap and gives some good introductory advice in the videos below about various official and unofficial reports and investigations into the subject - there's also Orkojoker's series of UFO Education videos HERE which are a great watch and contain significant info about topics like government documentation, USAF regulations and completely ridiculous official UFO explanations.

BlueBook:

Blue Book was the result of two previous Air Force study projects, Sign and Grudge, in the late forties and lasted until early 1970. It's purpose was to determine if UFOs were a threat to national security, and to scientifically analyze UFO-related data. The project went through many changes, but there can be little doubt that it played a pivotal role in the official history of UFOs in the USA.

The name COMETA in English stands for "Committee for in-depth studies". This report was carried out over a several year period at the Institute of Advanced Studies for National Defense, or IHEDN, a high-level French military think-tank.

Italian documents?

These files were originally delivered in the mid-nineties to famed Italian ufologist and author Roberto Pinotti, and sent on stationary bearing the seal of the Kingdom's Senate and Agenza Stefani, the regime news agency in charge of disseminating Fascist propaganda. Forensic analysis was done on the documents and they were found to be originals and not photocopies. Andrea Bedetti, a historian and expert on Italy's Fascist era, found that the stationary, aeronautical terminology and vocabulary were all consistent with real documents from the period. These documents contained written testimony describing in detail several sightings along with hand-drawn pictures. It also discloses that Mussolini and Ciano, Italy's number one and number two leaders were informed right away about the phenomenon. These documents also talk of the alleged creation of the top secret "Cabinet RS/33", led by Marconi, and included some of Italy's most prominent astronomers, scientists and aeronautical engineers. As things went sour for Italy during the war, all the files from Cabinet RS/33 were supposedly shipped to Nazi Germany, where they might have influenced the Italian aeronautical engineer Belluzzo.

This next part of our "Your Need to Know" series, Antonio Huneeus examines RAND Corporation's UFO document, titled UFO's: What to do? The RAND Corp was originally an outgrowth project of World War II, called Project RAND, in May of 1948 it separated from the Douglas Aircraft Company and became it's own independent, nonprofit organization.

George Kocher of the RAND Corporation, published this document in November of 1968, a few months after the University of Colorado completed it's Condon Report. The RAND Corp document is broken into five different essays, Historical Aspects, Astronomical Aspects, The Character of Reports, Phenomenological Aspects, and How to Proceed and Why. These essays explore the types of reports and sightings, how they are categorized, and a list of hypotheses that exist surrounding the phenomenon. The document also provides an example of a detailed UFO report form developed by the University of Colorado's study group.

Latest 'Need to know' video dealing with FBI UFO Documents and the Hottel Memo:

In this next part of our Your Need to Know series, Antonio Huneeus examines the UFO files from the FBI's The Vault. The Vault was created in 2011 as a storehouse for commonly requested FBI documents already released under the Freedom of Information Act. Go to Vault.FBI.gov, and from there you can easily search a multitude of topics ranging from counterterrorism to unexplained phenomenon.

The FBI recently revealed on its website that the most searched document is a simple one page memo called the "Guy Hottel Memo". Its contents were written on March 22, 1950 by Guy Hottel, a special agent in charge of the Washington Field Office, and allude to the crash and recovery of the Roswell UFO. The memo ends abruptly with a sentence stating that no further evaluations were attempted. Major news organizations reported on this document being newly released, but it was actually released under the Freedom of Information Act, and available since the 1970s. Bruce Maccabee was the first to obtain this document, and he believes it to be part of an elaborate hoax.

I will admit that I have become extremely skeptical where the UFO scene is concerned.  I'm not skeptical towards the possibility of alien life; my skepticism is directed towards the subculture.

It is the same old material, over and over again; at this point it is impossible for me to view it as anything more than entertainment.  If I visit exopolitics.org now, I'm likely to want to do so with a large pizza box and a bottle of Coke next to me at the same time.  It's cheaper than renting a DVD, and often more fun.

I'll be the first to admit I don't know what is behind UFO origin but I wouldn't dismiss the entire subject just because of one group of ego driven, attention seeking fanatics (to be fair I'd say the world of UFO skepticism has it's fair share of those as well).

I think partly because I'm also starting to question the overall relevance of extraterrestrials to my daily existence.  I am someone who has been notoriously neglectful of my mundane life.  I'm getting to the point of thinking that we simply need to leave the aliens alone, for the most part, and instead focus on our own development.

If ET is out there, then my guess is he'll show up on his own time when he is good and ready.  That might be many years from now, however, and I need to get my own act together in the meantime.

Well I don't think we know for sure that the ET hypothesis is necessarily the right one mate - there's also plenty of other opinions out there about UFO origin involving extra dimensional folks, crypto-terrestrials, time travellers, Nazis, demons etc.. 

I guess the relevance of the UFO subject is subjective but the curiosity generated by cases like the Colares, Tehran, Coyne, Edwards, Red Bluff and Portage County incidents I've found to be pretty universal - I mean how can a person not be curious about what these objects actually are?   

If ET is out there, then my guess is he'll show up on his own time when he is good and ready.  That might be many years from now, however, and I need to get my own act together in the meantime.

Well appreciate the honesty and will certainly miss your input - of course you are right to prioritize about personal matters and I'm sure the UFO subject will be just as controversial and unexplained if you ever decide to return to it.

Also, when it comes to serious UFO research (and not the pantomime that is 'exopolitics') then this pdf file is a good read for a rainy day.

Installment dealing with Canadian UFO studies like Project Magnet and Second Story:

The next episode in our series is titled Canada's Official UFO Studies. We will explore two of Canada's UFO reporting agencies: Project Magnet and Second Story, both established in the early 1950?s. Also we will examine some details of the infamous Shag Harbor UFO incident. This case is one of the very few where a government agency formally acknowledges an unidentified flying object. It was determined that no known aircraft was involved in the incident, so the source remains unknown to this day.

Australia's UFO Files – Your Need to Know

The next episode in our series is Australia's UFO Files. The National Archives of Australia holds a number of records relating to UFOs, flying saucers and other unidentified aerial phenomena. The documents became available in August 2012 under Australia's 30-year rule. This rule orders the release of government documents 30 years after they were created. Most of these records date from the 1950's to the 70's, when public interest in UFOs was high and many sightings were reported to Commonwealth authorities.

Well I don't think we know for sure that the ET hypothesis is necessarily the right one mate - there's also plenty of other opinions out there about UFO origin involving extra dimensional folks, crypto-terrestrials, time travellers, Nazis, demons etc..

This is something I am likely to focus on in the near future.  I am increasingly leaning away from the extraterrestrial hypothesis.  I accept that ETs are out there.  I also think - given the astronomical number of possible civilisations out there - they probably have, do and will have visited Earth and also likely monitor Earth's development in the same way humans do animals and study anthropology.  I am beginning to lean away from the ETH in important ways....

In particular, any types of sighting that are more common are in my opinion not likely to be from other star systems or planets.  If there really are saucers, USOs and similar spotted regularly by pilots then there is little reason to assume they are extraterrestrial.  If they are common then they are likely crypto-terrestrial (interdimensional is closely related IMO) with underground, underwater or both the origin.

By hunch is based on a few known facts.

1.  They operate effectively on Earth indicating familiarity with the environs.

2.  They are practically always spotted within the atmosphere and not in space. (excluding plasma critters which I consider possibly identified already)

3.  Humanoid occupants are frequently reported without breathing apparatus which indicates they are adapted to a terrestrial environment.

4.  Mythology suggests we are not alone and have not been alone as the only intelligent biped on Earth.

5.  The cover up at every turn seems to focus on keeping the debate between ET Hypothesis and misidentification and hallucination sometimes requiring hilariously cooked up nonsense to keep UFOlogists and interested parties there.  It makes us look like a bunch of idiots to not move beyond it.


I'd like to do a mega thread on this at some point if time allows but for now will just do an exploratory thread (link below).  The input of members on these ideas would be gratefully accepted.

Great thread mate dealing with probably one of the most important questions of the lot - where the dickens are the objects involved in cases like the Tehran, Coyne, Colares, Red Bluff, Bariloche, Portage County, Edwards AFB, Minot AFB, etc. incidents actually from?

Chile's UFO Files – Your Need to Know

The next episode in our series covers Chile's government organization CEFAA — [Comite De Estudios De Fenomenos Aeros Anomalos] translated into English, "The Committee for the Study of Anomalous Aerial Phenomena."

Chile is one of the few countries around the world that has a government-backed UFO research organization. In Spanish UFOs are referred to as OVNIs. [Objecto Volador No Identificado] In 1997 the country publicly recognized it was experiencing UFO sightings and that the phenomenon was real. Some incidents could not be explained by natural phenomena and could not be identified as any type of man-made object.
