(This might be appropriate for being in the Mars Anomalies forum board?)

"Worm" is not a conclusion I would make for this, but, as often is the case with NASA photos, this presents little more than "eye-candy". :) This certainly appears to be some sort of tubular feature, with what appear to be concentric rings around/along the length of it that we can see - looks somewhat like "threads" we see on a screw.

For sure, there is not much reason to doubt this piece to be an anomaly of some sort, as it certainly is drastically different from its surroundings. But, from the pic we have of it, we cannot know whether it is actually a circular threaded length we see, or, are we seeing the forward edge of a shaped piece that extends rearward back into the "sand"?? Because it doesn't extend through the surface in the next nearer depressions at each end, we can know it does not extend very far on each end, if it has "ends".

Here are 2 magnified screenshots of the piece, from the Rover Curiosity photo, for us to also look at in this thread:

Unless it's just another JPEG error, it does look like a wonderment, lying across the dune's direction.  And it seems to have equal/regular segments.

Sort of a dune zipper.

It does look like a screw, and, whatever it may be, it's been there since sol 1233 (I think).

or maybe the the robot arm has been trying to cause another sandslide :D

Anyone know if that is a microscopic picture? What size it is?

I think the sand bank is the track left by the rover wheel, so the item is very
small..maybe less than 1/2 inch long, and in my opinion may be a spring that
was at one time part of the rover..Seems several items have fallen off the rover
over the time it has been 'on mars'.
Just my opinion, that means less than nothing

Well now, the plot thickens! :)

As ArMaP pointed out, "it's been there since sol 1233 (I think)". Based upon his comment, I have looked more at earlier photo shots, and it is............until Sol day 1229, and it is not there!! The pic is as clear as the others, and the threaded looking feature is not in the pic.

I will post the shots of both Sol 1237 (again) and Sol 1229, so all can see the difference. So, now the question becomes not only "what is it?", but also, "why isn't it in a the Sol day 1229 photo?" Did the Rover drop it there? Or, is it in fact "screwing itself" through the sand? The pics do show the sand to be undisturbed with no anomaly in the earlier pic.

Knowing that Curiosity's wheels are 40cm wide, the "worm" is 4.5 cm long.

PS: on my previous post I should have said "it has been there since sol 1234". Also, it wasn't there on sol 1221, as we can see.

Thanks, I missed sol 1229. :)
